Thanks for the very helpful video, John. I just received my M1 in the mail yesterday and thanks to this video I was out flying it this morning. What an awesome little heli. Excellent John, I'm just about to do this for the first time. Previous helis have been PnP. Will follow your video - although in New Zealand we fly mode 1 so will change Tx first to mode 1 first. 🤞🏻

Thanks so much for this video! I just used your throttle and pitch curves on My OMP Internal RX model for my M1 plus I added the dual rates as well. Hoping to really start learning to fly this little guy rather than just hovering around. You videos have been a big help.❤️

Thanks for the walk through. Look forward to doing this soon when the M1 finally comes out. You should be able to access the sd card without going into this bootloader, just have to have the radio on and by default it will ask if you want to connect for simulator or sd card access.

Gréat help to set mine , I added a line on the hold to activate hold when in normal mode, hold switch off and the throttle < 90 ... a little bit tricky before finding the right approach

Just my humble opinion: 1) the cheapest model is good enough for general use 2) next is the model attached with TBS Crossfire external module. Only if you looking for flying long-range FPV; else the extra TBS module will not give any benefit. Also, TBS module only works with TBS Crossfire receivers, which are not cheap as well. 3) The most expensive model, is that comes with chrome plated casing, and some accessories, this give the TX a good solid looks, if not mistaken, this also comes with the TBS Crossfire external module. Personally, I own the model-(2), ordinary black colour casing with TBS Crossfire external module.

John, which protocol do you prefer using with the OMP helis? And thanks for your videos showing your basic setups in OpenTX. A couple days ago I did my first front flips. Haha. I even planned for them and didn’t crash. I’m hooked. 👍🏻

@Mark Linder - congrats on the flips 👍 Just from an ease of use stand point, I like the built in protocol. No external RX to mess about with. At the end of the day, it makes little difference of course provided you are okay with the pre-selected head speeds when using the built in OMP RX. I found they have them set to almost the exact same head speeds I ran them at before switching, but if you want better throttle control, then the internal OMP RX might not be a good option.

Great video John! Interesting to know you can change the pitch curves as i thought they were built in too. Buddy RC video have a model file you can download and channel 3 has no curves and just rolls from 0-100 when giving throttle on all flight modes on the input screen, but works as should when flying. Did you somehow managed to bypass the internal pitch curves by adding your own?

Yes. You can cater the collective range with pitch curve programming on channel 3 if you want to "tweak" the collective range from the pre-programmed ones using the single linear channel 3 output as shown in Buddy's video. You are of course limited to the reduced collective range in the low head speed setting (about -3 to +12), but can adjust it within that range if you so chose; just as I have done to give that 0 to +9 range in that mode. The only drawback is the collective response might "feel" a little lopsided (ie. like using a shallow pitch curve for the bottom half and steep curve for the top half); at least in the lowest head speed / tamest flight mode selection. For the other two head speeds/modes, the preset collective range is a symmetrical range of -12 to +12 so any pitch curves to alter within that range are possible.

I cover my two primary heli templates in two separate videos: External CCPM Mixing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpWpgKGahaxqrtEsi=NI8aug2Tv_Q3pJG4 (what the M2 uses) Internal CCPM Mixing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5KxqWBuaLx9m8ksi=XaYHNH0_yCDySe3K I will never just share files (I don't hand out fish, I teach to fish) because it only causes problems and crashes due to the simple fact every helicopter is mechanically different and thus the radio settings will be different. Too many would just copy the file and try to fly without doing all the correct adjustments to setup the helicopter correctly afterward.

John, last I looked at the Multi-Mode web site, a TAER version of OMP protocol is available for OpenTX. Currently Pascal does not seem to acknowledge this on the web page you reference in your video. I downloaded it to my Horus but am waiting to find out how this might affect channel mapping. I would prefer not to hang a Spektrum satellite or FrSky RX on this bird. Your note above on the optional use of custom pitch curves instead of the OMP's internal default is very helpful.

