Perfect first vehicle! I bought an 89 burb for my first truck, gas is expensive but putting in a fuel pump was $40, dropping the tank was easy sans rust. Putting in a starter was $40, two bolts and two wires. Brakes were $150, only needed a spindle nut socket. Everything’s cheap to replace and easy to replace. If you want to have your S/O, friend, or kid learn to wrench, a suburban is a great place to start!

Great video! I scoured the country looking for a very clean 4WD GMT400 4-dr Tahoe. Found a 1999 model in showroom condition in Boise, brought it home to California. I was trying to decide between the 4-dr Tahoe and a Suburban. (I already have a 2-dr GMT400 Tahoe which I love, but I like to sleep in the back and it’s a little tight back there.) Decided on the 4-dr Tahoe because it’s a foot longer than the 2-dr with only a 6-inch longer wheelbase, but it’s 20 inches shorter than a GMT400 Suburban. I just got a 5-inch RCD suspension with Bilstein 5100 shocks installed - it sits great and the ride is FANTASTIC! Toyo Open Country AT/III and new KMD 18” wheels on order. I also just finished building a very nice removable bed for the back.

I recently found a 1997 Tahoe for $1500. I'm really excited! This is my first American V8 powered vehicle. It's spacious and comfortable. It's also the first vehicle I've owned with 4x4 and 4 wheel low gear. I took it up to the snowing mountains in Washington state, and it handled great. I have LT Rated 265/75/16 mud tires on now. It needed a few repairs, and leveling. Torsion key is cranked, and no rear blocks or leaf springs yet, but so many plans on what I'd like to do. I'm thinking about 5100's, Camshafts and springs and rockers next. And camping. I have an old mattress in the back now, rear seats folded down, and camping gear inside already for the next weekends adventure

I've got a 2001 K2500 big block 8.1 Suburban with the LT package. It has the Z55 autoride suspension so it is able to fit 285/75/16 Cooper AT3 tires with no problem. It's no rock crawler but it gets me everywhere I need to go here in the Rocky mountains in north Idaho. With the 8.1 it is also rated to tow 12,000 pounds and has done that many times (and over 12k several times as well). It really is a great combination for off road and overlanding.

Yeah, at altitude is where that 5.3 or 6.0 makes a difference vs the V6 suv's and smaller displacement trucks on the market. It's where my Pathfinder really struggles vs that suburban. There is always room for more torque and power, but overall, it does really well.

You put it heavy off angle? Feel like COG is too high for complex trails? You have about 13-14" of total lift there with the tire. You have any trail vids? A 3” lift with new beefy upper control arms ko2/3 tires. You should be able to go anywhere. The brakes can be swapped with the 2500 chassis brakes relatively easily for more bite. The control arms/ball joints are the weakest link in ifs and doing off-road stuff. Also tie rods are notoriously weak. Always good to upgrade to sturdier axles for front end as well. I dig the rig!

I think he just did the brake upgrade actually. Right now he is swappin his rear end...the eaton g80 went out finally but it was goin since he bought it. It isn't just the z71 that has the locker. Usually a factory tow package had the g80 and sometimes lower gearing. My Tahoe for instance has factory 4.10 gears and a g80 locker. The heavy duty towing package included a bigger transmission cooler as well. Always check the glove box for the rpo codes.

I have a 97 suburban with a RC 6" lift. I also live in new england. The trails here can be extremely difficult and rocks get slippery as hell, also the trails are TIGHT for this size wheel base. My favorite thing to do is wait for a super heavy snow fall and take this thing to the trails. Last time I was upto my frame in snow even with the lift. Drove through it like a dream. Also hate when the plows block my driveway in and it can be upwards of almost 3' or a little higher. Ill admit sometimes im too lazy to shovel through it to get in so i hit the bank with a little speed in 4 low and my truck just plows through it no problem. The burbans are pretty damn capable offroad. Mine i actually bought off my father in AZ. Did a motor swap and drove all the way back to massachusetts. He had 3, offroads all the time especially on elk hunts out by the grand canyon. Never had an issue. I will say, like any IFS front end, make sure he has inner and outer tie rods on hand at all times also new U joints and maybe a spare CV axle. It will save him on the trails eventually.

I got a small taste of off-road with my 2007 Suburban 2500 when I took my family and travel trailer to “The Wall” at The Badlands last summer. That whole trip out of the mostly flat land of woods and farmland that is Wisconsin made me want more. The tow pig has to primarily tow, and that cannot be compromised, but once the trailer is parked, I want to be able to grab the recovery gear, air down and go explore. She needs to remain mostly stock, as safe interstate towing at the GVWR is at odds with most off-road mods, and I do not want to add more weight. I have it leveled, decent tires, and the stock G80 locker in the back.
@KnightDriveTV
@KnightDriveTV 3 жыл бұрын
I really dont think you need much more honestly. If you can get a larger load rated tire on there, that gets you some height as well, and from there is mostly about just airing down to 20psi or so, getting a small arb compressor or similar and getting it done. Suburbans are mega capable we've learned.

Most budget stuff is going to be on amazon and just really read through reviews. All the chinese lighting has its quirks in terms of weatherproofing. Paying 10x-15x more for Rigid over china though...it's a very tough ask because the product is nowhere near 10x-15x better...maybe 1.5x better at most. We have run a lot of chinese lighting and it's plenty adequate in the pitch black desert.

