I just purchased a 1400MM Dynam Spitfire electric powered plane, and I'm hoping to get it in the air before the weather gets too bad here. Great job of flying, and sorry about the crash. Hope she is back up and flying soon.

Incredible to see flying over the freeway. Amazed that is permitted, all it takes these days is for ONE incident to shut an airfield down. I have this exact plane, got rid of the Robart electric retracts as one actuator failed and caused all controls to glitch, glad it happened on the ground! Hope you got this beautiful plane repaired okay!

He wasn't even that close to the freeway. From the angle, it looks like he was over the freeway, but he wasn't.

What a shame, the ruin of a nice model. But Rule number one for landing any aircraft, model or full size, long stabilised approach. Keep wings level and do not use the elevator to adjust height. That comes from the engine!! On the Lockheed L1011 Tristar (full size) our approaches were always from about 8 miles,. 12 for training sessions. I hope you have it repaired and flying again.
@andrewpearce25626 жыл бұрын
I agree, the approach was much too tight without really having a good handle on the plane. What ended up doing him in, though, was that he was much too fast on touchdown. He basically flew it into the ground, and the hard impact on the left gear bounced the plane up again, simultaneously flipping it over. Not the best plane to learn how to land with...
@seamaster279 жыл бұрын
That was a great shame - I hope you were able to repaire the damage. The same thing happened to my 1/5 scale model Spit when it tip stalled on take off. I've sinse learnt that, unlike a trainer or a Piper Cub, you've got to keep these models moving and fly them all the way down to the ground or else this is the sort of thing that happens.

I agree, its very difficult to try and three point a spitfire. This one also seemed to fly kind of tail heavy which probably wont help on landing.

Another case of the airplane exceeding the pilot's competency. As an accident investigator, I see this is sadly most common. Warbirds are notoriously difficult to land due mostly to the wing being for high speed flight, not slow, stable landings and not made any easier by having no reference to airspeed. After the bounce and roll, no control input from the pilot is evidence of lack of experience and or training. A freeze on the controls. The landing is the only compulsory part of the entire flight. That is why it is taught first with so many hours spent flying circuits. Condolences to the pilot on the realisation of still being near the bottom of a very steep learning curve.
@kengutwein93706 жыл бұрын
How unfortunate. Pilot training is a must for anyone flying giant scale. This pilot obviously had little. From a wobbly take off to constant aileron overcorrection on banking he demonstrated little skill. The nose down landing was just the final nail in the coffin. What is really frightening is the vehicle traffic in the adjacent road. What if he had plowed into one of those cars?
@mayadogful7 жыл бұрын
Came in too hot. Do longer downwind circuits turn base, then final ajust your approach speed... of course easier sais than done...
@andrewnielsen31786 жыл бұрын
Yep turned in too soon and was too high so didn't have time to set up landing properly. he applied down as he finished turn in so was way too fast. Hisidle was a bit fast so didn't help. Camera guy was great.

It seems to be a fault with a lot of scale fliers in that they do not learn on trainer aircraft first with a knowledgable instructor. The secret of a good landing is a long stable approach and not adjusting the speed and height with the elevator - use engine only. Do not use the elevator until the round out. A sad ending to a nice model. Condolences to the flier.

@russg18017 жыл бұрын
Landing ANY aircraft is a challenge and it's especially tough when you're doing it without the line-of-sight that a live pilot would have. A light model is going to be prone to a hard bounce and this one landed jelly side down. Tough break; hope she's repairable 'cuz I can't imagine the amount of detail work required to construct that ship.

Crosswind aside your approach was too steep you pulled up abruptly many of your stick movements were pretty jerky. Coupled with crosswind it snapped. A longer shallow approach crabbing slightly would have been advisable. . I'd question if big warbirds are your bag, you look like a good aerobatic flyer

Final was too high and fast. Need to give yourself room and not rush the decent and flare right after turning final. This field is on realflight rc sim so it should be easy to practice approaches a bit. Same rule holds true for full scale flying actually - don't rush the approach and landing
@summoningdark2167 жыл бұрын
Man what a shame. Lovely approach, then.............. Took me a long time (and a few ooops moments like this) until I learned to control height with the throttle, and speed with the elevator.

Oh! What a shame! Was the problem perhaps a balance point too far fwd? And a short approach where the model was not properly stabilised. A good landing never comes from an unstable approach. I hope that all is mendable and the she flies again.
@EpicNightCrawler7 жыл бұрын
no I don't think so, looks pretty much like pilot error there... approach was all wrong, controlling decent there using pitch and not throttle, got to fly it onto the ground. thanks for the video, its good you allowed us to see what occurred...you could have just as easily edited it. we have all done these at some point in our flying... more landing practice is required is all , this plane is just a bit above the pilots experience

To MrHelidude. Sorry, but I do not understand your comment. I did not mean to criticise unfairly or to be unkind in any way as I know, only too well, what it feels like to lose a nice model. I meant to add a little advice so that next time out the flyer would not make the same mistake. On the trimming flights, trim the elevator to give a nice comfortable glide path angle and, when this is achieved, alter the engine down thrust as necessary to give a level flight path with the throttle setting at the desired spot.. If you can manage this the approach will be made at the correct speed without the need to touch the elevator which, if you do, will change the speed/lift/height resulting in a bad landing. Good luck with all your landings…………..

What happens if an RC plane collides/crashes into private property - be it a vehicle, home or person? These are large heavy objects that are obviously subject to mechanical, electrical/operator malfunctions. I'd be some pissed to have a model plane crash into my car while minding my own business driving down a highway!