Direct off Multi-modules site: Channel re-mapping automatically re-maps channels to the order required by the protocol - it assumes that the order specified in the Mixer or Outputs matches the expected channel order of the MULTI-Module. Channel re-mapping is enabled by default for protocols which support it. As of MULTI-Module firmware v1.3.0.45 and OpenTX 2.3.3, channel re-mapping can be disabled for a model by checking the Disable Ch. Map box in Model Setup. Unless channel re-mapping is disabled in Model Setup, the channel order on the radio must match the expected channel order of the MULTI-Module (AETR, by default). All I can suggest is try it, or make a post in the Multi-Module forum.

@@Rchelicopterfun Thanks for your reply. I tried the TAER OMP protocol available in version.....77, and following the concepts illustrated in your video resulted in a stable hover in my basement. The only hitch is that throttle hold is only activated by flipping a switch (SF on my Horus) in the reverse direction to what I normally use. Reversing Output for Channel 5 doesn't fix this, nor does inverting the Mixes weight to -100%. I can fly it like this until I figure out a solution or find one.

this heli behaves strange with OMP protocol, so I set up the controller with every channel independently controlled with proportional inputs. and it seems channel 1, 2, 3, 4 are normal, but 5, 6, 7 are OMP specific and channel 6 is not pitch.

No - channel 6 is not pitch; I go over that in the video in detail in the channel mapping order section direct from Multi-Module's website screen shot in fact. Shows what every channel does. I have More OMP protocol tips in the description as well specific to using pitch curves with the preset collective output ranges.

Im confused as to why you would add throttle curves if they are already set in the internal OMP protocol. Is this something that needs to be done?

Because I used my OpenTX heli template and it was easier to just dial in 3 flat line curves over removing them in the mix edit and replace them with fixed outputs assigned to my FM toggle to select the 3 different governed head speeds.

Hi John, dont know if you still follow this vid,if you do i would like to ask a question. I need to replace my aging spektrum radio. Thinking of trying the OpenTX variety, i realise these are "complicated" to programme compaired to old school radio`s. After watching this and being a newb can i ask if you think the OMP protocol is hs good as the futaba and spek? it looks basic when you point out that all the currves are not needed. Do you miss anything from the spextrum system after changing? thanks

Hi Gary, always best to contact me through my website (rchelicopterfun.com) since I don't see every YT comment, but I do see every email I get and they always get top priority. Anyway, not sure what you're asking re. "is OMP protocol as good as Futaba & Spektrum". Are you asking about the robustness & range of the 2.4GHz frequency hopping or something else? As these are small helicopters & classified as "park fliers" you certainly are not going to get 1km+ range with the built in OMP protocol RX, but that has more with the RX, not the TX or the specific protocol being used. Regardless, you will lose practical visual control range long before RF range. As for the throttle output limitations of the built in OMP protocol RX over using an external RX with any other radio protocol (Spektrum, Futaba, or any OpenTX OS radio), their is really only one, and that is the 3 fixed governed head speeds. I fly ALL my OMP heli's with the built in OMP RX, and don't find the governed speeds limiting at all because they are very close to what I was flying with before using conventional flat line throttle curves. For me they work great. All depends if you are happy with the pre-set head speeds they give or not for your flying style. Pitch curves can of course still be used with the built in OMP protocol RX if you wish as I point out in the video description; fine throttle/head speed control is the only thing you lose with the the built in OMP RX. On the flip side, you gain telemetry with OMP's RX, and for some, they think that is even more important. Hi John, been a big fan of yours for many years. I am soon to receive a Radiomaster tx and will be setting up my OMPhobby M2 V2. Question for you I live in Australia and most of us aussies fly mode one. I've been Googling a lot and I have only been able to find reference to Spektrum flyers regarding regarding channel order. As you use Mode two which is AETR what channel order would I use. I know that I can keep changing until I get it right, it would save a lot of messing around if I could put the correct channel order in at the beginning. Love your work pal.

