What condition was it in? Are the pickups fine? Are the tuning pegs gone? An 80$ Fender bass to me sounds like it's in very bad shape. 600$ seems like the lower standard price for a new fender bass. I find this quite hard to believe without details

This is one of my favorite videos because it really demonstrates extremely valuable advice for young musicians. You do not need to buy new!!! BUY USED!!! This is the best time to be buying used gear... the internet has made this task extremely easy. When I was a young musician starting out, gear was EXPENSIVE and sourcing decent used gear was very time consuming. I would strongly urge young buyers to focus on buying gear that is about 5 to 10 years old. This age range is new enough to have useful features and young enough not to show too many signs of abuse. Its also the age range when musicians start to think about upgrading and are willing to liquidate in order to finance their new purchases. You can get great gear like this.

Couldn't agree more. I've bought (and sold) so much used gear on Craigslist, is crazy. You get the very best deals on Craigslist because it's kind of the default "must get rid of stuff QUICK" place. Getting back into drums it took me about a year to purchase (in sections) a brand new kit, cymbal set, hardware and cases...Then I discovered Craigslist. I was finding used high-end gear in new (or near new) condition for like HALF PRICE!!. Now I get half my s*** through Craigslist. (GC used gear and Reverb also great sites!). If I showed you my entire kit, you'd be hard-pressed to tell which pieces I bought used and which I bought new. In fact, scratch that, you couldn't tell at all. If you can avoid it, DO NOT buy new... Find used stuff in excellent condition on those sites and save an ASS-TON of dough. Why buy a brand new 5-piece she'll pack for $1500 when you can buy a used (in new condition) kit, cymbals and hardware for roughly the same price?. Also, alot of people throw in cases for little or no more $$. Those sites are invaluable and an excellent resource to tap into. In retrospect, I would have bought everything used in the first place and saved at least 500 to $1000.

Where I live, the high school does a big garage sale weekend. At the end of that weekend, they start selling big brown paper bags for $1, and you can take anything that will fit in that bag. I ended up with a rack mixer made around the mid 80's, which I played around with for about a year or so then sold on ebay for $80.

One more thing I would add... if your dealing of Craigslist or Kijiji you need cash, a car and a cell phone or you can forget about finding deals. When I find someone is selling something good at a ridiculously low price, I usually offer 10-15% over the asking price to ensure that they will sell it to me (even if they have already committed to another buyer), this tactic will buy you time if you're not currently available to close the deal (if you're stuck at work/school,etc...). In my area, the other buyers are such cheapskates that they will still try to haggle a price that is already too low.... I've lost count of how many deals I've poached from another buyers by offering just a little extra cash on those already sweet deals... sellers aren't stupid, they ALWAYS go for the offer of more money, even if its just a few bucks.

Great info and vid. Thanks for posting. Like you, I keep tabs on CL and ebay. My best deal was on a mistake that Greenbrier Percussion made in an ebay ad. I happened to check at the exact right moment in time when they posted a brand new, in box, Gretsch Catalina Jazz 4 pc Copper sparkle kit for $349.00 with free freight. I nabbed that thing immediately! They said they had 10 available, so I checked back a half hour later thinking I just might buy another, since they sell all day long for $679.00. However, when I checked back they were on sale for $529.00 not the $349.00 I paid. I half expected to get a call from Greenbrier explaining their mistake and canceling the order. Instead the drums arrived just two days later and I've been enjoying them for several months now. Kudos to Greenbrier for honoring the order and providing great service.

As a young drummer in the 90s, I was lucky to have a local new/used/consignment shop nearby that had what I call a "drum hardware boneyard" in a back closet. I'd go in there and stick a Pearl middle tube into a Yamaha tripod with a Ludwig cymbal tilter on top, and they'd go, "Eh, ten bucks." Twenty-five years later, there are still hardware pieces from that room on my kit. If you can find a place like that, it's a goldmine. Pouring one out for Decade Music Exchange of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. God bless Glenn for all the years he kept broke musicians supplied with gear. I wish I could tell you to shop there today.

By far the best looking and sounding kit I've ever had, and it was a steal!

Yeah, now with the internet all’s you gotta do is google the brand and model, etc...and average like the first 3 prices, adjust a bit for condition maybe. Prior to the internet, it could go both ways though, pawn shop owners usually didn’t know much about musical instruments, so if you had a low end brand-name guitar, they would maybe pay a little bit more than they should, just because it’s in good condition and has a brand name like “Fender” or something on it, and maybe a nice finish to give it the “look” of a higher end guitar. And on the flip side, like you said, if you had an expensive lesser known brand guitar that’s not as flashy, they wouldn’t recognize it and only pay crap for it and not charge too much. Things like Eastwood guitars, and that list goes on, and on, and on, but I like Eastwood so I had to mention it

They had it posted on Craigslist for 400 dollars, I went down there to check it out and talked them down to $250 because it had some pickup noise and crackly tone knob. I sold the snare for $200, the China for $70, the cases for $40, the hi hat stand and cymbals for $50, the throne and snare stand each for $10, and one of the RIMS mounts for $20. Purchased a Yamaha flying dragon double base pedal for $60, talked down from $75. When I got there I noticed he had a tipped over pile of remnants from an electric drum set. When I asked him about it he said it was an old e-drum set that he was trying to get rid of. I ended up getting 3 pintech mesh drum pads (retail over $100 each) two electric cymbal pads, a couple rubber Roland pads, a janky drum rack (used for parts now), and a Roland TD-6 drum module for only $30!!! that and the double base pedal for $90, he also threw in a double ball jointed pdp tom mount and a single ball joint tom mount with a grommet to allow a boom arm to be attached for $10 making it an even $100. The double bass pedal was for my newly acquired electric drum set, and the module I got was an upgrade from my last, so you can probably tell I was pretty juiced.

