And I can't understand why! Because this is good competition at a different price point, will offer alternatives to overpriced green team. It's like people wanted so much that AMD would "beat" Nvidia that they're disappointed and blame AMD for their self hyping. As a sff owner, I could fit a xtx in my rig, not have to change PSU, case, anything, and benefit immediately. I can't do that with Nvidia. Huge value for me. It's a plug and play replacement instead of having to rebuild everything around the new GPU. Really can't understand the fuss.

My last AMD GPU was a MSI HD 7950, I had to switch to an MSI 980 ti because crypto miners had bought up all the new AMD cards. I then bought a MSI 1070, which was not a good choice as it had the same performance as the 980 ti, then during the pandemic I was able to get a Zotac 3070 and was really happy with it, but a couple months later I got the opportunity to purchase the Zotac 3080 ti, it's been a great card but it is a lot louder and hotter, I GAVE the 3070 and an older system I had to a friend that couldn't afford a system at the time. I could have sold just the 3070 for over $1000 at time of the pandemic. I would have bought a RTX 4090 FE but they sold out and have been out of stock ever since. I think I'm going to give the 7900xtx a shot this time around. Oh I forgot to mention that both Zotac cards were bought directly from Zotac, not disgusting scalpers, I will NEVER buy from scalpers.

@@Magjee In the end AMD is a "boring execution machine" in that they want to sell chips, not boards as chips are where the margins are. AMD I think is clearly willing to bin the best chips for partners to make margin because by selling the lower bin chips themselves they are still making money and it's not about the ego of "best flagship" in referfence design like NVIDIA. Winning a war is not about victory all the time, it's about choosing and winning the right vicories. Time and time again the best tech companies have lost to rivals with all around better execution. Drifting from what customers want to empower new markets has helped NVIDIA massively but... there is a break point there. Ray tracing and higher costs are features abliet negative ones for average markets not the professional high end ones, add design flaws and now is an aweful time for NV to srew up.

This is what I think might be happening here, that AMD had a chance to not push their chips in their reference cards giving AIBs a chance to offer something that gives a good bump in power. Still it in impressive that this 7900XTX will be getting near 4090 performance as a starting point with some 3GHz AIB cards as stated using 3 8 pin connectors pushing power up to over 400 watts.

Hey Jim, great video as always. While I do agree with you that the 7950 XT(X) is likely incoming, I doubt it would be a larger die. What I think it would be (at best) is a 7900 XTX with a stacked cache and higher clock speeds (but not by much, most likely 2.5GHz for shaders, and 2.6-2.7GHz for front end, offering 15% or something performance uplift. Effectively beating 4090 in raster performance, but losing to a hypothetical 4090Ti. As for the leak confirming that RDNA 3 silicon was designed to hit 3GHz and up, I think that we'll see clock speeds closer to 3GHz only with some AIB cards and only with Navi 32 or 33, but no Navi 31 (due to sheer number of transistors and complexity).

Finally the man has made his appearance. I've been interested in our Scot's assessment compared to Coreteks disappointment. In my own opinion I do believe it will be not as powerful as the 4090 so really depends on how much you want to spend. This is obviously based on the standard AMD cards. But I do believe they are holding something back and expect something more powerful next year. IMO Coreteks deserved the roasting he got over his highly critical video of RDNA 3. It was poorly considered and completely off the mark in more than one way. He's not considering that the XTX is not a 4090 competitor or considering other issues such as pricing, energy use, and market placement, and has doubled down on his highly critical view by posting a very long pinned response to all the criticism and dislikes he's been getting from his own fans. Edit: the other thing Coreteks seems to have missed, is that unlike Nvidia, AMD continues to rely on 3rd party card makers (AIBs) to sell the majority of their GPUs. AMD had released reference cards that is not intended to compete with AIBs, but Coreteks seems to have forgtten this. For certain, we'll see 3rd party cards with higher clock speeds that push performance further up.

