The test signal at 24:30 is called multi burst and is designed to measure frequency response and therefore resolution of the video. I used to do a lot of TV DXing in the 60’s and 70’s, and this set would have been an excellent receiver. I received TV stations from 41 different states over the years. Many late nights waiting for stronger stations to sign off and see what was coming in underneath when conditions were good. Makes me nostalgic for the days seeing all those weak noisy signals. With analog you could make out a picture when it was buried in noise, and digital it is all or nothing.

Back when TVs were actually pieces of furniture, not just wall-hangings like today. And you could fix them when they broke.
@rsattahip
@rsattahip 4 жыл бұрын
Today you can not even see half the components without magnification and good luck soldering some of those IC's even with the right equipment. Also, it never forgot it was a TV as do some of the new sets when a PROM loses its memory for whatever reason.
@OlegKostoglatov
@OlegKostoglatov 4 жыл бұрын
Very few actually repair those on the component level, usually they just replace circuit boards. Fortunately when something goes wrong it's usually in the power supply section where they still used some through the hole style components, and not strictly surface mount junk.
@Thujaplicata1
@Thujaplicata1 4 жыл бұрын
@@OlegKostoglatov I recently gave up trying to repair newer tvs. I hate surface mount components and lead free solder. I've fixed tvs for over 20 years, and all the newer ones end up having rediculous problems with then panels, or main boards involving huge surface mount ICS, often BGA. I really only do old stuff like transistor radios and old tvs these days. It's a hobby now. Wish it could be more than that but that's the way it is now.
@OlegKostoglatov
@OlegKostoglatov 4 жыл бұрын
That lead free solder fiasco burns me up, it was the E.U that started that nonsense. Save the environment by using defective solder, that causes equipment to fail prematurely, so it has to be replaced by more of the same from the PRC, who has just such a wonderful reputation for quality and "environmental stewardship". I don't know if the newer lead free solder has improved but two things it was noted for was tin whiskers and craked joints.
@Thujaplicata1
@Thujaplicata1 4 жыл бұрын
@@OlegKostoglatov you're right. I hung on for way longer than most people when it came to fixing tvs. Way longer. I got access to a massive amount of broken sets not long ago, the amount that were actually fixable was so low, I decided to call it quits. I now only fix older items that actually have a chance of being repaired.

I use to have a Beltron. Bought it new back in the day. I wasn't really enthused over it but it did shine when it came to rejuvenation. I could extend a customers CRT for about another year. Wow, what a MSRP markup they had on CRTs then. I made a killing on replacements.

The 25ap22a lasted about 3 years in a brand new set subjected to high-normal use. The plastic find tuning gear in the tuner was designed to break and had to be replaced as an assembly, buying an RCA was a mistake back then. Zenith TVs were things of beauty in their day. Anyone old enough to remember these things realizes they were not that great.
@JohnnyUmphress
@JohnnyUmphress 4 жыл бұрын
@@rsattahip True. I was a big Zenith fan back then even though I worked for an RCA dealer. I use to only buy Zeniths for myself too. But now I have a fondness for the old RCAs mainly due to nostalgia. I pulled a lot of service calls on RCAs back then. I am always on the hunt for a console but they are very rare down here in the Ozarks.

It's about time, who told you to take a vacation? (smile) I started fixing TV's about 50 years ago and have never seen anyone change the horizontal output tube in a running set. I've never seen Shango066 hook up a Roku to an old TV yet. Shouldn't be too hard to find the video input to hook into.
@OlegKostoglatov
@OlegKostoglatov 4 жыл бұрын
I must confess that I do use a variable transformer whilst powering up something for the first time, but I only power it up to see what I have to do next. I have a few isolation transformers but I have never actually used one, I've been working on Ac/Dc radios for years and figured that it's best just to stick to the one handed rule if it's live, or unplug the set if I need to do more more work to it. I don't lecture people about electrical safety, if you don't know your way around a soldering iron, or how to connect a plug to a power cord, then you probably shouldn't be working on tube electronics. If you want to discuss idiocy, the ones trying to figure out the polarity of a non polarized polyester film cap are something to contemplate. However if people didn't think that way then the health supplement industry, chiropractors, audiophool equipment dealers, and psychics would be all out of work.

My folks had an RCA color set, about like this one, but it didn't have legs, so it sat right on the floor. When you were doing the sensitivity on the tuner, the lowest power reminded me of the picture we got from an NBC and CBS stations about 100 miles from my parents house. Snowy picture, color lock, and sound with very little hiss. I agree with you Shango, some of those RCA's were awesome sets.

I've repaired hundreds of RCA TVs from that era. They all had failure prone flyback transformers. We used to say they came out of the factory with a guaranteed to fail flyback.They would also develop intermittent problems due to the tube sockets soldered directly onto the phenolic circuit boards. Heat-cool cycling would cause failure in the solder connections. The wafer switch type tuners required frequent cleaning. I could go on but you get the idea.

