They aren’t balanced at all. The show used internal logic to make them seem balanced but the truth is the air nation is the strongest out of them and could easily resolve the conflict by themselves. Something as simple as a deadly virus spread into the battlefield or using air to send dust into fire nation troop eyes perpetually. Rendering the troop eyes useless while hardening air around their own eyes. It doesn’t matter how good any bending is if you can’t hit the enemy. There are exceptions I’m sure some high officers can fight through this but the majority of troops would get taken out. oh and Toph.

Don’t forget, the reason Aang got his master tattoos was from his creation of the Air Scooter - as the requirements were either create a new bending technique OR mastered all 36 levels of air ending. He made the Air Scooter technique and got his arrows. Granted, he is still a prodigy, as he had mastered 35 of the levels by age 12, but the scooter alone is all he really would’ve needed. Also, as far as we know, every adult Air Nomad was a bending master - because every single one of them in the show had the arrows. Unless there was one that was never mentioned or shown that we don’t know about. Meaning they should all be able to fight a similar style to Aang in season 1 and would’ve given any nation problems in a straight up fight (not no sneak shit w/ a comet like the Fire Nation did)

Easily the water nation for several reasons but I'll give you three. One the water nation is divided with the north and south, and both sides throughout the show were either unable or unwilling to help. Two didn't the fire nation capture and kill almost all the southern water benders, sure it took a couple times but they did it, and this was without the power of the comet. They almost got done like the air nation. Finally, that nation is so worried about customs, that they gate keep most their most powerful techniques.

water nation may be the weakest but purely bending wise, I gotta say fire bending is objectively the worst bending style. It has the weakest irl versatilely and usage Edit: I didn't say fire bending has zero versatility in real life, just the least of the four. Sure, you can sear wounds, but most people would literally never have to do that in their lives, nor do most people know how to do so properly. Flight is possible, but an incredibly hard thing to do. Your average firebender won't be able to fly. Korra was able to do it in the Avatar State, Azula was a prodigy (and most of her flight moments were just fire-enhanced jumps), and everyone else like Jong Jong flew during Sozin's comet iirc. You'd be able to boil water or create light sources, but not much else besides that. There are just way more perks with the other bending styles.

Water nation: The weakest. This is due to their nation being underdeveloped, they are not technologically advanced, and the military is fodder compared to earth and fire. They're also not trained to kill compared to earth and fire nation. Water benders are usually easy to read as they have to control a big string of water in order to be effective. Air Nation: 2nd weakest. Ngl, due to them being pacifists, they probably aren't experienced in wars. Air Nation has the most potential, but they have no military or bloodlust. Air benders are extremely agile and evasive but lack combat and aggression. If they put their mind to it, they could easily be the strongest. Earth Nation: 3rd Weakest. Military is extremely solid. Earth bending has the best defensive capabilities and utility. Also, the ability to manipulate the terrain is extremely impactful. The Earth nation also has the Dai Li trained assasins. The Fire Nation struggled to take down the Earth nation because they were well developed. Fire Nation: The strongest. The Fire nation is supported by the story to be the strongest. Fire benders also have the best offensive capabilities, and they can produce fire at a quick rate. Also, the most industrialized and military smart. Keep in mind that all the nations are supposed to be balanced, so in reality, it could go either way. Water < Air < Earth < Fire