It also came with a set of beverly hi hats and an 18 inch Paiste formula 602 crash.... which was unfortunately was cracked

The thing that sucks about guitar center is that they only give you 50% of what they buy it for
@rdavidr8 жыл бұрын
Thats not always true, they base their used prices off what they go for on ebay, but Im pretty sure they give you more than 50% or else no one would sell to them
@Barrett28FTW8 жыл бұрын
+rdavidr in that case. What do you thing I could get for a Meinl HCS series 14" inch crash. In pretty good condition. I need to get some money to replace a horribly cracked crash. And if I couldn't get much for it, do you have any tips for getting a little more life out of it?

Naaa. I sold an A series Ping Ride to GC for $80. It had a street value of $100-125. Just depends on who you get to appraise it and how bad they want it.

The best deal for me was when I found a used 19" Meinl Mb20 Heavy Crash through Guitar Center for only $150 ($340 New), not even kidding at all. They told me that they had some overstock so they needed to get rid of it quickly. Needless to say, the cymbal was in very good condition!

I know that Facebook Marketplace didn't exist when this video was created, but I've gotten several pretty good deals off of that site. I got a mint 1990s Yamaha studio custom kit for $300, and it came with 12, 13 & 16" toms. It also had all of the hardware and a Pearl piccolo snare. I kept the cymbal stands and sold off all of the other stuff that I didn't want on marketplace and Music Go Round. In the end... this kit cost me $150. I put new heads on it, and that was a small fortune. But in the end... I got a virtually brand new Studio Custom kit with the heads that I like (plus high quality cymbal stands) for $300.

Craigslist FTW! Guitar Center can be useful for "non typical" gear. Meinl, Paiste, Mapex, and Sonor stuff always seems generally under priced. I've got 3 really good deals: 1. My Mapex Mars Birch Fusion shells and hardware with Protection Racket cases for $350. Was a pawnshop ad on CL. 2. I got a 16" and an 18" Paiste Sig Mellow crashes for $120 together. 3. 21" Meinl Mb20 Heavy Crash for $140 on Guitar Center online used.

So, heres the scoop. When I was in the school band as a percussionist I was assembling a drumset similar to how you did with the something dollar drumset. So, I found hardware and a kit on craigslist and all i needed was cymbals and a snare. So, I had a talk with my band teacher and asked him if we had any spare cymbals he was willing to give away. He showed me a slightly cracked zildjian crash, a pair of hats by meinl that sounded decent with a slight crack aswell, and a ride with no brand. Whole pack was 25 bucks. ALWAYS ASK YOU BAND TEACHER FOR EQUIPMENT! Band teachers (especially non-drummers) really dont know the value of cracked cymbals.

My best resource for gear is my friends. I put a nut on a guitar for a friend and he gave me a squire strat neck which I put on an extra body. Then my other friend traded me a Gibson melody maker for the parts strat. I’ve also had friends find gear on the side of the road and in dumpsters and just give it to me. My sister found a Ibanez strat style guitar at the dump that worked perfect

Never seen a cheap kit until this week and it was not something I had the time to work on. $50 for a percussion plus on CL. I have seen free drums on my CL(Raleigh) once. Music Go Round is ok, but they buy low and sell too high sometimes. All your tips are on point.

my tip is to get to know the shop owner really well and then they will likely meet you with the deal i primarily trade for all of my equipment buy stuff really cheap and trade it off for euipment the most iv spent in the past year is about 30$ and a snare stand for two boom stands

I just found an 8x14 OCDP micro vent snare on craigs for $100. Came with die cast hoops which are $100/set AND an Evans hybrid batter head which is like $40. I swapped out the die cast hoops and heads and plan to sell if back on CL or reverb for what I paid.

Thank you so much, you've inspired me so much throughout all your videos! I can't wait to get some better hi hats after these tips! My best deal was my drum set which I got for $300 where it came with a Sabian AABright crash which is $220 by itself. Also another time I got a kinda crappy amp, a vintage dean markly amp, a mini fender squire strat (cranky but it was included) and then I got a multi guitar stand for only $135! Again thanks sm for your tips

It has a crash-ride, crash, splash, hihats, and China cymbal. It also has 3 rack toms, a floor tom, a base and a snare! Im so excited and i have had it for a few months now and i have played it so much.

my best deal on gear? hmm. it was my starter kit(s). i have a friend who played drums along with his 2 older brothers. they all had their own set, cymbals, stands, and other hardware. when he found out i wanted to start playing drums, he gathered all of their drums together (they had all stopped playing at that point) and sold it all to me. i ended up getting 3 quality kits 10 heavy-duty stands, and the cymbals to match for $225.

Well, today a customer came to clear out her totaled Jeep, mentioning that the stuff in the back was trash. I snagged a Zoom 505 guitar pedal that "didn't work" and when I got home I tried it out with a proper power source and now have another nifty toy that should eat up a good portion of my weekend. Sorry it's not drum stuff, but hella good deal, especially since I didn't have to rob the power source from anything else :)
