Oprah is so oblivious to the seriousness of drug addiction, she's trying to get crazy stories out of him instead of letting him explain the deep trouble/pain it causes.

2:54 "Yeah, a lot of people went to great lengths to--" "Do you remember the craziest, you must have had some crazy times!" Not that I'm not interested in the crazy times, but I wish RDJ had been able to finish, because for a moment he was getting serious and paying tribute to the friends who kept trying to help him. Not hating on Oprah, though! She got RDJ to sit on her couch and talk all about the drugs (albeit, passing it all off as a joke.) Contrast that passive-aggressive interviewer in 2016 who asked jerk questions till RDJ calmly got up and walked out...
@coena93775 жыл бұрын
I feel like the difference between the jerk he walked out on in 2016 and Oprah is the context. The context of this conversation was that he went there to talk about his addiction. The context of his conversation with the jerk is he went there to promote a movie. It just wasn't appropriate for that other guy to veer the conversation into Robert's past as he gave clear indications he wasn't comfortable with it. If someone comes on your show to talk about their past and their struggles with addiction, you get to ask about those things. If they're on your show to promote a movie, you ask them about the fucking movie.

@gooddoggy66316 жыл бұрын
Is it just me, or is Oprah interrupting him any time he tries to get serious? It seems like when he tries to speak about the consequences of his behavior and how others tried to help him, she just asks for more crazy stories. Idk, maybe it's just me, but I feel like that's really rude and problematic of her if she is doing that.
@Fyrtenheimer4 жыл бұрын
It's absolutely something she does til this day. The interview is about her. She interrupts so much.
@biscuitspickles91493 жыл бұрын
Downey was patient with her but the severity of what he was talking about, she has no clue. I think he is still a scrapper, as famous as he is, with a wonderful spirit, and intellect, and it makes sense to me that he also went into martial arts. It is an awesome outlet that can help on so many levels. He really IS Ironman, nobody else can play that role. His wife Susan is incredible, and it is so cool these two are still crazy in love after 15 years or so. How cool is she though? She just seems very no nonsense but fun. These two are soulmates definitely examples of relationship goals.😎

This interview is painful to watch. RDJ is using humour as a coping mechanism and for deflection purposes but really, nothing he's saying in this interview is even remotely funny. I lived with an addict for close to two decades and trust me, there is absolutely *nothing* funny about addiction. I feel sorry that he was put in this situation (Oprah show) as a form of "career damage control". RDJ doesn't owe us (the public) any apologies or explanations. He owes his family & friends and all of the people he hurt while he was under the influence these things but definitely not us. Iron Man success aside, it's amazing how far RDJ has come in the last 20yrs and he should be damn proud of his success. The thing most people don't realize is that RDJ will *always* be an addict. Don't let the Iron Man enigma or his billion dollar fortune fool you. This is a man who has addiction hardwired in his DNA and for the rest of his life he will need to do the necessary work in order to keep his hard won sobriety in check. That said, I fully believe he can continue to maintain his sobriety as long as he remains honest with himself and maintains a tight support system of family & friends to help him along the way.