Well, just recently talking to Josh, who owns this Suburban...he has been all through the vegas mountains, countless trails and like he points out, he has yet to get stuck and has tried pretty hard to do so. I think people tend to drastically overbuild for some theoretical trail challenge. I think you have to drive within the limits and slowly test more and more, the capability and I think people will find you can do a hell of a lot with a mildly modded truck.

Indeed, it was not standard on Z71 before 2004, but actually still a stand alone option. Easy identifiers in the RPO code and/or the fact that it immediately got sideways on oily wet pavement when test driving it and his is an 04.

I have a 02 burb z71 with a very similar setup bilstien 5100 shocks moog springs in the rear. I am going to replace torsion bars and upgrade the keys i consider this still stock. it is cool what you can do with the vehicle in stock or near stock format. once mods are added they become amazing beast's ! I used TOYO open countries for a while they were good at first but didn't wear well. ran Bfgoodrich AT KO2's they wear way better, they are much quieter than the toyo's I really like them. they don't self clean well in the mud, but in the snow that is a big advantage... I have wild peaks on my toyota matrix xr awd and i really like them on that vehicle! I am currently replacing the 5.3 with a built 6.0 and planning to do at least a 6 inch lift. I changed the gear oil in the rear diff and it no longer locks. GM finally is aware of this problem but you MUST use gm oil with NO friction modifier!!! everything I found at part stores lucas, royal purpal etc has some kind of modifier. Hope this saves someone from destroying their locker like i did. I want to replace the rear diff with a e locker or something different than the G80 that is in it now. any Idea's or suggestions? not opposed to changing the whole rear axle I just don't know what would work best on the burb. one day I may even change the front transfer case and front diff to something better... has anyone seen or have experience with good setup's?

Great video! I've been really getting into watching Suburban stuff lately, and it's great seeing one on a challenging Trail. I have a 5th gen 4Runner, which would probably be way better on stuff like this, but for some reason I just really want to ditch it and get a Burb. Maybe a Tahoe would be better, since I'm single with a dog and maybe don't need seats for 8 people, haha. I like my 4Runner, but I'm just not a Toyota guy I guess. The longer I own it, the more frustrated I get with the underpowered drivetrain. I recently added stock sized aggressive all-terrains to it, and it definitely degraded performance and fuel mileage. Very frustrating considering I stuck to a standard load, stock size tire just to avoid that. All these guys that lift these up with big tires and throw roof top tents and all that gear on them, I don't know how they can tolerate it.
@KnightDriveTV
@KnightDriveTV 3 жыл бұрын
I hear this from a lot of 4runner owners honestly. The Tahoe is hard to beat as its pretty similar sized to the 4runner and just has an abundance of power. I'd struggle to justify new toyota 4runner prices honestly....too underpowered for the size.

We did a lot 2wd stuff 2yrs ago. With another vehicle and some recovery stuff, you can do a lot with 2wd, but the open diff in the rear, means one wheel will get you stuck. Yes, they are E load range. We generally go down to 18 or so. With the rocks and sideloads, we just dont want to risk popping a bead if we can avoid it. 18 leaves a good level of "emergency" air down if we get really stuck but keeps you with a margin of safety. We air up with just some small pumps that connect direct to the battery, not the weak little cig lighter ones. Generally takes about 10min to air back up all 4. Thanks for watching...more off road and Corvette stuff comin ahead!

Found a burban with 77k miles but doubt I can sell mine and get it in time without being sold underneath me, lots of risk there Also I feel like the Tahoe is kinda worth the trade off because I feel like it's more capable off-road due the the fact of just shorter wheel base... @KnightDriveTV
@KnightDriveTV 4 жыл бұрын
Well, this is a factor that I encourage all people to look into. I see it in the Corvette world as well...the "wider is better"...which is generally true, but there are limits to where you begin to take pressure off the contact patch, per square inch and a wider tire equals a loss of grip, and a loss of braking performance (more rotational mass). Think of a train...slick metal wheels, slick metal rails, but lots of traction because of the small contact area and heavy weight. In drag racing, you'll see this decision factor of putting more rubber to the pavement, but not having too much. On another angle, in this scenario, there is that of rubbing and full compression and steering lock, once you go wider. In his research, I believe he felt that with the lift gain he was expecting that sticking with a narrower tire would reduce rubbing on the inner wells and provide more contact patch pressure. Lastly...Josh is a cheapskate so...less tire = less money to spend...lol. Truly though, the money I don't think was as much a factor as the other issues I mentioned, that led to his sizing decision.

Well, as he mentioned, he was going to run both in there..lol. Having the one, the vehicle seems to manage ok. This is why I encouraged him to remove the bowtie emblem, like you see partially done in the video. The idea would be the Camaro ZL1 1LE approach with the flowtie. I am going to design a venturi to insert into the bowtie, which supplements some of the lost frontal area with the light. He will still be at a deficit though. Rad mist sprayer was discussed also...sitting out in the desert on an abstacle, his temps do get up...and thats more of a fan cfm/heat rejection issue. With the evaporation we get, hitting the rad with some "swamp cooling" effect would drop those temps good. Once he is rollin though, he is stable at 190-200 with ac on. As with all mods...just kind test and run it, modify or remove if necessary, etc. We will see what he does in the future. He is still working on it.
