In my opinion, one of their top 10 songs and one of the most underrated. Whenever I sit back and close my eyes and listen to this song, the intro feels kind of young and perhaps innocent- it takes me to Macedonia, watching a young ATG tame horses with Phillip. Then the military beat kicks in and you start feeling like he is getting older, his training is nearing completion and he's readying the phalanxes for battle and conquest. You can feel the despair in India as his men mutiny. I wish they could have came up with some lyrics around his golden burial. Truly an epic jam

Discovering Iron Maiden is such an interesting experience. I was always a huge Metallica fan (even though they were before my time) and some other trash music, but I never ventured into listening to Maiden . A couple years ago I was at the gym and just decided for no specific reason to listen to Maiden. I went down the typical top 10 songs in Spotify and one after another I was in complete disbelief of how great they were. I assumed these were cherry picked songs and that the albums would otherwise be mediocre. I decided to start from the very beginning (which for many more classic rock bands is not always the best place to start). I came to find out on my journey that basically every single song from their first album through seventh son is simply incredible. It's only more impressive when you come upon their body of work starting from Brave New World. I've since seen them live as well and hope to see them again. They are just spectacular in every way. Greatest heavy metal band of all time in my humble opinion.

Actually a critical view of the ways both Bruce and Blaze handled it would be interesting. Not a who's better but rather, what is that third guitar doing? What syllables are they emphasizing, what other changes can be seen to accomodate each singers range and character? Wouldnt be fair to ask that much, just saying that seems interesting because it points out some of the realities of writing something and having different musicians perform it under different situations (venues or even available instrumentation)

This solo was made for the solos. Adrian Smith (solo 1) and Dave Murray (solo 2) are so different yet complement each other so well. Both are melodic and take the listener on a journey. It's hard to determine which is best and it always seems to be the one you're listening to at that moment in time. Ultimately, I side with Murray and his fiery finish that starts at 10:00

I once won a pub quiz because of this song! it was a draw between my team and another and the tie break question was 'Where did Alexander the Great die'? died of fever in Babylon. Thanks Iron Maiden! Hey Doug, I've been an IM fan for 40 years. I absolutely love their compositions. Their first six albums were so refreshing (at the time) to listen to. I have listened to those albums hundreds of times. But I have to say, listening to you break them down like you do, makes them refreshing all over again. I sit in front of my screen wide eyed and ears open, taking all that you have to say. Adding the piano to this video only reinforces your take. Thank you for doing these! I hope you continue to "react" to more Maiden melodies.

Well, for me it's not the piano, but the guitar. But Maiden is pretty "basic" as far as chords and harmony go. Mostnof it is either in E, D, or A (minor, of course) and then if you know your chord-scale relationship, you can jam along instantly, 90% of the time.

If I may, I would like to put some opinions of mine on this work and would love a response from you, or the community that follows it. (Sorry, but I don't speak English, so I'm using the famous Google Translate). 1º - We have the sound of the wind as if it brought, from the past, the phrase of Phelip II from Macedonia said to Alexander. 2º - The sound of the march is important, as I believe it is the army preparing or even marching through Greece. 3º - The sound of the galloping bass is a characteristic of Steve Harris, but here I think he found a purpose that was more than fair for her. Alexander was a great general who used cavalry formidably. So the possible reason for using this feature. 4º - When we go to the ground, at the beginning, it gives the impression of something unfinished, it seems that the melody does not end. And it shows a certain uncertainty for the final battle. 5º - In the minute 7:02 you are amazed by the sound. I believe it is the moment when Alexander and his army come across the army of Darius III. Then the final moment of the battle began. 6º - After that, the bass stops being galloped and only becomes fast and frantic, and with much more strength. It is the armies walking against each other. The more metallic and heavy sound of the bass is due, I believe, to represent the sound of armor hitting swords and shields as they walk. 7º - It is interesting for the guitar to start on its own, but after finishing its melody a second guitar enters and accompanies this same melody. I believe it would be as if a soldier felt alone in the battle, but out of nowhere his companion appears beside him and helps him at that moment, showing that he is no longer alone. 8º - Now when the ground becomes more aggressive, this is the soldier's battle cry and at each stop is a soldier from Darius III, falling. Until the victory cry begins, which is at the end of the ground. 9º - Bruce returns and the music continues at a fast pace. Possibly because Alexander's goals had already been accomplished and things got a little "run over" (I don't know how to say it in English).

I'm so glad you looked at this song, and I'm happy that you enjoyed listening to it. ! It's one of my favorites from this album (even though the whole album is basically a masterpiece). Try "Wasted Years", which opens with a guitar jumping through a descending scale on the high E string played interlaced over the open E note. The title track is also really cool, featuring some really interesting guitar work. Hell, the whole thing is good! It was really cool listening to you lay some of this song out on the piano - gives it a whole new dimension. I don't know if it's Bruce doing the opening narration. I always thought it was someone else. As for historical accuracy, I think they may have taken some license with that part. I just looked at something the other night about ATG, and they said he became the Macedonian King at 20, where here they say he was 19. What's a year, right? They also said that the cause of his death is not known, but here they say "He died of fever in Babylon". Also, in the beginning, it seems as if his father is on his deathbed telling Alexander to go get his own kingdom - but the thing I looked at said his father was murdered. And I've read about some of the battles that he waged, which seem different from the ones they laid out here. Oh well - it's still a great song! Thanks for checking it out!
