Like 13 years ago, I used an old ribbon from a souvenir lanyard my sister got me in Italy as snare straps when mine broke traveling. I figured it would hold me over for the trip, but then I never went back to anything else. I kept thinking I was some sort of genius for discovering the perfect snare strap. Turns out… I was! … but so were the other million drummers who also did the same thing. Hahaha.

By the way, if you're ever in a pinch and need to reattach your snare wires, especially if you're on tour and in a hotel room, remember that most sets of window blinds come with a few feet of free snare cord. If something breaks in the middle of a show and you don't have anything to replace it with, sometimes there are even blinds in one of the windows of the venue.

It's a well known fact that every dropped drum key you, uhh, well drop... teleports to David's "Beard Dimension" and never comes back. To stop that from happening, I surgically remove my left hand and replace it with a cybernetic drill with a permanent drum key bit. It's a "bit" of a commitment and having only one hand could be a challenge, but it's SO WORTH IT.

I play a Catalina Club with an 18" kick. The pedal has a riser on it with protective pads, and the hoop actually has another protector pad built in. Well done, Gretsch.

My all time favorite drum accessory is space. Actual free space in which to set up my kit. "Pro tip*" Fold the gros grain in half, then cut at an angle. Then (depending on which way you fold and cut it) you'll have a chevron, or a point end. Also a good idea to hit the cut ends with a lighter for a second to alleviate fraying ends. Hmm... Fraying Ends. That'd be a good band name.

I use a few inches of an old bicycle tire tube cut on one side so it wraps around the rim as a bass drum rim protector. Old bike tubes can come in handy for a million things. Loose mic clamps, protecting your stands from those clamp on accessories, just a few other examples.

#4 The "microphone boom arm with clamp" from gibraltar will do that for the $40 range. I got one, it's very solid and stable; there's no need to buy two separate $30+ things for that purpose. Another helpful piece of hardware is the "K&M 24035 Bass Drum Microphone Holder". It looks like it's supposed to clip onto the rim of the bass drum, but it falls right off when used that way; _however_ it will clamp quite securely to the flat part of the leg of a cymbal stand (or any stand with a base comprised of three legs with the two flat parts per leg, like a snare stand), and it should be possible to position the mic for the beater side of the bass drum in most setups.

Bass drum anchor is an essential piece of kit. A large contributing factor in bass drum "walk" that is often not considered, is running a single rack tom mounted off the bass drum, this will often cause the opposite leg to lift off the ground every time you thump the bass drum. Putting your tom on a snare stand or hanging it on a cymbal stand instead can vastly improve the "walk" factor.....

One of my favorite tricks is to use a normal multiclamp with a gooseneck for microphone placement. You can do something similar to what you did for your snare bottom mic; I also love it for bass drum microphones so you don't have to worry about a stand in front of your bass drum getting kicked by the guitarist or singer all the time.

Probably my best accessory was a set of - Pearl SBA-1/3 Snare Basket Adapter - I had a pretty decent Pearl snare stand but it wouldn't close down enough for my 12" (Sakae Pac-D) snare. I knew Pearl did the adapters but they were really hard to find probably now discontinued. I have since found a Yamaha snare that goes smaller (intended for a practice pad) but that is also lighter and less adjustable than the Pearl Stand.

I agree 100% with the mic stand real-estate around the kit, I use drum clamps with some 5/8" aluminum tubing and then just use a tap I have for fixing mic stands after ID10t's cross thread mic clips for under the snare, for the rest I've got some adapters meant for adding a lower mic to a stand to mic acoustic guitars and some lightweight booms. The adapters go on the cymbal stands, the booms can reach the Toms and Snare top easy. For over heads and room mics I have mic booms attached to the ceiling and use hooks along the route to have the cables on, all works well

The rubber strips used on top of metal garden edging are u-shaped with a channel that just happens to fit perfectly on a snare drum hoop and protect the rack tom from hoop rash. I prefer snare cord over ribbon because ribbon can cause unequal tension from one side of the snares to the other if the ribbon is not perfectly straight. Cord can slide through the holes and equalize the tension.

Personally I use automotive gasket material on my bass drum pedal. I like this because the other solutions I have seen will still mark up the hoop some, but this avoids any markings whatsoever. Also great for other parts of the kit, such as tom clamps that don't correctly tighten any longer (happens when you get a used kit).

You should be out on the road as a drum tech for some of the biggest bands/artists in the world. Seriously. You could have an incredible career doing that if you wanted it. Your technical prowess, ability to improvise/"jury-rig," your knowledge of tools, materials and places to access them, your knowledge of drums, cymbals and all manner of percussion related items, you have a workshop at home for projects in between tours. On top of all that, you have a great personality that would fit perfectly in the aforementioned role and not to mention, you could make a pretty awesome tour/travel vlog for your KZbin channel. Straight up, if I had a big time, money making band, I'd be offering you whatever it is the top dollar drum techs get to go out on the road.

Tip from the live audio world: the mic arm hack is pretty good, but a Shure A56D clamp is $35 and works great for bottom snare mics/under-hat mics. Bit bulky as snare/tom mic clips, but they'll do that too. Or just use a Triad-Orbit IO-C and be done with it :)

I carry a minimum of 2 drum keys with me to all percussion related events. One comes with me everywhere but another is usually in any stick bag or pedal case I travel with. So I’d say that’s my favorite accessory. I replaced all my wing nuts with quick release thingies but it doesn’t work for chinas. They’re too unbalanced and the thingy eventually works it way off. But all non chinas have one. Save tons of time.

What I never understood is why I never thought of (and why every brand doesn't do this) having a piece of webbing with a tension lock on it leading from the heel of the BD pedal to the center post of the throne instead of messing up my front rim with a cinder block or something. I might have one of those bass drum anchor things but at some point I switched to a rack and used an extra tom arm to clamp the BD to the rack and it never moved again.

YT seems to have randomly swallowed my post, so here it is again: The best thing I've found for preventing bass drum creep is KBrakes. I think it's a far more elegant solution than the bas drum anchor - install once and never think about it again. It also works better. (I don't work for them, I'm just a satisfied customer.) I was a little too late to the bass drum hoop protector game. Once I noticed it was scratched up, I tried the Gibraltar hoop protector. It's a rubber pad that sticks to the hoop. It sucks. The glue eventually stops sticking after a few months, and it only protects one side of the hoop. I have since switched to the Pearl one, and it's better, although it's not without its own issues: 1) it doesn't stay in place securely without screwing it into the hoop (not an issue if you don't have bass drum creep), and 2) its radius of curvature is ever-so-slightly small for a 22" bass drum, so I had to bend the corners up a little to keep them from scraping the hoop when installing.
