In this video we will have a look at the RC2014 Z80 based computer.
This great computer kit will help you with tuning your soldering skills, troubleshooting skills, learn CP/M operating system, and BASIC (Microsoft BASIC 85) programming, and more.
Let's PEEK inside and POKE around.

RC2014 Computer Slots
Listed here are the slots and cards I use on my RC2014 computer:
Slot 3 - Compact Flash card
Slot 4 - ROM card
Slot 5 - CPU card
Slot 6 - Dual Clock card
Slot 7 - 64K RAM card
Slot 8 - Dual Serial card
You should be able to place the cards in any slot, however I found this works best for my configuration.
You can find more information here.

A clock crystal frequency would be 4Mhz for ZILOG Z80 and ZILOG Z80A, I think that a ZILOG Z800 version should be created and would allow you to run the version of UNIX for the ZILOG Z800.

It would be great to also run UNIX! Thanks for commenting

These boards use a Z80 that can run at 8MHz but they are usually clocked at a slightly lower frequency of 7.3728MHz as that clock can be successively divided by 2 to generate clocks for the UART. i.e. 7,372,800 divided by 64 gives 115,200.

I learned Z80 on a Phi Deck. Dual tape drives. A whopping 6MHZ clock. Back in 1980. Fast forward to 2012 1200MHZ. PowerPC QUIC III. Signal integrity required.

A lovely kit, my only concern is about the reliability of those headers from the backplane, they can stand a very limited number of insertion cycles before starting to show faulty contacts.

I also "race" my BASIC programs. I do it on emulators, not real hardware. PC-BASIC always wins, of course. I wish i had the skills to build something like this.

What's particularly interesting to me about this is the CPU card could be replaced with other CPU cards to play with other architectures, the hard work can be amortized that way. Lots of exotic old CPUs out there that would be fun to play with that aren't popular with the retro community
@RudysRetroIntel
@RudysRetroIntel 2 ай бұрын
That is very interesting. It would be amazing to see other cpu cards used. I only wish I had time to work on that. Great idea! Thanks for sharing and commenting

They did that back in the 70s look up S-100 bus standard, you could swap to different CPU like 6502 or z80 etc.