for me Strongest would be: 1. Fire Nation = they militarized their bending so they got the most manpower with destructive bendings. 2. If we’re talking everybody is at their peak so: earthbending at their peak has lava, mud, metal and sand bending. This arguably could be the most unstoppable category. Defensewise it tops the list. If we’re being technical Metal bending is a great counter to lightning which they can redirect if they are around it. The iq of earth benders are also at the top of the list. Mud bending can be used if they are in a rainstorm and not enough solid earth is around them. Air bending seems to be the simplest of the bunch but also very slept on. Air benders can fly and are the most agile and fast of the benders. They are also very calm and relaxed ppl even in combat due to their monk lifestyle. They trained every single day at laser focus more than any other nation. They can also take the breath out of anyone’s lungs which almost cannot be prevented unless you are able to one shot them or take control of them aka with blood bending. If we’re also being technical here too they can change air currents (granted they’re strong enough) and change the weather which could greatly affect water and fire benders by either creating storms by changing fronts and making it hard for fire benders OR making it extremely hot and harder for water benders. Water bending is a slept on group as well. Water benders at full peak potential can take water from anything that holds moisture whether it be the dew on grass, water in plants, sweat, rain, etc. not only this but they can create ice with this water in an instant. Water benders are also great healers as well. Now water benders having blood bending is probably the most op ability next to pulling air from someone’s lungs but the difference is though someone may lose their breath due to the loss of air they could still get off moves before they finally collapse depending on the situation, blood bending is completely immobilizing preventing any control of one’s body unless they go into an avatar state which only avatars can do. They would be able to stop any and everybody at will with this. The also can seemingly drown most opponents as well. Fire benders are probably the most ferocious of the 4. Based on pure power they probably have the best offense. Their lightning bending is powerful and extremely fast probably the fastest ability in the show and extremely hard to counter. Though in terms of defense fire benders are either second to worst or the worst of the 4. Fire benders can also learn the combustion technique which would be able to dismantle pretty much all other bending techniques with the sonic explosion. Firebenders biggest weakness is water. Overall it’s extremely close and super balanced, but fire is probably the weakest of the 4 but not by much at all just barely. I consider earth and water the strongest due to the amount of hax they have at full peak form. Air doesn’t match up too well with earth and earth is just overall better rounded so I can’t put air above earth. Bloodbending being the most broken ability puts water at the top. Fire bending nation often overpowered the others bc of 1 sozans comet, 2 they had far better numbers, and 3 the other nations had some mental block (water preventing women from truly being skillful in water bending dwindling their numbers, air them being monks and avoiding combat, and earth being the second strongest nation and most targeted due to the air nation being eliminated and water benders being too stingy to send help due to their numbers being low). Does it mean they’re weak? Hell no but they just don’t have the hax or enough counters for each other nation.

I would swap Earth Kingdom and Water Tribe. They share similar issues imo that being they’re too segregated to form a truly powerful and devastating army but at least the Northern Water Tribe held its own and continued to do so while the Earth Kingdom in spite of being the largest was always segregated and bust doing their own nonsense. Their strongest state was Ba Sing Se and they actively ignored the war due to corrupt politicians and they soon fell to the Fire Nation. Their second strongest stare was Omashu and that was taken over. Yea Bumi gave it up but he had no choice but to wait for the eclipse. There was that one town who was too busy being salty at Kyoshi. Kyoshi Island was nearly burned down by Zuko of all people. The Kyoshi Warriors got washed by Team Azula. Multiple poor, run down, or outright burned and abandoned towns and villages all throughout. Several Fire Nation Colonies. The city Toph is from at the very least faired well I guess. An Earth Kingdom that could fully unite as one like the Fire Nation I believe would be the most devastating force(until they gotta go to the Poles). But as they are they just can’t be even the second strongest nation.

All airbenders were born benders because of the spiritually in their culture. However the smallest population. Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation all have small bender populations in comparison to nonbenders but Earth Kingdom having the largest pop in the world also has (in percentage) the smallest amount of their benders. This was canon material from ATLA magazine material back in the early 2000s. That said, Waterbending is the "weakest" to me because of its source needing to be around. Honestly it’s gotta be fire. Utility wise, bending wise it’s just fire and lightning. You can kinda fly with it like a jetpack but ehh. All the other moves can stop your flow or control your limbs. You can legit make metal walls and expand them out so no fire or lightning or air or water ever hits you. You lava bend, you can control their body to shut down their bending as well. We’re made of minerals so you can technically mineral bend a human and even control their limbs with the metal braces. Imagine taking all the iron & minerals out of a human body! Talk about iron deficiency. Immune system would shut down. You can build the tightest walls and most compact objects so the density alone is insane. A somewhat strong earth bending is neutering a somewhat strong water and fire bender. The ability to make mistakes against earth is nonexistent. You can’t get hit. They have the best defense. Don’t forget they can reinforce themselves with the aang earth armor around him. Earth doesn’t mean rock. It means soil, grass etcc. So you’d be good at neutralizing fires. And in mud you can still move the earth so you can psuedo water bending with that or lava. Water you have blood bending ice, and water the strongest force in this earth. Water at a concentrated PSI can literally cut through everything on this earth. The whole black community saved. You never gonna drown you can freeze for stronger blocking. You can even pull water out of the air, not just flowers or trees. Water can heal people too Air accessibility it’s never weak. You can fly, you’re the most mobile. You can take the air out of any benders lungs. Tornadoes. You can legit repel anything that’s thrown at you like a forcefield with enough wind pressure. Air definitely not the weakest. Your attack counters pretty much every other bending in the series.

