As much money as Traxxas charges for their 10+ year old tech. They should ABSOLUTELY have a fan already installed. Honestly. Every high-speed rc vehicle should have both motor AND controller fans. They should also have better servo's. It is 2024. There is NO reason for a factory servo to only last 6 months to a year with regular use. That isn't just a Traxxas thing either.

So it's basically the same as the Slash VXL? It can't run 3s without being really hot and thermaling constantly until you add a fan. Even the Ultimate doesn't come with one.

Very true once you gear up the vxl 3s on any traxxas 4x4 they do tend to heat up quickly. At that point i change out the motor and esc system.

The biggest difference between you and Kev Talbot is that you actually say “What the heck are you doing Traxxas?” Instead of claiming everything they make is the best! Don’t get me wrong I like his channel but I believe it’s lost something over the years. Your channel however has gotten better while still staying true to the hobby and what should come in a $400+ vehicle! An updated transmitter (the 7000yr old line had me 😂), a metal servo and motor heat sink with fan! Also actually contacting Traxxas, like in your Bandit video, and questioning the gearing for the claimed MPH on their boxes! Hats off to you and cheers! You forgot servo and honestly updates to the VXL because it's outdated... Other 3s electronics perform so much better for a much lower price at this point. The thing is, the base of their cars aren't bad and i wouldn't mind this if they updated other aspects like you said. Other companies do the same thing and just have minor updates. But Traxxas charges massive amounts of money for the exact same crappy parts people have been begging for upgrades for years at this point. I love my 2WD slash and Maxx, but that's because they have everything upgraded besides the chassis lol.

@@TomleyRC Thats the thing though. Your planning upgrades to make a Traxxas work out of the box. I know most manufacturers have a really crappy servo (both Traxxas and Arrma are going to break straight away) but Traxxas your also likely to start upgrading parts to simply make it a functional product. Arrma does a bit better here, but they struggle with a heavy chassis and under powered electronics (except that 4s outcast, that things is nuts!)... So pretty much the same cost for either you invest in. I just wish they would stop upgrading cheap plastic manufacturer parts and invest in some solid changes for their customers. Now they have some serious competition nipping at their heals and we're starting to see them trying a little, but mostly just rebadging and not the important parts for a better product like other companies are... So we'll see what happens i guess :)

​@@taterbot2006 I agree, as a fan of Arrma vehicles. For example, their latest Kraton 6S EXB "Extreme Bash" is so fragile. Diff cups, drive shafts, arms, all pretty common weak points. Doesn't even take a hard bashing to break. Durability is superior in Traxxas vehicles generally. I had a Maxx 4S and that thing, while it had its issues, was near indestructable. I really dislike Traxxas as a company though, and I sold all my Traxxas vehicles except my XRT.

It's probably the best yet from Traxxas 🤣🤣🤣 yeah they love all the fancy Nancy writing on the packaging and all the hyped up commercialism. Advertising in other words . I'm actually surprised though that the car got up to within 1 mile of it's claimed top end. And the servo actually didn't fail during the filming of this video. This has got to be a first for Traxxas. Maybe they were listening to what everybody has been saying? I'm actually impressed though. It's got potential and let's face it, who doesn't modify their RC cars with aftermarket parts? The easiest way is to keep the Traxxas plugs but solder in a different servi to the plug lead unless you want to spend big dollars to just replace all the Traxxas electrics. Not bad though 👌

Great video as always. The VXL does run so hot on 3S. I have the Slash running on dirt and had to fit a fan and heat sink to keep it cool. I used a 3r party on for about $15 off Amazon. It’s solved all the heat issues, even with on of those mesh body protectors to keep the dirt out. I do want the Fiesta body, but will buy a clear one and create my own paint scheme.

As always a down to earth and honest review! We are waiting for two of those for a while now, there's a problem with older models containing asbestos so there's a import stop here. At least we have enough time to get the motor fans!

I bought a pair of these on release date earlier this year and love therm. Great parking lot bashers. I took one and put the XO1 6s Castle esc on a 25T pinion with a slipper eliminator and got 89 on 4s.

That's cool with just an ESC change! Did it run too hot? Could you make a few passes? Alot of guys have extra 4S ESC's that could do the same. (Like me) You just might have tipped the scale for me. I already have Traxxas TRX4 crawlers with a Bluetooth link remote. I can put the road car on that remote. Thanks for the info!

