Great tutorial. I read that WD External Hard Drives tend to have broken ports sometimes, AFTER I ordered one myself (only bought Seagate drives before, so I didn't about possible issues with WD's). At least, I'm prepared if that ever happens (hopefully never tho). The drive arrived today and it's working fine so far.

Thank you very much! My friend was so stupid and did backups on his usb HDD and after 2 years, he broke the usb connector.. If you guys have problems with detecting the hdd, then supply 3,2v on the second pin from the right side ( shown 1:18 ).. WD mounts some locking shit and unless you supply there 3,2v, the HDD won't power on.. I recommend using a resistor in this case because 3x AAA batteries will supply too much voltage

Did you solder a wire directly on the pin shown @ 1:18 or you found another point elsewhere on the logic board ?

It worked without removing the PCB and the broken USB! Just soldered straight onto the board. A bit sketchy, I guess, but the data has been recovered.

This is the only thing I hate about western digital external HDDs is that they don't have a sata connector unlike seagate.

0:01, I have same hdd. And i am not facing problem mentioned in the video. But my issue is that i have removed it from cover, and now I can't find any connector to connect 2.5 hdd to laptop or desktop? Kindly help please, i am from India. What is the solution to access hdd.

Data line tracks ripped up when removing connector. I think your two points are to the side that relies on those tracks and I cut the path. Oops.Can you suggest other points to connect to. Otherwise I'll cut the plastic away and trace around with magnifier.Edit: I think they go to a inductor resistor pack. I managed to backup drive but still issues with drive. Think broken joints ,cracks. Design is poor. Weak flimsy connection point.
