we had that VCR, that was our very first VCR. we got that when we got the 25 inch RCA TV

You're right about the letter corresponding to the year - this is from model year 1985, which were manufactured and sold in late 1984 / early 1985. If I recall RCA did this until around 1988. 4:50 that's definitely dirt - there won't be any lubricant on the parts of the head that touch the tape so you're good there. To me ears, it sounds like it just needs a full set of rubber, from the squealing and whatnot.

@@KBTime - this is just exactly like the one my mom and me had as our first VCR which was in 1984 when we moved into our first house, which was the summer of 84.

I had one. It was around $600. at the time. It was mono, and wasn’t the best feature-wise, but I loved it.

I've repaired a couple of these in the past. Not too bad to change the belts on, its the circuits that are starting to get screwy.

does this model have the DC-DC convertor in the display circuit that always crapped out?

Yes, this one does. The larger-sized VKT-series VCRs used a different convertor.
