This is a teardown and description of what I found inside my beta-test version of the FrSky Horus RC transmitter. The production units will almost certainly differ from this to some degree.
Overall the quality was excellent but there were a few rather strange design choices made by FrSky in the development of this radio.

Thanks Bruce for another great review, as usual in this channel :) I've been using the Horus for about 4 months now and I can attest that is a very good radio. While OpenTx is a great radio firmware, it still needs to catch up to make use of all features available in the hardware (gps, bluetooth and radio sensors), but given the accelerated pace of development that's just a temporary aspect. If someone designs/produces/kits a charger board for LiPo/LiFePo, I would immediately buy it too! Cheers, -Sergio

The NiMh battery choice is 100% for shipping reasons. Some mail forwarders won't ship a wrist watch with a LiPo in it so a 2000 MaH battery would be like a barn door to their shipping plans.

Great video as you say though the production unit has new main board and at least two others. Also gps module seems different. The switch cover has been redesigned and the sticks are shorter. Also as mentioned below you can now use the internal and external aerials together. I have both the beta radio and the production version, the improvements are noticeable. Finally the software has come a long way since the early days and provides a fairly intuitive menu driven alternative for those who can't or don't want to tackle opentx. I am a fan of opentx have been using it since the Taranis first came out. Given that it has been under development for several years it is somewhat unfair to compare the relatively new FrSky operating system, especially if you have the original version shipped with the pre beta units you have. Beta testing identified a lot of the bugs and improvements needed and FrSky have continued to improve it. I really like my Horus it feels really grown up but I won't be selling my Taranis any time soon as Iuse it to fly helicopters and multirotors. Sorry about the long winded comment I really only wanted to say keep up the good work hopefully FrSky will start taking to you again soon and you can do a review of the production Horus.

One advantage of having multiple boards that you didn't mention, is that if one of the board fails they can replace just one, instead of the whole board. They went the same way with the X7.

also the bluetooth board is a ready to buy module. +1 for all boards - it would be great if one could design an internal lipo charger for the taranis (i personally like the nimh/eneloop option on mine but have friends that would love that)

The best thing about plastic posts would be the ease of repair using a variety of methods for example filling the hole with epoxy let it set and then drill a smaller hole than the screw to be used. Using a heat gun to carefully soften the plastic and slightly pinch the plastic smaller. Use a small piece of electrical wrapped tightly around screw once for a quick semi-permanent fix.

the good thing on linear hall sensors used in this gimbals is, they take 5V and output 0-5V which means you could replace the most other remotes gimbals with these if you can make them fit in it.

Regarding antennas, Frsky added diversity with a software update if you plug an external one in. So if you point the external antenna down (you can't point it up because if the screen), you get polarization this way. Also, I don't mind the NiMH battery. As far as my experience goes, it has enough juice to run the radio for my typical day of flying, and it retains charge even when it sits unused for a while. And I don't worry letting it charge overnight (like I would with a lipo).

The apparent lack of ESD precautions is a bit of a concern Bruce. It is an area that really needs respecting and perhaps consider an alternative pointer to a screwdriver! I know you may think it does not matter but as a 30+ years experienced licensed avionics engineer and designer I can testify for the damage static discharge can do. I have seen many very very expensive avionic LRUs ruined by poor ESD handling precautions. You don't want problems to manifest later down the line,watching your expensive model plunge down to the ground!

NiMh's are safer. They can take a lot of abuse, low discharge wont damage them easily and they work well in cold weather. Atleast in good quality cells the self discharge rate is much lower than with lipos. The self discharge rate is pretty amazing in something like Eneloops batteries. You can have them a few years on the shelf and still have around 80% charge left. NiMh technology is old, but they have kept improving it to this day.