Hi Jim. Best to ask me technical question like this in the future through my contact info on my website as I don't see every KZbin comment and only have time to respond to a small fraction of what I do see focusing on subscriber's questions - which of course you are - thanks. Anyway, stick mode selection of the radio is done in OpenTX Companion when you first setup your radio in Companion. So even though the TX16S has had all that done already at the factory, you'll have to make that OpenTX software stick mode change in Companion and then the mechanical stick mode swaps within the radio gimbals. Unless you specifically ordered a Mode 1 TX16S in which case, you don't have to do any of that. Please understand, I've always run in stick Mode 2 myself, so I have no idea how the Multi-Module OMP operational protocol works in stick mode 1? I presume it's all taken care of in the radio software when you (or the factory) select the correct stick mode in Companion, and there is nothing to do or worry about, but I'm not an OpenTX or multi-protocol module expert. Like most people, I only learned & focused my efforts on what I needed to know in order to achieve my specific operational needs with the operating system, and nothing beyond that. I basically know enough about OpenTX to understand there is still much more to learn 🙂 If OMP protocol is not functioning on the correct channel assignment after you select the correct stick mode in your initial radio setup in Companion (or your TX16S came as mode 1) then you are likely going to have to look at the Multi-Protocol threads or open a new one in their forum on RC Groups (accessed through the Multi-Module.org website). That or perhaps someone else seeing this question and running on stick mode 1 while using OMP's protocol will chime in with their first hand experience. I would also think you could address any channel sorting issues out in the OpenTX mix menu setup after the fact if it's not working properly with the correct stick movement. With OpenTX, there are multiple ways to achieve the same end goal results. Good luck and take care mate 🙂

is there a way to use telemetry function to program TX16S to detect low battery from Heli and make a verbal warning ? I think OMP's own transmitter has battery level lights, so theoratically should be possible.

Can this be done with the Radiomaster TX12's internal module or is not possible to add protocols that specific radio ? Just getting into OpenTx, & getting an M2 Exp. The opentx wiki states "OMP - 77 Model: OMPHOBBY M1 & M2 Helis, T720 RC Glider If a CC2500 is installed it will be used for this sub protocol. Option in this case is used for fine frequency tuning like any CC2500 protocols so check the Frequency Tuning page". Does this only apply to TX's that have a CC2500 and NRF24L01? (edited for clarity + I'm lost :|...)

Hello. Buddy settings don't work for me. I created the model several times and repeated the settings very accurately. Trott. problem, pitch, hold problems. Unfortunately I changed the OMP in the app to your settings with complete confidence that they will work, but the problem remains. Thanks so much for this John, great info. I do have a question. You have the Mix for CH6 getting its input from Thr. Shouldn't the input be SE? It works fine how you have it but I am trying to understand OpenTX.

Channel 6 is the throttle channel in OMP's protocol, so I want it controlled by the throttle stick. The SE switch is still however selecting the individual throttle curves used for the 3 governed head speed outputs. It's of course possible to setup it up differently. There are many ways to skin the cat with OpenTX and this is what works for me. And as it turns out, this particular configuration also makes it possible to then create a logical switch to power off at low stick in one or more flight modes if you so choose - covered in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpexlYiBeLCKmZI If you are having trouble understanding OpenTX as it relates to collective pitch; as I recommend to everyone, OpenTX University's website is a must study. They have an entire section on OpenTX collective pitch RC helicopter configuration which is how I learned it, and how I have all my CP helicopters configured on OpenTX from the tiny micros up to 800's, even my turbine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGiaoJWmhdWserM

Hi John, currently have 2 M1’s which I love just bought an M2. I run a tx16 tx running 1.3.2 when I set to Multi Omp and try to bind im not having any success any ideas? I have an M2 V2 and a tx16s running 1.3.2.11 I’m pressing bind on heli till it blinks and beeps and tried it with and without hitting the bind option on the tx.

