@@2giantmonsters It's hard to argue that! I remember taping For Whom the Bell Tolls off the radio. We were all Metalheads but when I played the song for them they didn't get why I liked it. Too fast, too loud, can't make out all the lyrics, singer has a HORRIBLE voice. I heard all these remarks and I'm sure a few more that I don't recall. By the time Master of Puppets came out they all had "got it"! It's always cool when you turned 12 to 15 people on to the band...even if it took them over a year. Then how many people did those friends turn on to the band! I kind of got a "new band" pass where if I told them to check out a new band they trusted that they should REALLY look into them since probably 6 or 8 of them would call Metallica their favorite band of all bands or performers!

It's great to hear a composer critique this. When I was young in the 80's I always thought that metal, especially this band, had a medievel sound. It sounds like something that classical composers would have come up with. Like the soundtrack to the great crusades. The conductor said it was very well written music. The symphony really added to their sound. Great reaction.

You should react to Orion, from the same album. It's an instrumental that really shows the unique genius of their best bassist, Cliff burton. Also, please, for the love of all that is good in this world, do the studio version. Metallica is a great band but they (Lars) can't really play live.
@MrBassmaster723 жыл бұрын
I don’t even know where to start with that ignorant last sentence. Is Lars the best drummer ever? Certainly not. However, he has played thousands of live shows all over the world for arguably the biggest metal band ever. I know it’s the “cool” thing to dump on Lars but to say he can’t play live is asinine.
@eliashornwall85463 жыл бұрын
@@MrBassmaster72 I know it’s a bit of an over exaggeration to say that he can’t play live, but you must admit, he’s not exactly the most consistent drummer ever. Just in this video even, he’s not looking too good, and this is where he played with an orchestra, so presumably he actually tried for this one, instead of the rest, where he either was 24 and high on cocaine or older and just gave up. There are some “questionable” drum fills he likes to do that gets sprinkled in, with his otherwise mediocre playing, which all in all makes live Metallica a less than adequate live experience. The few exceptions to me are the old stuff from when he was younger and could still play fast, and the absolute latest tours from 2017-2019 when they actually started trying again. Still Lars’s weird fills and his tempo changes still makes their live stuff very sub par. So no I’m not just dunking on him cause it’s popular. The sad fact is he just isn’t very good live. Ps. This is not to discredit his huge impact on metal or to say that he is a bad songwriter. Just saying he’s not very tight. Edit: Spelling errors.
@aldersmoke13 жыл бұрын
Nothing is more exasperating than the Lars hate. I play in bands and I'm super picky about drummers, and I've watched a ton of live Metallica footage. Lars is fine. I swear every modern metalhead expects every drummer to be all blast beats and double bass or they suck. Lars actually has interesting, syncopated ideas, as opposed to hitting every drum every 2 seconds.
@MrBassmaster723 жыл бұрын
@@eliashornwall8546 I agree with you on this post. This was said much better. Well said. Lars may be a bit sloppy for sure but who cares really? The influence he had on metal music is huge and ask any metal drummer out there and they cite Lars as an influence. I do miss the fast younger days. We are on the same page with that. It just gets under my skin having to defend Lars. I’ve always liked him and he had a big impact on me personally. I think of it like basketball sometimes. Is the last guy on the bench for an NBA team as good as LeBron or Jordan? No they aren’t. But that doesn’t mean they can’t play well. Are they the best ever? No. Could they dominate any “normal” Joe Blow basketball player? Every time. I have seen Metallica a dozen times live and never did I consider it to be a marginal experience. It’s been fantastic every time and I’ll always continue to go see them live. No matter what kind of nite Lars may be having at the time. With that said, I appreciate you clarifying your position and thanks much for not taking it personally and simply making your point. I sure wish everyone could do that but it appears to be a lost art these days. Have a good one man! Keep jammin!!!
@Broccoli_Highkicks3 жыл бұрын
If you're going to a rock & roll show and expecting a perfect reproduction of the studio recording, you've missed the point rather tragically. As Mantas of the famously shambolic band Venom once screeched into the mic, "If you want to hear Venom [studio recording quality and accuracy], go home and listen to your fucking LPs, cuz tonight you are gonna get one and a half hours of pure fucking mayhem!" A big aspect of going to a live metal show is rocking out, not counting beats or trying to get a good cellphone clip for the Youtoobs. In a live situation, passion and feel are more important than accuracy, at least in heavy rock music. Besides, every rock & roll show ought to be a unique experience with spur of the moment improvisation, crowd interaction, etc. - what's the point of seeing a band twice if it's the same exact show each time? That's something I greatly miss about the 1970s, when any given show could feature long stretches of improvisation, impromptu alternate arrangements of songs, etc. When a rock concert could actually be a unique musical event, instead of a carbon copy of every other night of the tour. Also, I think it's a bit rich to complain to the creators of the piece that "that's not how you played it the first time!". I remember when Prince smoked the Superbowl half-time show, which probably will stand as the greatest of all time, hearing people jeer and complain that he didn't play the Purple Rain solo exactly as it was on the record. OK, when YOU write a monster hit song and are widely recognized as one of the greatest guitar players and performers in popular music, YOU go out and play it note-perfect every single night... I think when you write a song, you get to play it any way you damn well please. But music fans get so entitled, they think because they bought the record and the shirt, they can put the artist in their back pocket. Having ranted about all that, it is true enough that Lars does not have the skills to back up his overinflated rock star ego - everyone knows this, even Metallica knows this. Hell, James turned Lars down the first time they jammed together because Lars was so bad. But Metallica would never have been what it was and is without Lars. And hey, in a live situation I don't really care if he takes shortcuts, and ultimately, people who get too anal about details and technique tend to be people who spend their whole life practising in their bedroom and never inspiring a single kid to pick up an instrument.

