Right in Two - one of the greatest yet most underrated Tool tracks

It was the song that got me into Tool. I remember hearing Parabola and not liking it at first. I heard Right in Two a couple years later, and for whatever reason it stuck with me. Pink Floyd will always be my favorite band (I absolutely adore DSotM, Meddle, and WYWH), but Tool is easily my favorite "modern" band.

I use it a lot as an introduction to Tool for people who have never heard them, it's one of their more digestible, easy listening songs in terms of musical structure and what not. Some people just aren't ready for the 5+ minutes of highly technical instrumentation and existential lyrics

11 is also said to mean, at least in a biblical sense, imperfection. Disorder. and Chaos. The 1 and 1 in 11 are also divided. There is division or space between 1 and 1. 2 is split into the 1+1. The ones oppose each other trying to be THE 1 not realizing they are part of the whole that creates the the 2. 2 being the number of harmony and love. It all comes full circle. Layers upon layers.

I absolutely LOVE this song so much. How the Angels go from being puzzled and amused to baffled and confused, to eventually acknowledging they've been benched along with patience and reason. As if humanity no longer cares for any of them. They become increasingly disgusted with humanity and at first finding us humorous changing to repugnant. Then we hit "The Riff" that I believe is supposed to represent a rapture of sorts for humanity, after we've destroyed ourselves. Leaving us with Maynard's last, almost subtle cry, of "Right in Two" as the last of humanity phases out. It's not the most accurate interpretation, but damn if this song isn't strong.

I think Invincible speaks to many of us longtime Tool fans for pretty obvious reasons. We are getting old. Many of us can't do everything we used to but we still try. On a side note - I wonder if they still teach kids about Ponce De Leon and his search for the "Fountain of Youth". I ask because i wonder how many younger folk get that part of the song. Amazing Analysis! I love that lyric “Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven conscious of its fleeting time here”. The way I see it with that particular lyric is that I don’t take Maynard for a ‘god-fearing’ kinda guy. We can still gaze up and gasp at the magnificence of the heavens above us…without being blindly burdened with the baggage of ancient mythology.
@killdozer34643 жыл бұрын
I always understood that line to mean that by gazing at the grand scale of the universe, we can see how insignificant we are, and how short our "time here" is. so instead of making the best of our time here, we squander it fighting and killing each other over trivial things.
@xXxXcrosbykidXxXx2 жыл бұрын
@@killdozer3464 nailed it. The way I see them, this along with most Tool songs are about awakening your connectedness to your natural life, and disconnecting yourself from the manufactured societal structures and distractions of the modern world. Being aware that you're in a body that will die and return to some other form of matter, and using your gift of consciousness to root yourself in the beauty and the randomness that is the human experience.

Love your reactions Doug. Danny incorporates a lot of tribal elements with the percussion, in particular I love his use of replicating something like flowing water - it really hypnotises you. 10,000 Days has a lot of tracks about Maynard’s mother. If I’m correct, she lived 10,000 days before (& after) the diagnosis of her illness, so there are more lyrics inspired by that/her. I think you’d really enjoy his interview w/ Rick Beato, bc he hardly ever speaks about Tool in general, (he’s VERY reserved), let alone his writing process (he does it after the instrumentals are mostly finished). Rick also did one more recently with Danny too. What I love is how much they’re all just as much in awe of each other’s talents as everyone else is. Less of a band, more 4x insanely talented musicians who joined forces.

This song remains an instructive gospel, by which, I try to live my life. A remnant from my days of greater Tool worship. (5:10 -ish) "Repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift and eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here." This continues to define my prime directive, and imbues an urgency in each day to build this heaven on earth, and that to do other wise is sinful, sloth and greed. Again, from my ancient days of vehement Tool worship. I only live by a FEW songs now.

I love how tool plays with rhythmic patterns of 2’s and 3’s. The whole song does not deviate from an 11/4- most of it following a 3-3-3-2 feel (6/4+5/4 as he puts it). That weird thing that happens in the middle that Doug struggled to count (because the change happened quickly and not for long) is still following the backbone 11/4 meter but it just changes emphasis. That part could be counted as 3-2-2-2-2 or, if following the guitar chords, would be more easily counted as 3-4-4. Sounds different but remarkably still 11/4. This is a great song and I would encourage anyone to put their headphones on and have a deep listen without any talking over the top of it because the song leading up to the build up towards the end is absolutely amazing.

I think maybe we don't know anything about musical composition, but you can appreciate a good composition only listening the different rhythms and how they involve one another or even notes, arppegios or chords. For example, you listen Tool and inmediately you know they are very careful and delicate with the composition, specially since the second album they released many years ago. Since that album, you can perceive their atention to the musical composition and they have been improving their style throughtout the years of its existence. Even, Tool reminds me to Test For Echo by Rush.

I'd really wanna recommend a Buckethead song, but like, it's hard to choose. He's a virtuosic guitarist, he can shred, but he also has a lot of slow melodic pieces that are really good and varies in genres. I guess, I'd recommend All In The Waiting, Sketches of Spain, and For Mom just to name a few of his slower songs. My personal favorite is his Pike #264, Poseidon.