Their opponents were focused on knocking her off(to win the match). But, using footwork, she was able to dodge their attacks, long enough for Mako and Bolin to take them out...She soloed nothing; in fact she was just a decoy.. ALSO none of the other benders were taught by an Airbending master(or any master for that matter). Therefore Korra was the only person familiar with the footwork..

Canon states that the Air Nomads had no formal military they were monks. Just look at how hard it was for Aang to take Ozai's life. They're automatically at the bottom. The Fire Nation rolled over Omashu, and they took Ba Sing Se. They destroyed all the Water Tribes except the North, which they would've done had it not been for an insane water spirit. Fire nation is #1. Now, the Earth Kingdom clearly trumps water, longest standing unseized stronghold in the show. How many waterbending masters are there, 2 or 3? Lava bending was a mix of fire and rock bending so u couldn’t really put that as just a 2nd fire nation ability. And they hoed Leland when he brought up the point about water benders needing something around them to bend. While yea water is everywhere, only really gifted water bender we’re doing that in the series so Leland had a good point. Plus in an area with no humidity it’s over for a water bender

1-Earth 2-Fire 3-Air 4-Water Earth is ridiculous, you have your resource literally everywhere, and lava and steel bending are scary. Ba sing se is also ridiculous, and earth kingdom cities defy physics due to their bending. Fire is extremely technologically advanced compared to the other tribes. Didn’t win the war because they were fighting in multiple fronts. Can create fire from nowhere, and that’s OP. Air nomads were not warlike and peaceful, and as a nation pretty weak as they had 4 small settlements. Only above water because air bending is OP, and the strongest bending. Water nation wasn’t even trying, people living in huts, hunting for a living, super underdeveloped. Northern water tribe is a bit better, but still. Fire nation was pulling up with war-ships and they were using spears 💀

Fire nation is the weakest it’s weird cause it’s hard to say it but they intentionally assassinated the air nation at night while the avatar was gone because they were the biggest threat, then went on to infiltrate earth and water but it was stated that earth held back the longest and water essentially played dead. And in the end one guy ran all of em from the air nation and remember most avatars were born to the air nation. Not to mention fire attacked the ways they did because they have the most weaknesses so they NEEDED to army up and play military while everyone else didn’t have soldiers until after the war against the fire nation began so they really was so weak they had to backdoor the world and still lost in the end.

The argument was never about bending. In terms of bending air bending for combat is top 2. A nation is more than its benders, other nations have militaries that include non benders as well. You can’t take the feats of one bender and apply that to all benders of the same element, that’s like looking at Toph or Ozai and saying all benders are on that level. Bending is martial arts. Monk gyatso was considered the greatest airbender at the time as stated by aang. Dude was best friends with avatar Roku. He is the exception not the rule. When you look bending specifically air is not the weakest but as a nation they definitely are. They aren’t called the “air nation” they are air nomads.

Alright, I think I’ve got a solid answer. If the prompt is “during ATLA, rank nations by strength” then the order obviously goes air weakest, then water, then earth, then fire. If the question is “what nation has the most powerful bending style?” Then the order goes water strongest, then air, then earth, then fire. Finally, if the question is “during ATLA, what nation has the most skilled benders?” Then the order would be Air, Fire, Water, Earth. I think that about does it.

Clearly Krillin isn’t strong enough to go Ultra Instinct as he’s one of the weakest Z fighters and overall weakest characters in Dragon Ball lol. And obviously Katara can’t air bend since 1.) she isn’t the avatar, and 2.) she’s a water bender, and since she isn’t the avatar she can only bend water. So my point is, at some point we have to use our own logic and think critically when it comes to this stuff. Aang is the strongest air bender at the time he was coming up, and taking the air out of someone’s lungs would be relatively easy for someone of his skill. He only doesn’t do it because he doesn’t kill and isn’t ruthless. But it doesn’t take a genius level intellect or for them to show us for us to figure that he can most likely take the air out of someone’s lungs. I don’t need to be spoon fed information to be able to draw my own conclusions. It’s called critical thinking.

I think geographically, water nation may be the most vulnerable. When your two mainland are placed at both ends of the world, communication and cooperation is practically lost. In ATLA, southern water tribe doesn't even feel like a nation and they were constantly being attacked by the fire nation and the northern water tribe did not or was not able to provide help to their sister tribe. Maybe you can argue that maybe the air nation too has a similar vulnerable state plus they do not have a formal military, but at least they may still have a chance for coordination since they are relatively not that distant to each other.