Hi Michael. Have you read the OMP protocol notes on Multi Modules website? You may have to adjust your RF tuning as explained there: www.multi-module.org/using-the-module/protocol-details/omp You may also have to use an earlier version of Multi-Module firmware if you still can't get it working, specifically 1.3.1.59. I doubt that's the case, but it's what I would try next if frequency fine tuning doesn't correct it. Understand, I'm not part of the Multi-Module development team; I'm only able to relay what is already available to every user on their website. You would have to contact them directly to report bugs. 👍🙂

Hi John, I have been using your setup with my M2 and Tx16s for a while and it works great! I learned a lot and now started learning 3D so blade pitch is even more important. I decided to check my blade pitch with a digital gauge since I replaced a few servo arms, and they were off center by one tooth each. Testing with a digital pitch gauge, the center is off by 1.6 degrees, Idle Up2 range of -9.8 to 12.3, (Idle Up1 range is worse: -7 to 10.4). I tried centering the servos and also used the M2 auto calibration mode. It flies great but the blade pitch bothers me. Question: Is this limitation or safety feature on checking the blade pitch while in throttle hold, due to the M2 Flight Controller, or all Helis? I tried setting the TX16S multiplexer to ADD and start from 0 and add whatever the throttle curve outputs, for testing, but that did not seem to move the blades. Many thanks!

Not sure I understand your question. If your swashplate is level and only the collective range is a little lopsided when you have selected the full collective range, you correct that by altering the centering position of channel 3 (your collective channel when using OMP protocol). As for checking blade pitch in throttle hold when using OMP protocol, there are several factors that might affect that behavior. Yes, the OMP protocol will limit collective output depending on channel 6 output (see important note in the video description). ​@@Rchelicopterfun I figured it out, silly, there is a PtH pitch hold curve, which puts the blades at 0 pitch when throttle hold is engaged. I just changed it temporarily for testing to use Pt2 curve and I can now see the pitch changes while in throttle hold (I still disconnect motor wires for safety). Well, I then found out I have a bent linkage rod. Thank you.

Question about the TX16S and opentx, I notice everyone used AETR. I have planes with Futaba and spektrum Rx’s in them. Would I be able to select the channel assigns for each Rx I bind to the TX16S or is it set for everything and I’d have to switch the servos around on the Rx? For example my Futabas are the AETR, but my spektrum Rx are TAER.

@Passin Thru - Ch 5 in this example is an On/OFF selection, or if you prefer -100 to +100% channel output selection. In short there is no multiplexing so it doesn't matter what you have selected in that field.

Hello John, First, Thank you so much for a great detailed video! I was a little concerned about the setup with the internal OMP receiver, but after watching your video, I couldn't resist and bought the M2 Explore (upgraded) with the Tx16S. I am relatively new to the hobby, (fly fixed pitch micro like E119) but got familiar and comfortable with OpenTX. Just finished following your video setup, and am ready to go and fly this weekend. Question: I noticed out of the box, my main rotor blades feel very tight. I watched your video about Blade Grip Torque, my blades stay in their place no matter how much I shake the Heli. Can overly tight blades cause the Heli to tip over and crash, or is it just a performance issue? Do the blades straighten themselves with centrifugal force? Thank you very much.

@yali - blades on the M2 should be fairly loose. Not so loose they swing sloppily about, but they should be fairly easy to move back and forth in the grips, and of course both be fairly equal in torque. If blades are too tight or vastly uneven in tightness, you'll notice odd cyclic wobbles while flying or transient vibrations. You need them loose enough to easily lead and lag in flight and yes, they are constantly self centering dependent on drag and blade flap/angular momentum.