Might be useful to get hold of a FLIR set up for reporting on heat issues, they can be quite pricey but you might be able to pick up a second hand Cat or Blackview phone that has IR for a decent price (Probably other work phone makes that have models with infra red but those the two makes I've had phones from so i know they work)

I'll never pass up an opportunity to mention how my Slash Raptor 2wd broke a rear driveshaft on only it's SECOND lipo.!!! The "Extreme Heavy Duty" ones cost me £12 EACH.!!! That was £28 after P&P.!! Still, it's turned out to be one of my favorite RCs, I've had it for a couple of years, I've had all sorts of different bodies & motors in it.. It's proven to be actually very durable since it crapped the bed on its first day.!😉

Traxxas stuff is arguably more durable than an arrma. Traxxas chassis don't bend. And not to mention their parts are a hell of a lot cheaper than arrma. And, in all of my years of owning rc cars, I have never had a traxxas part break other than the body on an ancient rustler, which was inevitable.

I'm glad you found a Traxxas that you like ! I built up a Rally from the brushed version to VXL. I put cooling fans on the motor and ESC, I think I'm running a 15T pinion and it's been perfect.

The Maverick Quantum RX costs £224...keep that in mind.! 😉 😉 It's also got a Hobbywing max 10, 120 amp, 4S ESC, a 3674, 2200kv motor, runs mod 1 gearing, has a centre diff, has belted tyres that last for ages, will do almost 50 stock & 60 mph when you gear it up & stays nice & cool due to having a nice alloy heatsink.!! They drive fantastically, they're very durable & the bodies aren't as weak as some say. Mines around 8 months old, I've used it often, I've driven it hard, in all weather, on all surfaces & apart from needing the pillow ball hubs/knuckles/blocks? replaced due to being worn & a couple of small cracks in the body where the front wheel arches meet the body, it's still all original.!!! Amazingly enough I'M STILL ON THE ORIGINAL TYRES.!!! That's unheard of unless it's a crawler or an MT, I usually go through a set of tyres within a week or two, especially on road style tyres... I'm EXTREMELY impressed with them, so much so I've started using them on my other 1/8, 6S cars & they're doing a great job too.!! It also won't make you sick when you look at it.! 😉 😁 Like I say, keep that in mind when you're buying your next RC rally car.!

Good review . Heat is the Enemy in RC . Unless you're running nitro , LOL. These issues are not new from them , I remember having one of their ESCs blow up because I changed gearing 2 teeth once . Thankfully , but after much ado, they sent a replacement , with the stern warning to never change stock gearing .

Traxxas motors and esc's, for the price of them are not worth it. I've got several cars from Traxxas that had had issues with motors and esc's in the past and swapped them out for cheaper options from Banggood with better results than the more expensive one's. WIN WIN 😊😊😊😊😊

Did a whole lot of races of it VS the CEN Puma M and they are pretty close. The Snap-On versions body was SO much nicer. Wish they would have given it that body for the price.

Love the Traxxas Rally. Will be getting a couple of these with pro graphix body’s. Add this to my limited edition Valentino Rossi. I live around a 16T pinion but it’s the motor. I have 3 of the Vxl motors and all geared the same and 1 out of the 3 gets hot for some strange reason. I don’t think Traxxas would admit it’s a faulty motor but they do have a good warranty if you can identify the issue very quickly. I’m glad they revamped it. And I’m going to find out if I could fit XO-1 version 2 high velocity drive shafts on this Rally like I did for its previous versions. Because so far I’m unstoppable in the races against ARRMA road vehicles in the neighborhood races.😮

Traxxas seems to do that these days I bought a UDR back at launch when they were Hobby shops only and even though I LOVE IT TO DEATH the whole Drivetrain got HOT!!! Even when casually driving it! Only TURNING IT OFF COMPLETELY for 10-20min would cool it. The Motor, Driveshafts, Gear reduction, and the rear diffs were ALL getting uncomfortably HOT every run. So over the years I ended buying aluminum Rear diff, Center diff and front diff housing, aluminum Planetary gear housing and 3 fans, one mounts to the side of the motor one mounts to the back and the third mounts to a top deck where I cut a whole to feed fresh air to the motor cavity and now EVERY component stays and Skin temperature even after Three 6s 6000 mah Max Amps Packs back to back running at FULL throttle, If only Traxxas could get these things right they would be the best, I WANT to LOVE them but between the flaws their cars ALWAYS have out of the box and, them Indirectly causes the DEATH of my two other Favorite Cars the Axial Yeti and the Senton 6s BLX (both are now spend more time on the shelf than the road do to parts scarcity) It makes it REALLY hard to buy a Traxxas cars even though they can be SO MUCH FUN and their support of their older models is unmatched in the industry it just STINGS a bit too much sometimes

Good review Phil. Yeah that motor is a worry. I was wondering if that guard on the back of the motor was rubbing the driveshaft, but looking through the vid that doesn't seem to be the case. The driveshaft would likely have a wear mark if that does happen. I dunno, maybe check the driveline so see if it is moving freely.