Also, about this song, there are some curious facts that I believe would be nice to share: 1st- there's a riff from the song, after the second solo (the one from Kirk) that was from a David Bowie song, it was an homage from Cliff! 2nd - in most performances (not this one, sadly), James sings Pancakes instead of fix me just before a solo (in this particular version, it was "Fix me baby"). Besides being funny for its randomness, it's also an homage to Cliff (from a joke he made in the last tour he was), and would be amazing to see your reaction to it, sadly it didn't happen

It's an incredible song for sure! For the next Metallica, I have two recommendations, either Orion (from the same album) or The Call of Ktulu (from Ride the Lightning, the one before Master). But if it's possible, I'd recommend their studio version (even though Orion has amazing performances with their bassist Rob Trujillo, and and Ktulu was featured in both S&M and S&M2), because these are 2 masterpieces by Cliff Burton, and should be listened with him playing every riff, every interlude, every solo (and yes, there are bass solos in both songs). If the time comes and you still prefer to listen to a live version, Ktulu has several presentations with Cliff, Jason (particularly S&M with the SF Orchestra) and Rob. For Orion, though, if it's a live version, it must be Turin 2019, in the official Metallica KZbin channel, it was played that day as an homage to Cliff, and it's beautiful. Sadly Cliff never got to play it live, so the only recording we have with his bass is the studio version. Waiting for more metal mondays!

I was hoping you would be the first reaction to notice and point out since you're a composer. Cliff is a classical fan and one of his favorites is Bach. Classical music tells a story and this song can be understood without the lyrics. It's fast paced meaning how the world seems and you're frantic to get your fix. It then slows down and mellows out meaning you got your fix and when it speeds up again at a heavier tempo than the first. This shows what it's like when your fix wears off. Good reaction though.

Would love to see a Wintersun (Sons of Winter and Stars) reaction! Or Galneryus (Angel of Salvation. Full song). Also Ne Obliviscaris (song: And Plague Flowers) too!

@@petergjata1498 Such a sadness to see them completely and continuously overlooked... Go figure the number of people that talk about Cliff Burton, yet nobody knows of the work in bass by Brendan "Cygnus" Brown... But "Hey! This song is an anthem up to this day, therefore, it must be good for that to happen!"...

Doug, react to Big Big Train. Suggest 'East Coast Racer' from live performance (or Victorian Brickwork). I guarantee that you will not regret the choice. I listen to prog over 20 years now and this band is a true gem!

Exactly my thoughts. What a great song it is in its original album variant, and what an unlistenable mess it is in this performance, unfortunately.

Especially in the 90's Metallica said that they tuned at least a half-step down for all of their songs to preserve James's Voice, because he blew it out in '90 during the Black Album.

The entire Master of Puppets album is about the way people are controlled. The song Master of Puppets was specifically written to convey how cocaine controls people.

Hi, Doug! If you like metal music along with orchestra check out the swedish band Therion, specially their live album " The Miskolc Experience", where they play along with a full orchestra! You could check their cover versions to classical artists songs, but I strogly recommed their own songs, specially "The Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah" or "Schwarzalbenheim"!

Metallica like to add b2 and b5 to the scale they're playing in, because it's metal of course, and it has to sound evil! Also, the part when you say they're cheating with the beat, it's true. It's done unintentionally of course, it just sounded good to them and they went for it.

I attribute the E-flat tuning to Hendrix and the effect that his tuning has had on the ears of generations of subsequent guitarists.

Hi, Doug! I really like a lot all your analysis, specially those on classic metal, and they always help me to catch some harmonical issues. But, in my opinion, it's a pity when you choose live interpretations, specially on metal genres, as musicians usually are on then more dedicated to create an atmosphere of feelings with the audience than to recreate their compositions in the optimal way (and, of course, sound is not as good and worked as at studio recordings). In this occasion, I think this orchestral version is not the best for this song (well, I really don't find SM album of interest because its poor orchestral arrangements). In fact, I missed more of your interesting musical comments on this video; I guess the songs deserves it. The same for others on Iron Maiden, for example, when alive recordings were chosen. By the way, you are right: you catched the deep sense of the song, beyond its first significance on drugs. In fact, almost all songs at Master of Puppets album are about different ways of control, in that particular way of Metallica's lyrics, in wich their recitation came from the evil being that they critic, according with their aggressive style and sound. Thank you a lot for your nice and interesting work over here (and sorry for my poor English). Best regards ;-)

"Loss of control" as a lyrical theme is ALL OVER James' lyrics from that entire era of the band. Pretty much every song on Ride the Lightning is related to that theme to one degree or another: "Fight Fire with Fire": the threat of annihilation in a nuclear war "Ride the Lightning": imprisonment, capital punishment "For Whom the Bell Tolls": frightened soldier on the front lines of war "Fade to Black": mental illness leading to suicide, death in general "Trapped Under Ice": self-explanatory "Escape": oppression by society, social outcast "Creeping Death": Divine retribution, judgment from God And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Young James Hetfield was clearly writing about his personal fear of having control over his life being ripped away from him by one thing or another.
@aldersmoke13 жыл бұрын
Do the studio version. The orchestra overwhelms everything here, not to mention Hetfield only singing half the lyrics.

maybe this would have benefited from "compare and contrast" of the two versions as opinions seem divided below but leaning towards the studio rather than +orch version. I don't know either version so can't comment on which would be better

I think you should analyze James's work a bit more, especially transitions and how he plays with melodies, transmutating them in a song in such a unique way. After 20+ years of listening to Metallica I always find something new!
