I like these little Rx's too because I fly in a low noise no crowd environment. The next model up has the sat port and I fly that setup in a 2M sailplane to visual limits. Removing the shell and adding some shrink tube allows for tucking these into a small corner of the fuse. Amazing item for the price.

Great vid as always. If anyone is still watching this... I have a quick question. I want to rewire the Antenna for a little RC submarine. I will be using coax to poke the antenna through the conning tower. Is the ground plain on the bottom of the board OK to use as ground for the coax?

these new orange receivers are very very good, compared to the old ones those who came without a case. I tried this same one on my parkzone Radian and sent it way up high in the sky without a problem, now i am using a 9ch Orange on my 80 inch sebart sukhoi 140 (1500 bucks plane) and its working perfectly there too. Bruce, its been a while since i last watched one video of yours and your KiwiEnglish still entertains me a lot, also reminds me of wonderful NZ :) :)

So how about the diversity thing? I opened mine and from what i saw the antennas go through a cap each (coupled) to a CMOS switch. I presume the chip switches between antennas and uses the the one with the best signal. Just an educated guess...Bruce please confirm :)

These are brilliant receivers... Had them in my glider flying until it's a dot and never failed. Tested it a few weeks ago on the ground to 2.1km with stock dx6i tx... Will go further but ran out of road!

I'm having no end of trouble trying to get these things to bind to my DX8. I connected everything up today and all worked as it should. Great, I 'll go flying next day. Next day at the airfield nothing happened, no yellow flashing light at all. Turned power of the plane to ON (TX still off) and the servo moved, then hit the Bind Button and turned TX on - nothing happened, no lights came on. Dead as a Dodo. Can't figure out what's happening and why it worked ok one day but the next day it didn't want to bind. Any ideas? You mentioned something about a Brown Out on the video. If that happened how does one 'cure it"? I' m open to any suggestion. Great video Bro.

I have a question that I hope you can answer. I have an older Orange 6 channel DSM2 transmitter. Can these bind to a Spektrum receiver? I can't get it to bind to my AR636B in my Turbo Timber and I suspect the radio is too old. The AR636B manual says it should work with any DSM2/DSMX radio. Any ideas?

I enjoyed your video presentation of the Orange 6CHs DSM2 receiver from Hobbyking. One question I have is how critical is the placement of the receiver antenna's within the plane? I read somewhere, can't find it, that one antenna should be vertical and the other at 90 degrees. Do you have any experience with the suggested placements or lack thereof? Thank you. Dennis Merino

Thank you for the review Bruce and especially the humor at the end. Question: Any idea why OrangeRx puts out their own T-Six (DSM2 xmtr), a DSMX xmtr module, but not DSMX native xmtr? Or to put it another way, why not upgrade the TSix to DSMX? Thoughts?

These receivers use diversity. You can see tracing back from ANT1 and ANT2, it goes through a matching cap into an RF switch IC (the black square on the furthest left), then out of the RF Switch it hits the balun matching network then into the main RF Chipset.

Yes, I forgot to put that on the video. I will check to see whether it switches the antennas intelligently or whether it simply alternates between them (as some other brands do).

have u use this orangerx to pixhwak ? ( i am using spektrum radio) here is 2 question: 1) when i try to setup the failsafe , and try turn off my radio see what is the the throttle value when i turn it off ( the lowest value is 1088 when the radio is ON, when i turn it off it suppose lower then 1088) . however when i check the radio calibration page at mission planner when i turn off the radio , the throttle value didnt drop at all, it just stay at the value which when i turn off the radio. ( for example if i push to 60% of my throttle before i turn it off, i will stay there ) but the board still able to detect if lose the radio signal and failsafe will kicks in if i turn off the radio (as long as i set the failsafe value is lower then 1088) ... is it safe ? cause when i use same radio rx with PPM Encoder with my other previous build, it will drop the throttle value if i turn off the radio...will it a matter ? 2) when i arm and try to fly, seems like the throttle is kinda working delay , every time i move the throttle up and down it will move 1 or 2 second delay and wont response immediately .

Hey! I am currently using one of these receivers. Is it possible to extend the length of the receiver antennae? On one of my models I have found that at certain angles, battery pack and motor screen the signal and reduce the range. I have tried repositioning the receiver. I get very similar results with the Orange R615x too. I am hoping to extend the antennae to avoid the issue. Any thoughts folk?

I've used the R615, and 620 in all of my planes, for over 2 years now. I use them with my Spektrum radio. Anything from park flyers to my .46 Christen Eagle II and my 1968 Andrews Aeromaster .60. I have NEVER had any issues and the range is great. BEST bang for the buck, if you ask me! My Spektrum RX's are the only one's I've ever had an issue with.

This may apply to anyone using a real Spektrum TX and some other DSM2 receivers; although I've also seen good reliability from HK Orange RSM2 receivers. I've been experimenting with the Hobbyking Micro Multiwii board with a DSM2 receiver on board and a real Spektrum TX module in a 9X. On the bench there are a lot of connection drop outs, sometimes 10+ seconds to reconnect. It could be wifi interference, but the wifi around here is not that busy. It doesn't matter too much for bench testing, but I would want to proove it on the ground over a distance before flying. I have only ever used the Spektrum TX module with small BNF models before, with no problems. I recently bought a Orange DSM RX (long antenna) and satellite for range testing after we had some 2.4G reliability questions late last year at a local field field. Always range test and know your gear before flying.