So tell me why the 20 tooth metal idler gear that should be in all 2 wd transmission’s aren’t equipped as they should be. The nitro models seem to boast bigger teeth and have tons of power. yet the idler in them is still plastic. The Max short version never had any issues and they stopped it due to the whole bigger is better philosophy. The revo 1/16 diffs are advertised as tough but go drive one hard and see if they last a spell. Nope they won’t So many small things that could be easily fixed yet again Traxxas focus on the Ultimate X Maxx in 50 variations of colors and option parts. See their Trend it’s focusing on the big dogs and reviewers mainly with flashy bodies and that new dirt car. The hood Oh MY. It’s a floppy flapper lol I hate to be the one who brings to light things but if Traxxas didn’t keep on trying over and over and over to take all the cash of my credit card till it was depleted I would probably possibly have some good to say about them. But as it is sorry that’s not for me to say as they aren’t so good at a great many things that are easily remedied.

I don’t believe you can buy a motor fan from traxxas but you can aftermarket. I’ve had similar issues with the slash 4x4 vxl I used to have. That motor just gets hot. In the 2wd rigs it’s fine but in a 4x4 it’s too high kv. Someone needs to try the bl-2s motor on 3s. I think it’s a lower kv.

pls use a temp gun if you can, id love to know if the motors actually over heating or just hot, most people are gonna say 120F and higher is too hot to touch, and im sure you have a good idea with your fingers from running so many rc cars but i cannot feel your fingers lol

Traxxas came out with the BL2 Line because of ARRMA cars are stronger out the box, traxxas was giving people $400 cars with kite plastic axles lol

Axles are cheap and easily replaced. An Aarma chassis, however is not.

Traxxas. Was a fan. But they're over rated and extremely over priced. For example the new truck like the xmaxx is $2k here in australia. And using pot metal in the xmaxx diff and plastic gear servo, what the heck are they thinking. Ive sold all my cars and since i haven't looked back after 30 years in the hobby. Ita just not the same anymore.

The one thing Traxxas has going for it is their stuff is generally known for being super tough. My Xmaxx is absolutely tougher than any of my other RC's and the majority of my stuff is Aarma. As far as the heat there are aftermarket heat syncs that you can slap on the motor and I'd tighten the slipper a bit more as you increase the gear ratio...on top of installing a heat syncs, you can get one with a fan for less than. $10 on Amazon. I had the same issue with my Aarma Senton and Kraton out of the box when I geared them up

We install 1/8 4068-4074 can 6s motors in ours and run them on 4s. I have a 2300kv kyosho speedhouse motor in mine and it BARELY gets warm. Tighten slipper to the max. Change out the plastic bushing and motor mount. Youll be solid.

I did some research! Fans won’t do much for the system! The VXL-3s brushless power system comes with an ESC rated for 200A continous, and 320A peak current draw. Using a 3s/5000mah/25c LiPo battery will give you 125amp draw. Calculation: (5000x25)/1000=125 That’s the simple version. The motor is ONLY 3500kv, and is rated for 65A continuous, and 100A peak current. The ESC is fine as it can handle up to 200 amps. The problem is that the battery is giving the ESC 125amps, while outputting around 65-100amps into the motor itself. The rest of that power is lost as excess heat. The motor is pushing as hard as it can, and even faster than it should, because the battery can handle more than that motor. What i would do is find a comparable sized velineon motor(or other brand if none of the smart technology gets interrupted) with a higher kv rating. That could also be why the driveshaft area near the motor is so dang hot. I think the heat from the motor is escaping into that tiny closed off plastic gearbox with nowhere to escape, where the pinion gear spot has that tiny opening from inside the motor. Trade off to keep the components cleaner after a rally run i assume. I think this motor would be better suited in a beginner rc car with training mode forced. But holy moly I bought this Fiesta ST after i watched this video, and that thing burns up so fast- its unreal.

So ive been using the veleneon for a while now, it has a but of a break in period from what i see, when i got my slash 4x4 it would get hot hot for the first like 5 runs. Then i never had an issue with heat again

Who buys a vxl seriously? It’s been known for ages that the vxl 3500kv motor is inadequate for a 4wd vehicle on 3s. It’s better to buy the bl 2s, use or resell that system for like $40-50, and buy yourself a castle or hobbywing combo. Is it acceptable? No. But it shouldn’t be surprising. Other than the stampede because it has the bigger 540xl motor that won’t get as hot, just buy a bl 2s and upgrade yourself. You can get a 10bl120 g2 for $90. Or go even crazier and get a 8bl150 for $120

I do wish Traxxas stepped up their quality and overall value by adding at LEAST passive cooling solutions to their VXL lineup. Its really pathetic they leave that on the customer at their price point. I enjoy my Sledge, Maxx, And 4s Hoss but it really is disappointing that their competitor Armma included Massive color coordinated and good-looking aluminum heatsinks, and on the infraction 6/and typhon tlr 6s, both come with large powerful fans. The fact traxxas doesn’t recognize the value and quality improvement by including those upgrades stock, is rather pathetic!

