If you fly an electric-powered RC model plane then you need to know a little about BECs (battery eliminator circuits), what they are, what they do and how they work.
In this video I probably tell you more than you need to know -- but I hope you find some of the theory interesting and helpful.

Bruce, you are (and have always been) one of the greatest contributors to the hobby of R/C model flyingand R/C drones. This is information that EVERY R/C hobbyist should understand before they even get their wallet out for the first time. Better still, it's bloody FASCINATING ... even for us Old-Timers. Many Thanks from the UK.

when you need to really fully understand how an rc component works you go to school and watch Bruce's videos/class....Extremely informative video! Excellent!!! Thanks Bruce!

I just learned more in 25 minutes than I learned in an entire semester of circuits in college! Showing my kids this so circuits don't seem so daunting as they did for me many years ago. Thank you!

My god sir.... with all due respect you are the best to learn electronics from.. Ive been trying to learn electronics for about id say 7 yrs now on my own and never have i learned about any certain electronics without having to go over the explination atleast 5 times to be 100% sure i understand. But the way you explain things yoy make it so obviously clear i am so in tune with the way you teach! if i lived near wherever you teach i would dfinately take your class...shit you may not even be a teacher ill still pay you directly just freakin teach me please...You are one awesone dude! Good job sir!

Some people just have the inate talent to explain and "show" things well. Even in ages past there were the village storytellers who awed their listeners with how well they described their topics. This video also shows good use of visual "teaching aids". Thank you for making and posting this video as well as for the other videos you've posted before. Mabuhay! (Long live!)

That's amazing. Thanks for making this video. I'm currently making a quadrocopter from scratch, I'm programming the circuit board, radios, etc. and I recently realized that the brushed motors I were using didn't provide enough power to get it off the ground. Now I've switched the design to use brushless motors with some good ESC's. Fortunately I designed the circuit board to run off of 7.4V, so I won't need a BEC, but this was a fascinating video nonetheless!

Great video Bruce, very well explained and it's great how you back up the theory with experimental evidence. I have an AX 40A brushless ESC in my Skywalker which contains an SBEC in one package and it hardly gets warm on account that the Skywalker doesn't draw anywhere near that sort of current. Separate ESC's and BEC's must be less common than combined ones as I've only personally ever seen people with the later ones.

Thank you for this very informative video! I'm reading up on BEC's because apparently my new Avios BushMule is at risk of havinf brown outs when using 4S. The 2 inbuild BEC's (liniear) are supposedly not up to the task. I'm was looking into what the BEC liniear and switching meant, for I'm going to get a 1 SBEC to replace the 2 inbuild BEC's. Really well explained, even I could understand. Thank you Sir Bruce!