We shouldn't forget that NVidia had the benefit of jumping two full process nodes in a single generation, I'd be shocked if the perf boost was NOT dramatic. But next time, it's not likely that they will benefit even from a single full node; this stuff is now moving slower in particular if you consider price - going forward, each new bleeding-edge node is significantly more expensive than the previous one (Huang himself made that point, saying "moore's law is dead", in a recent interview to justify their prices). Ada, even at MSRP, is already stretching what NVidia fans are willing to pay in a down market without the excuses of peak pandemic and supply crisis. NVidia also doesn't have space to grow in TDP. The rumor of 600W or more was just a rumor this time, but next generation they'll need to go there even with a half-node bump. What's next, a 5-slot GPU requiring integrated high-end liquid cooling / $2K MSRP and even higher AIB street prices? And I'm not even talking the halo SKU, that's where they might land with the 5080 or certainly the 5080ti.

"What's next, a 5-slot GPU requiring integrated high-end liquid cooling" While it's fun to poke at Nvidia, let's at least be realistic; any card with water cooling is not going to be absurdly massive. I don't think a lot of people realise that the 4080 16GB is a lot weaker than the 4090, like not much faster than the 3090Ti, this is based off Nvidias own figures which literally show only about 10% difference in a "plagues tale". Even their RT examples show only about a 20% improvement. so the 7900xtx will be up to like 40% faster than a 4080 in raster and about 20% weaker in RT. This will be basically be the same situation down the stack below the 4080, unless Nvidia does some big changes in pricing.

Hi AdoredTv, good to see you back. But I have to disagree with your 24k shader GCD analysis. This one might be saved for RDNA4. Instead i believe AMD have a 15k shader setup on hand for the theoretical 7990xtx because last year there is a rumor that AMD were testing this configuration before it is died down and replaced with the current 12k shader GCD setup. This will be possible if AMD use 2x Navi32 GCD in one package. Hell they can even retain 6 MCD in this setup if AMD use 24 Gbps GDDR6 memory announced recently by Samsung. How about that ?

AMD is listing specs at 6144 Shaders, so I REALLY want to know how this whole "Dual Issue SIMD" works. Because if the Shaders were normal, 6144 SP at 2.5 GHZ = ~30.6 TFLOPs. I really want to dig into the meat of this new architecture. It would also seem they have a PROPER RT core now, as well as AI Accelerators like Nvidia.
@dex6316
@dex6316 Жыл бұрын
It comes down to shared resources, and AMD website designers either not understanding the architecture or AMD wanting to win with a smaller number. It has 12288 shaders based on the definition of shaders since unified shaders were a thing. Half of the shaders are fed with a Thread Level Parallelism (TLP) approach. This means spamming threads at the shaders until they are well utilized. Some threads are complex and could use more resources. With these threads an Instruction Level Parallelism (ILP) approach is taken to fill the other half of shaders. ILP breaks down the thread into the instructions generating “mini-threads” (instructions hence the name) to fill the execution block. Fermi below the flagships GPUs and Kepler from Nvidia used an ILP approach to feed 1/3 of their shaders. These GPUs were well utilized. AMD with VLIW5 (HD 3000-5000 and some 6000/7000) would use ILP across 5 shaders getting an average utilization of 3.4. AMD likely saw Nvidia getting a lot of crap for doubling shaders in Ampere and getting nowhere near that performance increase. This could explain why the engineers cut the shaders in half if the website is intentionally mislabeled.
@Dysphoricsmile
@Dysphoricsmile Жыл бұрын
@@dex6316 I get what you're saying, but AMD's slides even showed 64 "Dual Issue SIMD" per CU - which again, would add up to 6144. AMD's website still has 6144 Sp with 384 TMU listed, same with Techpowerup. IF AMD had doubled the shader count equal to the TMU count, it would have been 768 TMU. AMD mentions "Dual Issue SIMD" many times - all of this adds up to 6144 being the actual number, but they seem capable of 2x throughput per clock in some manner that has yet to be understood. Also, to go from 5120 Sp to 12,288 Sp with ONLY a ~1.6x improvement overall and ~1.5x in RT, well then that means RT perf is not even equal to the number of (legacy) CUs the 7900 XTX has increased from the 6950 XT. (But the perf per watt increase is still insane regardless) At 96 full "legacy" CU the RT uplift is much more impressive. Regardless, lots of very interesting details for any true tech nerd. Could be you are right, and I am wrong. But either way, I want to know how they got those gains in FP32 and more. I still NEED to know what AMD means by "Dual Issue SIMD" but it really seems to point to 6144 shaders at 2x clock frequency.

