I had one of these as a kid around 1960 or so. It did work but poorly, only produced audile sound if you put your hand on the antenna coil, probably needed alignment. No idea what happened to it.

Would a switching power supply (e.g., Meanwell) be alright for one of these? Or would one have to use a linear power supply?

You could probably get away with a switching power supply if the signal is relatively clean; it is possible that excessive RF noise from a 'noisy' power supply could result in the radio exhibiting some audible interference.
