"Too much beer" Darn you Bruce! I spat the water I was drinking all over my laptop when I heard that. I am not at all surprised to see you find that the simple things are missing from this quad. I have had a DJI Phantom 1 as well as there F550 for over a year now and they just work... all the time, never had an issue with either of them. I don't mind paying more even if it's double, as long as when I go to use it.... it works. As for the 25 minute flight time, well I will take the under on that bet. Thanks for the review, I was tempted but already you have made me realize why I like the DJI product more.

It feels like Walkera listened to a lot of your suggestions :) Received mine but 2 days ago and did a short-range test using a Hubsan tx/miniLCD (the one that comes with the H107D lol) for a spotter and a Devo 10. They fixed the stability in the feet, updated motors AND their firmware. I could swear they went through your suggestions like a shopping list!

If you look at the video at 5:20, you can see where the soldering iron melted the plastic of the air frame. If you didn't do it, they went over the solder joints before shipping it to you.

Wow. I'm surprised he missed that. I'll use this video in all future "Should I buy Phantom or Walkera?" questions on RCGroups. I've always felt that Walkera is a sub-par brand, their products always come across as something you buy if you can't afford the good stuff. The user-friendliness and construction quality is miles away from what you'd get from DJI. DJI isn't perfect, some people have issues with their gear, but overall I would highly recommend Phantoms to anyone who wants to get into the hobby.

I've been learning a lot about the 'collateral gadgetry' that comes with aerial photography from you, sir, many thanks. Looking forward to your flight tests for this particular model (I ordered one some days ago), and more so your thoughts on it and the extent of its applications. I wonder as well why Walkera isn't making more of a deal with that APM magic they've got hidden in there. Maybe it behaves funny during mapped flights..we'll see? Happy flying on the weekend, cheers!

Thanks for the review Bruce. I always enjoy your videos and straight forward commentary. I recently purchased the plug and fly version of this quad and as you said, the lack of documentation is maddening. I am using the FrSky system and a Turnigy 9XR and thanks to RCGroups I was able to successfully get the quad off the ground. I have brushless gimbal I purchased from banggood and would like to place it on the PRO. Can you show the connections from the gimbal to the quad?

Great video as always Bruce. I own a QR X350 Pro and during last fly one spinner unscrewed, a propeller fall off making a huge quad crash at max speed on a muddy field. Gimbal has been touched badly and all wires were cut. I'm trying to figure out where to connect the 3 wires "roll - tilt - ??" from the gimbal controller to the receiver. Can someone tell me on which aux and in which order they connect to? As you mentioned no wiring diagram are available in the docs... So I'm actually quite stuck and unsure. Thanks :)

At 10:55 you seem to have a bit of an issue with lateral balance. I got one of the newer iLook cameras with the cloverleaf antenna and it comes with a small fixture you put around the tilt motor which balances the gimbal.

Hi Bruce i have a few quads, i had the QR X350 and through my own fault had a couple of crashes the first one was not to bad cracked the top frame the second crash was a total frame arm breakage so i had to get another frame and the cost of both frames was the same so i got the pro frame and changed the innards from the broken QR X350 into the QR X350 pro had to do a bit of reconfigure but i have it all back in and working as it was on my DX8 Keep up the good work on all your especially on the Quadcopter seen with different operating configurations.

The solders on the unit I got are very decent, actually. It flies like an overheating dream is the truth. It does go over 20 minutes if the whole gimbal system and camera are removed (17 minutes with all that). From your review, they've changed down to what look like much lower rpm motors. It looks like it has 15A ESCs? The motors ALWAYS come back feeling just a bit too hot for comfort, that's the truth. The killer is that you could end up crashing the thing RIGHT OUT THE BOX because only a small, innocuous little leaflet tells you how to actually set your MIX and GEAR switches to work for the gimbal. Some people might ignore the gimbal setup information and find that it was actually ESSENTIAL to the FLIGHT of the thing. I agree 100% with your opinions about commercial models: they should really pre-configure that themselves. All that though, on Manual (Stabilize is the closer truth) it flies like a hawk. Awesome tuning on tiny cheap mismatched parts.

