Wow, that's a lot of good bits for not a lot of money. Aluminum shock caps? centre diff? heat sink on motor? 4S capable? Check, check, check, and check. Yup, it covers all the bases. Now why can't certain other big name brands do all that for not a lot of money? Looking at YOU, Traxxas. I've never been much of one for rally cars, but this one might get me to change my mind. That's not a high entry cost, and you get a lot for your money. This is the way to garner interest in a specific class like this, make it not just inexpensive to get into, but make the experience rewarding so that people don't get frustrated and walk away from it early. I think this is a winner on both fronts. That car looks FUN. Really, it just needs an upgraded radio and receiver that include a gyro along with some kind of protective mesh around the chassis to keep debris out but let the ESC and motor breathe, and it really will have it all. That plastic cover you came up with is very clever and looks like it should work pretty well, too. It's amazing what you can come up with in a pinch just with stuff you've got laying around, eh? Another great video, mate. One again establishing your dominance as the best RC channel on the 'tubes. Keep it coming!

Usually, when manufacturers make it look like they are giving you value for money, what you are actually getting is something that despite ticking the boxes on paper, is actually poorly designed, full of design flaws and is poor quality. I've learned in this hobby, very few products are good value for money, it's just not a cheap hobby. My experience comes from owning Maverick, FTX, Corally and Arrma products, all brands that people rave about but the reality is very different.
@RCTNT5 ай бұрын
@klappars I gently disagree. I think the quality and design of models has been continuously improving, so now a cheaper model like this thing really delivers in most areas. Yes, it fills with grass and the radio might blow away in a stiff breeze, but overall it's amazing value. The Corally gears are stupid tough. Another example of improvements. Modern brushless systems can really punch and the gears in the corally models just take it. The performance of brushless models in particular is such that breakages are inevitable. The sheer power of these things is such that I'm constantly amazed they last as well as they do! There's always room for improvement, but I marvel regularly at just how much car you get for the money these days.

A quick tip for those of you who are maybe like me and like to keep your cars looking good.... I discovered not long ago that you can get BLACK masking tape (maybe known as decoraters tape in other countries). When ever I get a new car and am first exploring it's driving characteristics, often in the street outside my house, I'll spend 60 seconds protecting the edges of the body with some wide black masking tape. That way I'm not stressing about rolling it when I'm learning how hard it can corner at different speeds. Once I'm done, peel off the tape, and the body is still looking brand new.

interesting car, HPI makes some really random stuff these days. i'd say if you have a smooth pump track or mixed parking lot/gravel area this might be pretty fun but yeah the debris clogging the fans up and getting everywhere could brick this car pretty quickly. i'd maybe look into one of those nets that goes over the chassis they make for the Slash platform, but bigger. but yeah $300 is a freakin bargain, would be worth the RND to get it dialed in
@RCTNT9 ай бұрын
There's a mesh (Medium Plus) from Dusty Motors that fits. Buuuut it's like AUD$60. Others here have suggested wheel arches, which I could design to print. I'm not sure how well that'd hold up to stones - even the styrene shield I had here only lasted one battery pack before losing those wings. I'm actually thinking of making a 'lid' with vents that fits over the chassis, sitting just inside it, and clipping or sticking on with one of a few options. Once I have it worked out I'll share with the class!
@markcole64759 ай бұрын
I love your reviews , spot on and honest….no sponsoring to skew opinions and such! HPI has some pretty good RC rigs but some of their platforms appear to be copied designs compared to other popular rigs…granted this chassis reminds me of an Arrma line of bashers! I’d like to add its a reasonable price for what it is considering how expensive everything has gotten in the last few years…. Something to consider someday for sure.