Have you assigned your Hold pitch curve to your hold switch as it is no longer related to the flight modes..? Otherwise I think when in hold it will retain the last pitch curve selected

Hi John. Great video and I actually understood it all. I have the Tx16s and an omp M2 is on the way. In your e book you advocate to learn without using 6G and all that stuff. Yes I agree and do not want to cheat but use my skills. I understand that the rudder channel 4 must always use a gyro otherwise it would be hell to fly. My case is this... I do not want to learn 3D. I just want to fly it around like a real one ...so do I need the mode whereas the collective is centre stick? Ie giving full positive and negative pitch? What do you advise for my needs? I can see that there may be a call for a little negative pitch if she gets carried away with the wind. I don't think a newbie like me needs all those settings.I just want to keep it really simple. Slow and sedate. What do you advise please? Pete

Hi Peter, I cover this question in detail in my flight school on my site. No you don't want any negative pitch when first learning to hover a CP heli - in fact, that's the last thing you want. Learning to hover & then later fly a CP heli is a ground up methodical method - baby steps. First learning the true feel of cyclic while on the ground (light on the skids), and then when in a low ground effect hover - no negative is used. This is the only training method that properly & safely builds the foundation of piloting an RC collective pitch helicopter regardless of flying style (normal/scale, sport, F3C, or 3D). In other words, the basic tail in hover is the skill from which all others are built upon. I now have two S3s, four brand new XP K110S and a M2 Explore on the way. If I crash I now have back up. Thank you so much for your support. I would be lost without your e books, videos and web site . Hi John, great video. Tried setting up my OMP Explorer using a template I built using your CCPMint example. Since I fly all my helicopters with Spektrum receivers I have my t16s sent up with the channel default as TAER and the firmware is the same. Following this video I couldn’t get the proper channels working. I’m new to Open Tx and helicopters in general. But the TAER setup works perfectly with all my other Spektrum receivers, just not the OMP internal one. I know the channel mapping is different with the OMP receiver, but just don’t know what I have to change the TAER to in the radio. Any help is appreciated!

Unfortunately, it's pretty much impossible to sort OpenTX programming issues remotely - there are just too many variables. I would need to see the heli and radio in person to narrow down the reason/s. I would start the diagnosis process at the channel output monitor screen to ensure stick/toggle movement correlates to the correct channel. That is single most powerful diagnostic tool you have with any computerized radio. And yes, with OMP protocol as you know from this video, channel mapping is different from conventional. You don't have to change the TAER order in the build options of the radio, you will change channel mapping order in the mix programming as I show in the video starting @ 13:03

Yes, if you have the OMP protocol version of the M1. The M1 also comes as a Futaba S-FHSS protocol version, which of course means OMP protocol would not work with it.

Well the download page give you the possibility to,download the firmware for the Jumper TX série :) But no telemetry to get the heli,battery level :)

Hi there , thanks for the Video ..im a Bit curious of i could use the tx12 for v761 Protocol as the tx12 does have internal multi-modul and the v761 seems Not to Need additional hardware..Strange is , the tx12 doesnt Have it Stock but the tx16s does..you know someone got it to work? Its for Binding with the eachine warbirds. Kind regards

You will have to visit multi-protocol's website to find if the correct protocol is available for your specific multi module on your specific radio and if so, what firmware release/s supports it.

So how have found this John, compared to your conventional setup? I’m contemplating what route I will take, I do like the idea of the external rx setup as it’s more inline with other models.

I've got it setup pretty much identical to what it was... Same collective ranges, same cyclic & tail expo & dual rates. So there is really not much of a difference. The only difference is using the 3 governed head speeds over the 3 speeds I was using before with throttle curve outputs. Out of the three, stunt 2 throttle is no different since I had it at 100% power before as well. ST1 is also almost the same (perhaps a little slower in the governed mode). Normal seems a little faster than what I had before in my normal flight mode and of course the ability to throttle off in normal at low stick but a little logical switch programming in OpenTX can solve that. With OMP protocol, in the normal mode, it sets the lowest head speed and reduces the collective range somewhat. You still have to check your collective pitch range of course to get the collective range you want by altering your pitch curve; at least if you want a different collective range to tame it even further. Set your dual rates as well if you want tame cyclic & tail response - just like setting up any other CP heli in other words 🙂. You can of course also setup tamer pitch curves in the other two modes to tame down collective response if you want - you'll just be running a higher head speeds then.