Bruce, I would like to personally thank you for the spledid work you do. Your attention to detail and ability to simplify the technology has won me over to joining the RC community. I've been watching all of your videos and have enjoyed them all - with the exceptions of the ones where you are explaining your legal problems with the idiots that can't seem to recognize the value that you add to the community. Shame on them!!! I'm sorry you are going through all of that. I am sure it must be quite stressful, and I want to think you for pushing on, despite all of that. I have been researching my very first RC device and chose the QR X350 Pro. I watched your site day after day for your review on this, but I couldn't wait and just decided to get it. I wanted to get the Phantom 2, but the cost was just too high. When I say to high, I want you to realize that sinking a grand into a new hobby is hard to do - especially if you don't know the lingo very well and don't have a fellow hobbyist to talk to about it. Anyway, I wanted something I could spend a few hundred dollars on and then learn what I like and don't like and then be able to have something to compare it to. I was originally thinking about building my own from scratch, but even with lots of sites that show what they have done, I am still left wondering would I be building something that would fly for two minutes and then crash and burn. So, a few months ago I bought my very first RC item - a Turnigy 9x transmitter/receiver. It looks to be fairly nice. I realize it is not as nice as some others, but remember, I want to learn without spending hundreds of dollars to realize I should have gotten a different one that everyone else is now getting. I have to admit the programming in the transmitter is so confusing to a newbie like myself, but I am forcing myself to figure out what it is all about. I opened it up and inspected all the soldering, and it was actually done quite nicely. Also, i found that if you plug in a trainer cable to the back and leave the switch in the off position, you can program it WITHOUT that annoying beeping!!!! Anyway, back to the quad... I bought the QR X350 Pro over the other choices just because it looked to be very promising. While I waited for the quad to arrive, I went out and bought a few lipo batteries, balance/charger as well as some other goodies. When the unit finally arrived, I opened it and inspected all the soldering with a fine tooth comb. The solder on my unit actually looks very good. However, the instructions are terrible - ESPECIALLY for a newbie like myself. You probably know what they are talking about, but I had to read things 10 times to figure out the simple stuff. I bought the QR X350 Pro version without a receiver in it... and that is where the problems started. I figured I would take my Turnigy 9x receiver and insert it into the unit. Well it doesn't fit into the space provided without removing the case, which is okay I guess. But what is confusing is what channels to connect to the control unit. I am so confused. I tried all kinds of configurations till I finally realized that I needed to insert the "BIND plug" in the first positon on the DEVO-M if you are not using one of the DEVO radios. Mention this in your next review!!!! Also, I think channel 5 needs to go into the GEAR on the controller. Then the unit will initialize!! So after spending several days trying to figure out how to get the thing to spin up, I accidentally must have dangled a wire onto the power board and shorted it out. UGHHH. Now I have to replace it. Sounds simple for you guys, but they don't sell things like this in the USA - it takes weeks to get a replacement. Make sure to mention that in your next review the best parts to stock up on. :) I would also like to agree with you, Bruce, that the gimbal is a joke to install!!! Ughh! should be "snap-on" Walkera, you listening to Bruce? Thanks for listening to my story... But I do have four questions. Q1: Is there a way that I can "bypass the built in power board" to get the controller working until I get a replacement stock board???? Q2: Can someone give some programming help with the Turnigy 9X for: (1)the three position switch to work with flight modes, (2) the Return to Home using the GEAR switch, and (3) the gimbal tilt and roll with any of the three knobs? Q3: Would anyone recommend the er9X firmware over the stock 9x firmware? If so, what programming settings would be recommended. Remember, I'm a newbie hear and would definately appreciate the help... even a link. :) Q4: How can I test that the radio is working BEFORE launching it into the air and realizing that I have it all set up wrong? Any advice? I did buy a few servos which should be arriving shortly? I am so looking forward to your Part 2. Please feel free to ramble on and on about anything you would think it helpful to the community (including newbies such as myself) Best wishes to you and your followers! Thanks!

APM 2.5 or 2.6,... the diff is an external Mag component. Don't see it in the vid sequence but I would love to have a closer look at everything!!!. Have they actually folded the PCB layout into the much smaller footprint of the Devo-M? Sure there is a lot of theft of Open Source platform without mention. Case in point the Taranis which uses OpenTX FW. Such is life I suppose. Anyway there is a June 2nd YT vid by DIYDrones that shows the successful connection to Mission Planner (at 57.6 BTW) and the programming of the Walkera QR 350 Pro , Flight modes, Waypoints and the Full parameter list. Still you need to figure out how to hook up Telemetry radios for real time use of MP as a ground station.

Great review, worst thing about these is that you can't use any old battery in it. You must use a purpose built battery as nothing else will fit inside! Why can't they just make it so you can use any RC Car battery inside it? I already have about 30 RC car Lipo batteries and not one of them fits and they just don't fit by about 20mm. Very frustrating!! (-;

stewjw I've just been flying HKs new SkyMule as an FPV plane. Early days but it makes a good FPV platform. I didn't use the FPV cover supplied but stuck the FPV camera ontop of the scale looking canopy so it looks over the nose. I've just got to optimise my antenna positions I was trying to avoid having my antennas hanging from the ends of wings which is usually the optimal position. I'm hand launching it which is a little tricky since its quite wide and I'm not using any under carriage. Interesting plane.

I think the lack of a suitable location to fly from is the issue here since the airfield Bruce uses is now closed to RC flying and the school yard is simply too small for a larger model.

tklplant Why are you considering the Go Discover if you already have the RV Jet? Finding somewhere to fly is an issue for me as well. There is plenty of open farm land where I am but farmers don't like people trespassing on their land and a lot of them my way are very antisocial to put it midly. There is a "nature reserve" near me but most of that has no public access. Flying in small parks around built up areas is asking for trouble I have done it. Parks are OK with multicopters as long as there arn't too many people around.