Thanks. Some of my reviews are sponsored, but I'll always say when that's the case. That Hpi copies designs is news to me. Which models are like which others? Would love to know, seriously. But yes, for the money you can't really go wrong here. Cheers

@@RCTNT As I was thinking about the car and r/c rallying, it crossed my mind that the type of r/c rallying where you follow your car is a speeded up version of r/c crawling or trailing where you have following your crawler. Also, I have seen guys reinforce their car bodies with gorilla tape of some equivalent. I haven't tried it yet, but I think I will.
@RCTNT9 ай бұрын
@michaeldorich4485 it pretty much is like that, yes. I've got gorilla tape under my Kraton 6S and it's held up well. YES! FINALLY!! Craig trying RC rallying!! I´m all over the moon for this!! I loved the vid, mate. Great review! The car looks like a solid contender. I already had my eye on it, and at that price (Euro and UK prices are similar) it´s an absolute steal! I´m a bit of a snob, and can´t get beyond the unlicensed body. I like my rally cars to look like the real ones, so I´m on the fence with it. I would rather get HPI´s WR8, maybe in nitro form, to have a bit of a special occassion one, given it´s also a 1/7ish scale. Also on the bigger scale you´ve got the new CEN Racing Puma, which looks amazing, but in close inspection, might not be as well sorted for actual rallying, and maybe more for tarmac. I can understand why we´ve talked about rallying for so long before you went with it. But this seemed like a perfect initiation for you, with a bigger scale it can overcome your area´s shortcomings (taller, rougher terrain, especially on 10th scalers) for a rally machine. But what I want to ask, Craig is, are you smitten by the rally bug? will you be trying maybe Tamiya´s classic XV01, or the newer XV02 with the ability to fit a center diff, or will you try the LC Racing PTG2R that I always want you to give a shot at? If I was nearer you, I´d buy one PTG2R and give it to you myself for all the joy, great videos and reviews you´ve brought to the community. The comments speak for themselves👏👏👏
@RCTNT9 ай бұрын
Haha thanks Jorge. Look, I 'get' rallying, but without more appropriate terrain, it's not for me yet. If I had the means to make a smooth track with some jumps, berms, curves, some tarmac, and then could just run it from some convenient central vantage point, then yes, I'm all in. But for where I live, just like my faster road cars, it's just not going to be driven as much as it should be!

As I started cleaning it up I found out where the contractor dumped all the offcuts when they did the hardwood floors. What a freaking mess. I had to dig down a good 5" to get it all out, then went back into the woods and brought out 6 wheel barrows full of soil to fill it all back in. Tamp it down, throw down some grass seed and turned it back into a nice little spot again. @AllCoolThingsStoneMountain7 ай бұрын
This video is the one in about 5 or 6 I've seen of this RC that has convinced me that this is not a good RC for me. With as large and non-fitting that body is to the chassis, it created great gaps in it. It also is devoid of dust cover. Basically, those factors make it an outside debris vacuum cleaner. It also doesn't have any lights. If I get a rally RC, it will be much better fitted, protected, and hopefully lit...basically an MJX Hyper Go.
@RCTNT7 ай бұрын
Thanks, and I agree with you on all but the MJX Hyper Go. That is, if you're considering something as big as this car. I've got a review for the Hyper Go on my channel too, and it's great on asphalt. Gravel though? Not really. Suspension is not at all tuned for that, the car is very light and the wheels are relatively small compared to typical gravel areas. All up, the hyper go is brilliant on the hard stuff but will be frustrating on gravel - at least, in my opinion. There are other rally platforms to look at if this car isn't doing it for you. I'll summon @yoshimura53 to reply here (thanks!!) with one or two other cars to consider if the HPI here takes your fancy!

@RCTNT7 ай бұрын
Oh, sorry to hear it. Do you mean the drive shaft to the front has been popping out? If so, maybe a couple of o-rings on the center diff end of the dogbone shaft will help it stay in the front cup. Hope you get it sorted somehow anyway! The hair net approach is better than my solution, I think. Mine has been chipping from rocks and it still doesn't keep a lot of stuff out. A net is probably the way to go.
