I realize there may be a bit of liability you may have wanted to avoid by mentioning this but you can generally make a not waterproof servo at least splash resistant pretty easily. Basically it’s plasti-dipping or flex sealing the case around the parts where the case separates and putting a nice glob of grease around the servo gear at the horn. Of course this means either matching or cleaning & replacing the grease. I gotta say I love the ecopower 120t being fully waterproof out of the gate though. Saves the headache

For nitro buggy I run Savox 2290 with almost 700ozin for steering and protek 155s .06 seconds transit for throttle. Most people run higher torque for better steering consistency. You don't need high speed steering, because you're never going to be slamming full left, right, left, right, left... within a second on track. Higher speed on throttle is more desirable because it allows better engine response. You don't need high torque on your throttle, because you are going to tone down your brake end point way down to avoid locking up the wheels. Anything after that is a waste. Servos have came a long way. Even the lightening fast ones have very high torque ratings compared to 10 years ago and vice versa with the monster torque servo transit times on the market.

Hey Brett,I'm building a Tamiya Super Clod Buster,and i am looking for a high torque servo.What type of servo would reccomend?I going to use it for both motors.Also,I want to improve the steering.I have a Futaba s3003 servo,but the holes on the servo horn is too small to fits the 6mm ball connector.I am looking for a double sided servo jorn.Any suggestions would be appreciated.Would you reccomend a pistal grip transmitter ot a stick radio for independent front and rear steering should I want to do that later.Thank you.
@AMain_Hobbies
@AMain_Hobbies 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Dale. There are tons of servos out there. With how big the tires are on the Super Clod Buster, somewhere around 300oz/in of torque would be ideal. The EcoPower WP120T is a great option and pushes 400oz/in on high voltage, and it's waterproof: www.amainhobbies.com/ecopower-wp120t-coreless-waterproof-high-torque-metal-gear-digital-servo-ecp-120t/p734714 Savox has some great servo options as well, plus Futaba, but they can be pricey. For a servo horn, all the brands mentioned above use a 25T horn spline, so for that, this might work: www.amainhobbies.com/savox-sh50-servo-horn-set-2-sav-sh-50/p183363 Here's an aluminum one: www.amainhobbies.com/hudy-aluminum-clamping-2-hole-servo-horn-25t-futaba-savox-protek-hud293449/p779335 Here are all the multi-arm horns we carry if you want to browse around: www.amainhobbies.com/multi-arm-servo-horns-parts-cars-trucks/c2518 With plastic arms, you can ream out the holes to fit your project, and aluminum can be drilled out. If the horn is too long, plastic can be easily trimmed with snippers, and aluminum can be sanded down with a dremel, if you want to go full custom on the horn to suit your exact needs. Hope this helps! -Brett

Yeah, any standard sized servo will fit in it's place and you probably just need a basic servo; something like this: www.amainhobbies.com/ecopower-wp110t-cored-waterproof-high-torque-metal-gear-digital-servo-ecp-110t/p-qtacq2uq7mzxactz The only thing to consider is some servo brands use a different tooth count on the spline (where the horn is attached) so if you switch brands you may need a new horn, but they're inexpensive. Here are all our standard sized servos, organized by analog, brushless, digital and high voltage, on the left side column. -Brett

Excellent video on the variety of servos out there. However one area that perhaps you could cover that was not mentioned. That is servos in use on model locomotives running on railroads such as model Garden railroads particularly used in live steam locos. There is a need when operated by an R/C system to operate the throttle, the forward-reverse gear, the whistle or horn, uncouplers etc. The thing about live steam is IT"S HOT, and if the servo is near the boiler then the heat can affect the servo. I had to have two servos wrapped in heat resistant material to help this. What is your comment please ?
@AMain_Hobbies
@AMain_Hobbies 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. For high heat applications with nitro vehicles, we typically recommend an aluminum case servo to help dissipate the heat. If they have aluminum case servos for your size, those would perform best. Here is one of ours with a conformal coated circuit board: www.amainhobbies.com/protek-rc-155s-digital-high-speed-metal-gear-servo-high-voltage-metal-case-ptk-155s/p742422 -Brett

Hi Chief, thank you for taking the time to make this video, I’m learning every day. My question is a little outside your video subject but I’m an electronics idiot but I’m not a dumb guy, so I’m hoping to tap your expert opinion for some advice. I’m trying to pull the rope on a lifejacket CO2 manual inflator (No, using the auto inflator is not an option) using either a servo or a solenoid with a button as the trigger on off. So, I’ve guessed the torque pull required on the rope is probably 3 to 5kg and this is a one-time use one time pull device I’m trying to build. I don’t even know if that is even possible to press a button once and get enough torque from a servo or solenoid to pull a rope? Would the servo keep spinning or would it stop after the button is released? Any advice or suggestions would be most greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

You can definitely use a servo for non-rc tasks. Most servos have a limited rotation, around 180°. To steer r/c cars, the servo is set to it's center to provide ~90° to the left and to the right. Some servos are continuous rotation, like the ones we use to control a 4x4 winch, but they are less common. To control the servo, you'll need a power source and a controller unit (im sure rigging it to a button is possible, but you'll need to be crafty) Our house brand, ProTek R/C, released a new servo that outputs 1000oz-in of torque at 8.40V. It's measured using a 1" long servo horn (all r/c torque specs are). Finding enough torque shouldn't be a problem and I'm sure you can accomplish your goals with these r/c items, it's just a matter of making it. -Brett

So , if i'am working on 2s lipo , by default my servo will go on 7,4V or more if ESC will handle ?
@AMain_Hobbies
@AMain_Hobbies 3 жыл бұрын
No. Regardless of the battery you use, your ESC has a built-in BEC which regulates the power delivered to the receiver, and then the servo. If you set your BEC to 6.0V, your receiver and servo will receive 6V. If you set the BEC to 7.4V, then your receiver and servo will get 7.4V. -Brett

No sir. The servo type is independent of the motor and ESC, and there is no compatibility issues with running a brushed or brushless servo, with any motor & ESC type. Good question. -Brett

wow such a lot of really helpful information and advice thank you Brett. Just one suggestion....it would really help listeners if you ditch the background 'elevator' music. Its very intrusive especially if you use headphones and makes it difficult to follow your voice . What type of digital rotation servo would you recommend for a very slow and very smooth rotational movement say for revolving an animatronic owl head ? I need something that ideally has a slow start and ultra smooth movement and will hold position without jerking or buzz and hum that some servos give.

Shoot, I really can't say not having experience with any of the them. We actually only offer two on our website: www.amainhobbies.com/continuous-rotation-servos-electronics-cars-trucks/c7418f With the HSR-2645CR being the only that is proportional, so that would be the smoothest of the two. The wobble is due to the TSM being adjusted too high. It is best to turn down TSM, or turn off, when doing high speed runs. This should help you out! -Brett

Yes and No. It depends on the application. For 1/10 and 1/8 bashers, we use a servo saver always. These cars are going too fast and tumbling too hard to survive long term without one. On the other hand, for competitive 1/10 racing, they're almost never used. 1/8 racers still use them though, because most 1/8 cars are still designed with the servo saver in the steering assembly (they can be adjusted/locked down though). Hope that helps. -Brett