Sure hope its better than the original. it kinda sucks to watch 500 bucks fall out of the sky when your battery hits 3.8 v per cell, or watch your quad catch fire when you plug the battery in (bad solder joint on dist board). My qr x350, when it works, works well. After 3 sets of landing gear, 2 bodies, replacing the power dist board and flight controller, you'd think the thing should fly itself. Im looking forward to your flight test.

You are right on about everything. I was sold one for filming and was very disappointed. If you are looking to film with this don't. It is not a quality product. Nice toy but not a video tool.

Excellent well done review. We have two QR X350s. One flies well the other flies for a few minutes and then all of a sudden when trying to come down disconnects from the controller and pretty much goes in whatever direction it wants. Putting the throttle up does nothing to recover it and the other stick has no control. So far I've lost a gimbal and scratched my GoPro with this second unit. This quality control is a big disappointment.

Yes, if the controler is an APM-based system (as might be the case) then the flight characteristics ought to be much better than the original.

***** its basically an APM inside Bruce. we have confirm reports for it ;) that being said, the clear reasons why it falls from sky for no reason as its the characteristics of APM System :)

You can add the Minim OSD to the Devo-M controller ,Best to disable the Low voltage cut out via mission planner (save the DROP FROM THE SKY), Also unlock 6 flight modes via Mission Planner, By the way DO NOT UPDATE the firmware to 1.1, Its has bugs,

I was hearing you talk about the market it's intended to and i have to disagree, Bruce. Devices like these should, of course be available to everyone, but not everyone should be allowed to fly them. I've been watching a lot of videos of people flying carelessly all over. Usually hobbyists that belong or did belong to a club or institution, are more aware of the safety issues inherent to this activity. What's gonna happen, eventually, is that a group of grumpy old men, and believe me they are everywhere, will come out with some sort of law to prevent anyone from flying these anywhere. That's why i think that the selling of these models should be limited or at least regulated somehow. But then again that's just me... Love your videos / Best Regards.

Man, I don't think much of the quad itself, but damn they make funny faces when you open the battery hatch looking straight on... must be fun to put a new pack in them, it's like you're feeding it a lipo! [⁰□⁰]

Yes Bruce, it simply BLOWS MY MIND there is still total crap English in Asian manuals. It's something SO easily remedied by just as you said, find someone who knows English grammar, even if it's the janitor for God sake. But as to test flying it, I think you still have the mindset of an RC plane pilot, in that you don't need an airport, a flying field or a school with a multirotor, you can perfectly test it in your backyard.

Here's the kicker about that... I live within 4Km of the local airfield and therefore it is illegal (under the provisions of CAA 101) for me to fly this craft in my own back yard, since it is over 100g in weight. You might think "So what? Who's going to know?" Well if I put the video on KZbin, *everyone* is going to know and, trust me, there are small group of vitriolic folk who will run off to the authorities and lay a complaint. Given that CAA appear to be more interested in protecting the feelings of MFNZ's executive than in promoting safety -- you can bet your bottom dollar that a prosecution would follow. I'm 100% not kidding about this.

Well it seems that Walkera is yet another Chinese company that doesn't respect open source licences. That's no surprise. Even though the LiPo should have a high enough C rating, I expect it to have more internal resistance due to it's low C rating, which translates into voltage sag and therefore shorter flight time.

That's the risk when you open source a project but I agree it's less than ideal particularly since it would appear Walkera are trying to hide the origins of their design. It is also possible that the Walkera design is indeed original yet can still support Mission Planner. A bit like the original IBM PC ant the later clones. In any case I suspect 3DR will not be too worried since it looks like they are discouraging sales of thier own Ardupilot boards by making them so expensive compared to the new Pixhawk system.

Rob B I suspect the reason Walkera have not publicly acknowledged the x350 pro's mission planner compatibility is due to the fact that support, while existent, is flaky. People have bricked their machines by using mission planner's CLI, setup wizard or firmware updater.

It's beyond me that in China there are no perfectly bilingual (Chinese/English) people that could easily, cheaply and properly translate user instructions on products that cost more than $50.00. Especially when they sell thousands of them. I have a small company in Quebec and have in the past paid a perfectly bilingual (French/English) neighbor to translate our English user instructions for one of our products to proper French text and grammar. It's not at all expensive when you want to properly touch another language market. BTW Bruce... If you did not pick the product off the shelf yourself I wouldn't trust the originality of the quality of the product.

I simply call it like I see it. This *is* an improvement over the 350 but it still has a way to go before it's a polished retail product for those who seek a flying camera that can be pulled out of the box, charged and flown with minimum fuss or confusion.