Love the analysis! I definitely enjoyed hearing this point of view! Now... what happens when AMD figures out how to properly couple GCDs? LOL. Still, if you're right and they have a 500mm GCD in the works, that would be awesome. Not the kind of card I'd want to put down money for, but totally would be one of those moments when I'd have to wonder if Jensen's desk will end up with a dent from where he bangs his head against it in frustration. Nvidia isn't going to be able to conjure an MCM system in another generation or two even if they have been working on it for a while. I was also curious if AMD looked at the latency and decided to try to up the speed of the interposer and MCDs at the cost of the shader clocks? Don't know if something like that would even be possible - but it seems that if they'd have some issues with bottlenecks due to interchip latency you'd want to be able to put more power to that if you could. Keep the front-end at 2.5ghz, but then 2.3 for the shaders... and maybe overdrive the interposer and MCDs a bit to try to cut down on latency? Especially since this is going to be the first GPU we're seeing with a MCM design, I can imagine there's some bugs that need to be worked out on the driver side. So why not release the card as a 4080 competitor and then laugh as the bugs get worked out. I think this is going to be one of those generations that get a lot better with age.
@shepardpolska

For Nvidia to match a theoretical 500mm2 GCD from AMD with the same lead they have now, they would need something like a 1000mm2 die, which they cannot make and would be ridiculusly expensive if they could. If AMD really does make massive GCDs, then Nvidia cannot compete either in performence or price. AMD will just brute force stuff with more silicone then Nvidia can

Holy hell did AMD cherry pick their benchmarks in their presentation. This actually clearly demonstrates a shortcoming of a chiplet design. So problems like local hotspots and disparities of thermal constraints are exacerbated.

LTT mentioned in one of their vids the Asus TUF 7900XTX APPARENTLY has 3 power connectors, increasing the theoretical max TBP from 375W to 525W. Could this mean 500W AIB cards with 25-30% performance vs the AMD reference cards? If true it looks to me as though the AIB cards COULD be 3GHz+. 3GHz would push it to 73TFlops 3.2Ghz would mean 78TFlops and 3.5GHz puts it over 86TFlops kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4Skmqajd52dq5Y (2:45 for their extrapolated results and 6:52 for the TUF card) They also extrapolated performance based on AMD's percentages for the reference cards showing potentially a mere 1fps loss in CBP 2077, 7fps loss in CODMW2 and 12fps loss in Watchdogs Legions. IF LTT are right then AMD have just handed AIB's a reason for higher prices than the reference cards, increased performance vs the reference cards (4090 founders ed vs AIB cards is utterly pointless at 1-2 frames per second, 3-5 fps even with overclocking), and a reason for consumers to be EXITED by AIB cards performance instead of mere asthetics. EVGA claimed on Ampere they were losing HUNDREDS of dollars on the 30 series top tier cards. Seems like AMD just gace THEIR AIB's a huge slice of the pie AND room for decent profits at th same time... OFC we'll not know for certain till we see ACTUAL benchmarks from BOTH reference and AIB versions.

For reference Nvidia's 4090 founders ed is 1fps slower than the AIB models and 3-5 fps slower with a 33% power increase in MSI afterburner, HUB did some tests showing this and also that the power (actual usage) went from ~430W to just 508W and ACTUAL increase of just 16% NOT the requested 33%. So as I mentioned above and the leaked slide showed IF RDNA3 WAS designed for 3GHz+ then a 40% increase in available power could WELL see the 7900XTX hit 3GHz or more..
