In case someone else has not posted it, many of Megadeth's "official" videos are actually edited for time, shorting the songs. For example, the 'Hangar 18' official video has several solos edited out. 'In My Darkest Hour', which you have already watched, is also edited. And, 'Sweating Bullets' is edited losing around 50 seconds. I don't know why they did it, other than maybe to fit within Mtv's time parameters?

I remember the bad review of Holy Wars. It was when Doug was reducing every single review to what he knew before: just chord progressions, nothing else. He had no appreciation for a song in E (big 'no'), the changes in tempo, the excellent riffing, the variety of the song, the tempo changes, the arrangement - didn't want to appreciate any of it. But smart man he is, he grew to appreciate the energy, complexity, rhythms and variety of metal. I followed that development over time from an outside view with him ultimately turning into an air drummer and destroying his hair style :-) I really like this development. Reminds me of countless people I know (including my own son) who got sucked into the great musicianship and details that can be discovered listening to good metal bands, not to speak of the groove of music played in a precise and natural way .Keep it up, Doug!

The end sections of Hangar 18 are in two parts, E minor , but then switches to a chromatic riff thats "E,F,F# F# an octave higher" like a metal/blues scale . Would recommend listening to "a tout le monde" where Daves vocals are arguably better. Hi Doug! Loved your reaction to this particular song, pretty much mine when I've heard it back in 94. Completely mindblown by the solos, and rythmic changes. The solo duel towards the end of the song, are indeed shared by Marty and Dave, and you can clearly listen who did what solo. Marty's are articulated, and have a much cleaner sound, while Dave's sound a bit more chaotic and less defined. If memory serves me well, 8 remember reading and interview with Ellefson (bass player) where he said that this was the first song where he used a 5 string bass, because e felt the need to use the extra D String. As for the your opinion about the voice, don't worry you are not the only one who doesn't appreciate it. Dave has a particular style, not versatile, but it plays a big part in making Megadeth being what they are. I guess there's no in between on this matter.. I love the band!

Still far better an album than Risk or Supercollider, both of which are terrible. But at least Supercollider seemed like Dave wrote it because he wanted to, rather than Risk which was written to become a radio hit. Rust in Peace, the band's first album in three years, carries Megadeth's individuality into a broader, more open musical arena where nobody can touch them... Rust in Peace maintains a certain continuity in sound and attitude with the group's first records while demonstrating how much further the concept - nasty speed thrash with an almost jazzlike intricacy and drive - can go... This is one thrashmetal band that jazzbos can get into, provided the snarl of Mustaine's lead vocals and the sustained level of anger and intensity don't send them running for the door... The arrangements, using multiple meters, multipart song structures, lightning-quick shifts in density, tempo and accenting, a variety of guitar overtones and sonics and occasional respites from the slamming, full-speed-ahead fervor, are consistently riveting. - Excerpts from original Rolling Stone review

The part at the end you "struggled" with, and were totally right on it was floating around F#, was the rhythm parts between the solos. It very quickly goes G, F#, E, F#, G, F#, E then sliding the power chord F# to G 3 times and a rest. On the last time, it then goes F#, and resolves to E. It feels odd if you think about it on keyboard to resolve that way, but on guitar, it's resolving to the low E on an E standard tuned guitar, so it probably felt natural to resolve there. It's funny how the instrument influences the song writing (where open strings are, etc.).

The thing about Dave's voice is that it's a character voice, not meant to be technical singing with huge range and clarity and power like a Halford. Dave's singing style is more punk-influenced, meant to convey the anger and emotion of his lyrics; sort of a snarl if you will. More about attitude. Personally I love his vocals as they perfectly suit the music he writes. He also throws in a lot of clever inflections, for instance in Tornado Of Souls when he says "Hanging up I wanted to cry", he sings it with a mock-crying expression.

Perfectly said. People don't understand how interesting Dave is as a singer., He's full of nuances with a punk attitude.

Return to Hangar is a rare, very rare, instance where a song follow up actually delivers

Megadeth songs put your brain to work. It is not easy to assimilate in the first run, but once you understand whats happening... Booom! Masterpiece

Five Magics from this album is probably my favourite song ever but I prefer the original. The remaster isn’t always superior!

I want this feeling again. Hearing a song for the first time.

Surprised since you reviewed Call of Khtulu, Song writing credits on that Song include Mustaine who tadaaaaaa used the same Chord Progression on the intro to this Song

You're right, that riff in the second half is in F# and plays around with G. Edit: It starts with a quick E, F then F# which makes the key seem a little ambiguous if you're not familiar with the riff.

im crying at his reaction every time dave sings lol

Thanks for doing more Megadeth. You really should broaden up even more and try early Mercyful Fate, though. I think that will be interesting for you. They were pioneering their very ovn style back in then early 80’s. I would recommend something from the album Melissa, like the opening song «Evil», but others here might have better tailored suggestions. Would be cool if you did one og their songs.

Opeth's album "Morningrise" had just turned 28 yo, which means the songs "Black Rose Immortal" and "To Bid You Farawell" is waiting for so long for @Doug's reaction....

Having grown up on this on Heabangers Ball, i always thought the solos were actually the aliens talking. If u watch the video, they cut to aliens in cells during the solos. Also, i heard that u can tell who plays the solo because Dave's always sound a little sad? Marty is more technical? Does it match?

Daily Doug? Hangar 18? Opportunity to listen for the first time AGAIN THOROUGHLY enjoy these reactions

Doug, so appreciate your content, as much as I appreciate Megadeth. If you appreciate this song, or the album as a whole, then you absolutely MUST do a deep dive on "Countdown to Extinction"!!! Love ya, thanks. ❤

Please react tot the original RIP recordings from now on, they are much better than the remaster due to Daves rerecording of the vocals.

I think you'd appreciate Five Magics

Hi Doug, you should check out Dave's vocals in some of his post-Rust In Peace work, he really worked on his technique a lot more after this album and it's very obvious in songs such as Addicted to Chaos, Kick the Chair etc.

It was a good call to listen to the audio instead of watching the video because they actually changed the music in the video to be heavily abridged (took off an entire minute of the song)

The last part is a back and forth between alien horrors (Bam, Bam, Bam) and human feelings (the solos).

You don't have to figure out if you love metal you just feel it and know.

Megadeth at that time was simply amazing. Dave Mustaine was even taking Bel Canto lessons from Elizabeth Sabine, who trained Ron Keel, Axl Rose, and Michael Sweet from Stryper, among numerous others.