This orangerx receiver didn't work so well for me, it made my quad yaw and drift to random directions. I set the sub trims on the TX so that every channel reads 0 on the KK2 and after a few minutes of flying the quad starts drifting and the numbers have changed. I replaced it with the OrangeRx R620 and now the quadcopters stays nicely trimmed.

The module actually does do DSMX Bruce. The light on it will blink and tell you which mode it's in once bound with the RX. Working Modes DSM2 2.4GHz Transmitter Module has four working modes. Power on the radio and the LED on the back shows the current working mode like in the below table. LED Working Mode ------------------------------------- OFF DSM2 1024/22ms * DSM2 2048/11ms ** DSMX22ms *** OSMX 11ms One flash means DSM2 two flashes mean DSMX and three mean OSMX. I've tested it against both DSM2 and DSMX and it did give the proper indication.

The antenna cables look pretty small. Is that normal, or do you solder a bigger antenna onto them?
@TignMeg
@TignMeg 11 жыл бұрын
The antenna cable length is defined by the frequency being used, For 2.4g a full wavelength is 12.49cm which could be used but manufacturers generally use the more convenient 1/4 wavelength antenna at 3.7cm. Changing the antenna length may stop the receiver working if its not an exact wavelength, half wavelength or quarter wavelength..

I use that TX module in my Taranis and 9x to fly my mCPX in DSM2 mode and 130X in DSMX mode. Yes, it does work with DSMX. It's a bit annoying to change modes, you have to click the button on the back 3 times quick and there are 4 modes you have to cycle through. It has two DSM2 (11ms and 22ms) and two DSMX (11ms and 22ms) modes. I don't have any Spektrum RX that work with the 11ms frame mode so I haven't tested that but the 22ms in DSM2 and DSMX seems to work fine.

Since I have no other DSM2 receivers to compare it to, and since each transmitter brand has a different level of "range test power", a range check would be rather meaningless. Suffice to say there seem to be plenty of folk flying them without running out of range.

***** You have a spectrum analyser now though. Grab a variable attenuator and bolt it to the output of a module and measure the output power. Then increase (or decrease) the attenuation to make the output power match between them. Alternatively grab a fixed attenuator to reduce the range on a module at full power and then measure the range. Finally you should measure the output power of the OrangeRx module and see what its actually transmitting at! Is DSM2 at US output power (200mW) or EU output power (100mW).

Yes. The main reason I bought this was just in case I ever got a Spektrum BNF model and wanted to fly it using my Taranis transmitter :-)

I have had trouble with the orange receivers with short antenna's, I have had receivers with the wrong length wire (nearly lost a glow model due to these rx's). I LOVE the orange receivers with the longer coax antennas, and have range tested the coax antenna receivers and get better range than Spekturm receivers.

I have purchased nearly 30 of these for myself and my flying buddies and only had one bad one. The one "lemon" didn't have any Rudder output. I still used it in a small, 23 inch foam board Real Thing as a 3 channel receiver.

One "issue" with these receivers is that there is a failsafe that kicks at signal loss. That means if you accidentally turn off the transmitter first the motor starts to spin! Apart from that this is a great receiver!

would these bind to a FlySky FS-T6 Transmitter ?

+Cobin Bluth No, they wouldn´t, the FS-T6 uses ADHDS and the are DSM2 which is one of Spektrums protocols. But why would you even want them for an FS-T6, the FS-R6B receivers cost literally 10$ :)

There is no ppm or rssi for orange rx but you can use orange sat rx (only) with naze 32 flight controller and maybe kk2.0

These are very good receivers. I would say about 5-10% are duds. I own several. Bruce can you review the *******Lemon RX********. I have a few and I have obtained killer paces on range test.

What that chinglish is saying is that if you bind the module to a DSMX receiver then it will stay in DSMX mode because it can't know what mode the receiver is using. If you bind it to a DSM2 receiver it will stay in DSM2 mode. If you switch between DSMX and DSM2 then you have to rebind. Therefore note down on paper what mode each of your receiver binds in (sometimes a DSMX receiver will bind in DSM2 mode). Admittedly I'm not directly translating the chinglish. It's what I know from browsing the RCGroups thread on the module.

These don't buddy-box very well. I had this rx bound to a DX6i and buddy-boxed with a DX8. When flying, as soon as i took control back to my DX6i, it took a few seconds before the plane would react. Not great when you want to take over to avoid a crash. We swapped the orange rx for a genuine Spektrum AR600, and all the problems went away.

I have ordered one of these with telemetry built in so I can test it with my Spektrum DX8. Got to love third party manufactures =-)

Thanks Bruce, been waiting a long time for this review, albeit as you say past its use by date. What would be appreciated is a review of this TX module and the newer Orange R800X receiver (claimed to be DSMX), and investigate the whole DSM & DSMX modes of operation on an analyser as mentioned by Topxe below.