I run a VXL motor with a Hobbywing 120 amp ESC on 4s. Figured if it would blow anyway it would on 4s. It's been going now a year strong on 4s topping out around 180dg on my laser temp bun after a full 6500mah pack. I honestly don't know why it hasn't melted down yet.

I wonder if the ESC is pulling too much current for the motor to get so hot , and it definitely wasn't hot weather when you ran it . The 14TH scale LC RACING EMB range of RC'S can do upto 50+ mph on 3S power and they don't suffer red hot temperatures , and their motors are only a small 2840 motor in the rally car and buggy , and a 2850 motor in the truggy , and their ESC's are only 35 amp and 3S capable 🤔 .

A Traxxas vehicle overheating because it doesn't have proper cooling. What? Jk not surprised. Traxxas make very well driving cars, and with their new heavy-duty components they're also very tough. But they do cut some corners and overcharged because they have the brand recognition. (like the Oakleys or Ray-Bans of the RC world)

Yeah you NEED to install heatsink and fans on traxxas vxl motors, they are insanely hot. I swapped my slash vxl to a hobbywing 3660 3150(ish, cant remember the kv) and its stone cold now, awesome hobbywing motors. ❤

Iike the look of it. I do like traxxas but they need to update their heat and power management system. No matter the ESC, brushed or brushless they don't like to run a batterie's full potential for long. Their motors do provide sufficient power though. I own two slash 4x4's and a slash 2x2. They are great cars. One slash 4x4 i have a castle sidwinder 8th currently running on 4s, that thing will run for a long time let tell ya. But im really not sure why traxxas hasn't updated the power systems, theres so much potential out there. And you could get a simple ESC for cheap that will run longer. Especially considering they came out with a 4s brushless system not too long ago.

Coolest running rc car Ive got is a slash 2wd with a kyosho brushless sytem from their 1:9 buggy. 2400kv. Its like a 42mm motorn I bröove. I run it on 2s and the top speed is quite low. 3s works greeat too. Low kv, low RPM and a large motor is a good starting ground for low temps.

Both my daily bashers have the VXL-3S. To run constantly on 3S and a bigger gear. Get both the ESC Fan and the Motor Fans. Definitely should be stock but we all know cheap traxsux, always about profits.

Sounds about right. I own a good amount of Traxxas vehicles and has the same overheating problem with everyone. I love the platform but the electronics are garbage. Always have to upgrade to a hobbywing or castle creations ESC and motor combo to be able to run it at the advertised speed without it getting hot with a little room to be able to make it go faster. And the stock servos…. Even worse, it’s not a matter of if they go out it’s a matter of when, but once you scrap out all the electronics the cars are solid, handle great and have good part support with pretty good durability. Just sucks that they don’t invest into better electronics stock. Have to pay $400-$500 US for a car/truck then another $250 for new motor and esc just to have it running as it should. If they aren’t going to upgrade their power systems then they should at least come with heatsinks and fans out the box. AT LEAST, but even then that won’t help very much

I was getting temps way past 160 degrees F on the stock motor after 1 or 2 3s speed pinion runs, added a fan and it’s definitely lower (under 140). Still get a lot of heat from the clutch tho, I feel like I have to stop mid pack and let it cool off. I like the way it drives, pretty stable, fun, but I feel like the esc/motor cooling are a let down, clutch as well. Time will tell on the plastic drive shafts and shocks, may upgrade those sooner than later… Kinda expected plastic servo gears at this price point from traxxas… when I hear good news, I wonder if a certain Romanian car is involved?

All traxxas is unacceptable, in my opinion. Plastic ,cheap rubbish you continuously have to wrench on , i mean, every time i take the xmaxx out it costs me xmaxx money , so it sits so i don't have to wrench. Thinking about the tekno mt410 2.0 its a 10th scale truck built with 1/8th scale parts , its a kit so not cheap, but it doesn't require repair after each use, unlike Traxxasss.

I don't know. I cant hate on Traxxas. They released which is in my opinion one of the best RC cars ever made. The Nitro Slayer Pro. And as far as their controller goes. Why fix what isn't broken. Traxxas fan through and through. They're one of the biggest companies to make RC available to everyone.

i have two vxl motors and they dont impress me. a $30-40 brushless motor on amazon is much more powerful than the vxl motor. atleast thats my experience, but that is with the vxl on the stock esc. i have not tried it on my hobbywing 10bl120g2 esc's that i absolutely love.

For 480€ you could at least expect a metal gear servo and a non overheating motor on a flat surface. What if you go offroad? It's a rally car, after all. Also hate the traxxas paint job it's always the same. With a licensed body, an actual Ford livery would've been nice. And being a Ford, you probably can't get the wheels off lol