I had one in the late '80s. I think it was a CTC28 chassis. The color would blink on and off. What do you think caused that? At the time, I had no idea, as I was just beginning to work on tvs, but looking back, I think maybe the 3.579 Mhz oscillator crystal may have been getting flaky on me.

WHEN they work right they are great. Always loose connections. Flyback usually bad if original. VHF tuner gear breaks and channel display is in between channels. Horizontal goes out of sync easily compared to Zenith. All said this RCA model is beautiful. Nicer looking cosmetically then Zenith. The only ones I can recall being a problem were some of the early Zenith Chromocolor II sets, they had a crappy safety capacitor that would go open circuit, the high voltage would spike, causing arcing inside, which could apparently launch the guns right through the face of the picture tube. That was taken care of through an extensive recall program and all such sets with the defective safety caps were repaired within the first year. There are enough retired TV repairmen on here that would know of other such examples, most that I have heard of were early solid state colour TVs, the idea was a little too far ahead of the technology in such cases I think.

These RCA flys that had the cup connector on top were good for arcing down the side of the donut coil, the clones used a wire lead to the plate of the rectifier tube and were less prone to arcing. Beware of RCA 6GH8 tubes with the black filament coating, they are bad for H-K shorts, that holds true for all the black filament tubes, I quit using RCA tubes with those black filaments because of problems, the older white coated ones were much more reliable.

Anybody know the history why the HMV logo is shared with Victor RCA? As far as I know at this time HMV was owned by Decca (Marconiphone/Columbia) and was a UK company. Decca made some flippin lovely sets (with their Mullard tubes). In the UK of course we were decades behind the States for colour TV and it didn't appear until 1967 and the launch of our third TV channel (wow!) BBC2. I still remember very well waiting for the launch of the fourth channel, unsurprisingly called Channel 4 in I think 1982? The TV didn't start till 9.30am and it closed down around midnight until TV AM arrived in the mid 80s, then it wasn't long before CH4 and ITV (the independent channels) started broadcasting through the night. I remember bunking off school in the 70s to make sure I caught ''The Champions''. ITV in London was switched on with quite a performance in the mornings. First the colour bars might pop up and sometimes the test card or just straight to the clock where an announcer would say as the hand struck the twelve, '' This is Thames Television, broadcasting from the London transmitters of the Independent Broadcasting Authority'' and the wonderful start up music for Thames and would play through in full. (it is here on KZbin - Thames start up). Edit: I felt like I had been shot when they lost the broadcasting rights.

The reason for that is somewhat complicated, the Victor Talking Machine Company owned half of the Gramophone company of Great Britain, and when RCA bought out Victor in 1929 they took over Victor's share. The Gramophone Company merged with Columbia in 1931 creating Electrical Music Industries, or EMI, after which RCA owned 25% of the new company. For anti trust reasons RCA-VIctor first had to sell the American Columbia Records to Brunswick, then Brunswick sold out it's record division to the Columbia Broadcasting System in 1938, or CBS. RCA-Victor also sold off it's 25% stake in EMI in 1935, probably for similar reasons. I'm sure I got a few details wrong, but you almost need a flow chart to keep track of who owned whom, and why?

HMV (His Master's Voice) was started by Emile Berliner, inventor of the disk gramophone, to sell records and players. The trademark of a part terrier dog, Nipper, listening to a phonograph, and the company name came from a french painting. The HMV name, Nipper trademark, and gramophone patents were later acquired in America by the Victor Talking Machine Company (long, convoluted story), developers of the Victrola, a gramophone machine with its horn concealed inside its cabinet. Victor was eventually bought out by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA, and for many years, the company operated as RCA-Victor. In the late 1960s, the Nipper and His Master's Voice trademarks were retired, in favor of a block RCA logo, but after the purchase and subsequent split up of the company in 1984 by General Electric, the old brands started to re appear. The music division now belongs to Sony Music, the appliance division now licensed to Haier Group, and the consumer electronics division is owned by Thompson Group (Technicolor) who licenses the brand to several manufacturers, including Curtis Electronics. The last part of the old HMV was the Canadian arm of a formerly international music and gift retail chain, which closed five years ago.

It's a low-power analog TV station that transmits at the top of the low VHF band (band I), so it overlaps with the FM radio band (band II). That way you can pick it up with a TV on channel 6 and with am FM radio receiver at 88MHz. I think the transmitter is just across the Mexican border in Tijuana.

@@JacGoudsmit Channel 6's audio carrier is 87.75 Mhz. I first found that out in an old book about antennas from Radio Shack. Never forgot that because it led me to discovering that playing with the fine tuning knobs would bring in FM stations.

@@dwagner6 I'm guessing it is a Channel 6 analog TV station being used as an FM radio station. Channel 6 audio is 87.75 MHz. Most FM radios tuned by a knob can receive that frequency. TV DXers call these stations "Franken FMs", because they are actually used for the radio broadcast (the picture is merely an FCC-mandated inconvenience). I believe there are about 20 of them in the country. One such station in Chicago beat a 50kW class A clear in the ratings by a wide margin!