Nothing wrong with Nickle metal hydride. Who in their right mind is going to be taking the back of the radio every time they want charge if they put in a LiPo???😄 I get loads of use from my Taranis on these batts. Just because Bruce says HE doesn't like them doesn't mean that there is any thing wrong with them.
@psydafke
@psydafke 7 жыл бұрын
johnnoble01 I agree there isn't a reason to replace it immediately after you buy it. I replaced the battery in my DX7s (wich supports LiPo in the software), but still use the factory-supplied one in the Taranis. Bruce suggested that FrSky or an after market supplier could sell another chargingboard/battery-kit, so you don't have to open it each time...

Smack on right. I've heard the same complaint about the Taranis, yet the two I use for work last 8+ hours on the stock battery, and higher capacity batteries can be built. I sympathize with those who really want the option, but the stock batteries are quality and work fine.

I know you're not a fan of Spektrum's 2.4 modulation. Let's put that aside as I've never had issues (And have with FrSky). My concern here is with servo draw. While I'm currently only flying 30%ers, I do plan to go bigger one day. I am also flying with WAY overkill servos as I hope to move them over to a bigger plane later on. I do want to switch to FrSky, but as far as I have seen they don't offer any high current options at all. The only reason I'd be switching over to FrSky is for reliabilty (I DO have a problem with Spektrums pots in the DX18 I fly with.) How would you go about running 10+ servos that draw nearing an amp each constant with peaks over 2A? Does FrSky plan to release a powersafe receiver soon? I am a fan of the KISS (Keep it simple and stupid) theory and don't want all the extra complexity and failure points of power boxes.
@ChaddRainsFPV
@ChaddRainsFPV 7 жыл бұрын
Weese - hey there - I would recommend using a separate SBEC. It's really common to find a reliable 5v 3 amp switching BEC for less than $10. As far as protocol goes- DSMX is honestly one of the better. ACCST (FrSky) is great as well. The difference is, many of the receivers from Spektrum are not very sensitive compared to the newer receivers that have come out from FrSky. I have modified a DX6 and gone out just over a mile (only higher gain antenna for the mod) - As for FrSky, I regularly go out a mile on a stock Taranis and still have >70% RSSI. I use an L9R and an OSD for even longer range. I trust my most expensive models to FrSky and always will. Stay safe Weese, hope I helped!
@katanamd
@katanamd 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! I'm not so much worried about regulators here as I'm running straight 2s 7.4 LiPo to HV servos. I'm worried about the power traces on the receiver. Spektrum makes power safe receivers that are meant to handle the high current needed for big models. I've seen normal "full sized" receivers burn through the power traces driving servos like that. Edit: I somehow replied to my own comment by accident. Durp.

2 Problems with this tear down, first is with the antenna you comment that it only has one at the top but this is not the case it actually has 2, the one at the top that you pointed out and also a second one in the left hand side of the radio ( right side in the video ) if you pause at 27:03 it can be clearly seen Second is the battery sure it is old tech but then so is the combustion engine that does not mean it is bad, the reason they most likely went with that type of batters is 1: Its does the job 2: It's a far more stable and trusted form of battery tech and is more shipper friendly

Have a look at the official website and you will find no mention of bluetooth in fact have a look at places that sell it and you will not find any mention of blue tooth and there is a reason ... that's right it does not have bluetooth. Hi. A shielded GPS? Ok, how many satellites could it pick up compared with another type at the same time? On the face of it, it's a very poor design. I doubt any GPS receiver works very well with a sheet of metal placed between it and the satellites. If it does, my undrrstanding of rf shielding shadow is in need of a rethink. If someone knows better (rather than just pontificating) do chip in. Bob UK.

Its a non-issue for GPS as much as i like this guys videos he often has no clue about electronics and makes assumptions, the reality is the orientation of the module is irreverent as is the metal plate as both will have next to no effect on the performance, The reality is this type of configuration has been use for many years now in phones, GPS devices like Garmin, Tomtom and they all have the screen a metal plate and then the GPS device and they all function perfectly fine
