In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm making it a Masterpiece Maiden Friday by completing my exploration of their classic 1988 album Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Over the course of the channel, I've listened to four of the eight songs from the album, and now it's time to listen to the rest. In this video, I'll hear Moonchild, Can I Play With Madness, The Evil That Men Do, and Only the Good Die Young. And, I'll weave together the album's concept and narrative as we go. Come along for the ride! Up the Irons!

This album, together with its predecessor "Somewhere in time" are where Maiden peaked - for me at least. I know "Powerslave" is often regarded as their masterpiece, but as a fan of Prog, you can't deny that the two albums I meantioned have more complex songwriting, more intricate soundscapes. When Adrian Smith left the band after this, an inevitable decline happened, imho.

Same for me, I'm more on those 2 albums, yet I also like quite a lot of songs from Piece of Mind as well. Powerslave is in itself probably the album I have listened the least, but I have listened to those major songs on live albums.

Big fan of Somewhere in Time, but Seventh Son is a little too pompous and dry by comparison to SIT for my liking, and I also think the lyrics took a step down, although I don't think any 80's Iron Maiden album has particularly good lyrics with the possible exception of Piece of Mind.

Pure magic this album. Every song, every lyric, the vocals, the artwork, the riffs, the soloing, the harmonies, the sound… my all time Maiden favourite. Great reaction! Just want to emphasize that from 28:33 - 28:44 is Steve Harris playing at what I can only describe as a BLISTERING speed. He's a huge inspiration to me as a Bass player and a genuinely unique talent. All of the boys in Maiden are genius talents but the way Steve composes and ties everything in is just remarkable. Up the Irons.

I would say his vocals on Somewhere in Time are even more ferocious, with Seventh Son a close second. For example, on songs like "Caught Somewhere in Time", "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner", "Deja-Vu" and "Alexander the Great". Yet at the same time he evolved even more on Seventh Son when it came to singing in different voices and the way he told the story through his different vocal styles. How exciting it must have been to be a Maiden fan back in the day who experienced the band's evoution from the Di'Anno days to Seventh Son. I can hear the seeds of their album Brave New World on Seventh Son but that's another story from awesome Maiden history. Up the irons.

I know these days they get accused of “overindulging”, but it should also be considered that they have 3 very talented lead guitarists who are coming up with some of their best ideas, they have 4 very good songwriters (Steve, Bruce, Adrian and Janick) who have so much to contribute, sometimes it comes across as overindulgence, but I don’t think it’s deliberate, it’s more “that’s too good to leave out”…. There are a small handful of occasions where they probably should’ve shortened parts, or at least varied it a little so that its not too repetitive, like The Angel And The Gambler and its 500 runs of the chorus 😂, and as much as I love Hell On Earth, that opening 2 and half minutes probably could’ve been half that, same as the outro, and I would’ve preferred a second run of the chorus instead. I think a lot of the time when they are in the 10+ minutes range, it’s just right, sometimes it’s a little bit too much but I don’t think they were being intentionally overindulgent, and a handful of times it was totally unnecessary… but they are where they are because they’ve always done it their way.

I actually think they challenged themselves- in the pop crazy 80s- to write a “pop” song. It’s much slicker than most of their catalogue, but it’s still recognisably Maiden. Great reaction Doug. You asked about Only The Good Die Young and I always assumed it was the opposite to your interpretation. Not that he would live on and give in to evil, but it was him saying he was going to die, either he had a premonition or was going to commit suicide. I get that from these lines in the song: "Time it waits for no man My future it is revealed Time it waits for no man My fate is sealed" then: "If I cancel tomorrow the undead will thank me today" then: "The moon is red and bleeding The sun is burned and black The book of life is silent No turning back" then: "So I think I'll leave you With your bishops and your guilt So until the next time Have a good sin" They all point to him deciding to die in my interpretation. But I can see what you mean also - just never struck me that way!

Mr. Helvering if you haven't you must attend one of their concerts. It is life changing, I saw them last Oct. and they were just as good as now as they were in the 80's.

Imagine being in the crowd with Moonchild as the opening number. It'd be pandemonium. Bit like Aces High as the opener. I was in an Aussie crowd when they opened with Aces High, the whole place was nuts! Was great

Wow, thanks man. This album is the album that made me step over the threshold, into the metal world. I basically wore out the cassette tape back in 1988. It is definitely one of the best albums of all time and it's value is going up with every passing year.

Funny thing about this album...The one song that ended up being the most popular, and even had radio play (Can I Play With Madness), is my least favorite song on the record.🤔 At first, my fav was 'Infinite Dreams', then it was 'The Clairvoyant', then 'SSoaSS', then 'The Prophecy'.. This album was actually my introduction to Iron Maiden about 25 years ago. Damn thing blew me away, and I knew I had to check out more of them. All these years later and they are still one of my favorite bands.👍😎🤘

It was my first Maiden album, it’s my favorite Maiden album. So many listens and analysis of what everything means, the musicianship, the craft of it all. I think it’s the band’s opus but somehow still underrated at times. Glad you took the time to hear all of it and break it down!

The album from the year I was born. Probably the best album overall of the best band overall. They completely devastated my music taste in the best possible way. I'll be forever grateful to the guy at school that told me "You should try this".

I love hearing "seven deadly sins..." lets me know the cd is repeating itself in my car ...what a great record. You mentioned Nightmares in regards to Infinite Dreams...I'd love to see you review Still Life from Piece of Mind. One more time, Doug :THANK YOU for doing these and making some of the most entertaining videos I've EVER seen In ALL of youtube land! This is amazing seeing the joy of music (I've been into Maiden since I was little) but you break it down from the story to the musical aspect and it makes for a very re-watchable movie, just like the music you are reviewing. I've heard these tracks COUNTLESS times and I find myself coming back to your videos time and time again. MUCH THANKS MAN GREAT JOB

This, to me, is the very pinnacle of Iron Maiden. Maybe it's because it was my first album, I bought this when I was 13. I still love it to this day. The mysticism, the esoteric, and the sometimes sinister lyrics coupled with superb musicianship make this a true masterpiece or magnum opus IMHO. Great video - was fun hanging out on this!

Thank you for bringing this to your fantastic channel. I’ve been a big Maiden fan since 1980 and my opinion is they got better with each album right through the 80s so by the time seven sons was released I was in heaven, but what makes this album stand out more than their predecessors is every song is strong enough to stand alone by themselves or in its order on the album ( what I’m meaning is by playing the album in its order and following the story in your mind / thoughts is brilliant ) . There isn’t a weak song on this album in my honest opinion and sadly it took till brave new world that they got another album without a weak song . Keep up the great work :) From Scotland with appreciation \m/