@@Rchelicopterfun thank you, question though, I keep having people on rcgroups tell me that in omp protocol you cant change pitch or throttle curves, you can only set up expo and dual rates to tame it down. Is that not correct? You are not setting up dual rates in this video??

Not correct on pitch curves. Why, because you can assign curves to any output channel to alter the output to anything you want it to be - in this case, collective / CH3. WITH the caveat that I already mentioned above - that you MUST stay within the already reduced collective range that the OMP tame mode automatically selects. Anyone who tells you otherwise clearly doesn't understand collective pitch RC helicopter setup, OMP's configuration, or computerized radio programming. Do you have to use pitch curves when using OMP's preselected collective outputs for channel 3? Nope; but that doesn't mean you can't to cater your collective response to how you want your helicopter to behave. If you read the information in the video description, I cover this pitch curve/CH3 subject in more detail; & yes I absolutely use dual and expo rates as I do with all my collective pitch helicopters helicopters. After all, I want all my CP helis to behave as consistently to each other as possible from little ones like this up to my 800's, so I set them up to get similar control response. As for throttle curves... as shown in the video, I used 3 different flat line throttle curve output settings (-100% 0% & +100%) to get my 3 governed throttle speeds. I did it that way because of consistency as that is how I have all my other helicopters with governors that required fixed outputs for different speed selection setup. You can of course program your CH6 governed head speed output any way you want to get your three -100, 0, &+100 outputs. With OpenTX, there are usually many ways to get the same end channel output result.

Sorry, I don't share my files. Why? 1. Main reason... It would not be fair to all my customers who paid for my collective pitch setup & tips ebook & my setup help over the years. They are the reason this channel even exists. 2. It doesn't teach people a thing about how to properly setup a collective pitch RC helicopter or use OpenTX. 3. It's a huge hassle then trying to explain how my specific settings work and why I configure my radios the way I do. 4. I know exactly what happens because I have tried it for a few people just to see how it would play out. People just used the settings unaltered even though I warned them about that. Not a single one confirmed the mechanical setup of their heli and then adjusted the outputs according so the collective range and the symmetry of their collective range would then be correct for proper pitch angle. These are not mechanically simplistic quad copters after all; every single collective pitch RC helicopter has mechanical variation - even the exact same RTF models. The result of all this... A crash on first spool up, and I get blamed for it because they didn't understand the basics of collective pitch setup. Never again.

Nope. Companion is all about the operation system (OpenTX) of the radio/transmitter. The multi module is a separate component in the system. Essentially the same thing as hooking a peripheral device up to a computer.

Yes on Companion - you use it update OpenTX firmware, and make model backups, radio back-ups, radio simulations etc. No on Mulit-Module. It's not used for radio component customizations. The Multi-module is an RF module that has many RF protocols built into it and the list is always growing. Firmware updates to it via Multi-Module org's website are done to get new RF protocols (such as the OMP protocol shown in this video) & bug fixes within the multi-module's firmware. The multi-module is a totally separate RF component from the radio. Either an internal multi-module like in a Jumper or Radio Master, or an external multi-module like the iRangeX. I highly recommend spending time on Multi-module org's website. They have a wonderful tutorial on what multi-protocol is all about and how it works.

The tx12 has a very basic & limited mult-protocol internal module. Omp protocol is likely not supported, but you're best to ask specific multi module support questions like this on multi module .org's forum to be 100% sure as I'm only 90% sure.

according to github.com/pascallanger/DIY-Multiprotocol-TX-Module/blob/master/Protocols_Details.md#OMP---77 it says "This protocol requires both a NRF24L01 and CC2500 RF components to operate." --> the TX12 unfortunately only has the CC2500 RF chip --> OMP protocol not supported :-( As far as I understand, it would be an option to actually add the "real deal" 4-in-1 multi module to the TX12 and get it to work with OMP protocol. Since I just switched to TX16S (from my 10 year old Turnigy9x - early days of opentx!) maybe somebody should confirm before you go and buy the 4-in-1 :-)
