#duranduran #ordinaryworld
In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm reacting to music by Duran Duran for the first time on the channel. Their 1993 hit Ordinary World is not new to me, but I haven't heard it in many years. It was lovely to return to this poignant and beautiful song...and play along with it a bit. I hope you enjoy!

Thank you for writing this. Sorry for your loss. I lost my dad at 25, and adopted my siblings in the wake of that loss. Today in the car I felt the need to play the song for some reason, it always blows me away how music can connect us through these threads.

I always think of Ordinary World as a new one by Duran Duran. It’s 30 years old. It has one of the simplest guitar solos ever, all on one string, but it’s beautifully in character with the rest of the track.

This is some genius song writing by Warren Cuccurullo. The whole song is actually in B major (the c#m at the start of the verse being the II) but it's full of borrowed chords, beautifully voiced extended chords and great guitar work in general.

One of the (many) things that intrigues me about this song is the stutter-step rhythm inserted within the steady 4/4 time signature at strategic points in the song. It's almost like a small catch in your throat that might occur when you're struggling to deal with a sad memory. There's so much carefully considered craft in the writing and arrangement of this song.

When I cut my bass playing teeth in the mid eighties, I was influenced by Steve Harris, Cliff Burton and John Taylor. JT is an immense bass player. Fun fact. The Wedding Album truly is outstanding. Well, save for the mercifully short Shotgun. Every other song is fantastic! I especially like the deeper cuts such as Breath After Breath, Shelter, To Whom It May Concern and Sin of the City. I got to hear Ordinary World before 99% of the US because I heard the debut of the song on BBC radio. Gotta love shortwave radio! That said, there is one album that, in my view, beats The Wedding Album hands down! That's Meddazaland. A truly phenomenal concept album about the pitfalls of being a celebrity. Beware, because you will sink deeper and deeper into Medazzaland with each subsequent listen! I think this album shows Duran Duran at their most progressive stage. It is very different. I think that's why it was lost on some of the fans. Nevertheless, it truly is worth visiting/revisiting.
