When doing the mission for Algernon me and buell had many arguments but I tried other horses and he didn't seem so bad but he was one of the worst to come back in a swamp full of gators cried real tears when he died at the end of Arthur's story

turkoman was my favorite. The race/warhorse hybrid made it ideal for me. Could go as fast in a straight line as an arabian, and the warhorse made it so near nothing could spook it, and a massive health pool allowing it to eat bullets like they it was nothing. most frustrating horse in the game for me was the black arabian you buy at the stable in st. Denis, not only would it spook over nothing, but also had a weird lack of self preservation and would cluelessly walk off of cliffs and the like. Eventually after spending enough time with it, well after level four bonding, it behaved ideally, but boy that idiot made me mad so many times 😅

I could take a horse from the Murfree Brood during a random event. Their horses are full of burn marks and bruises. They have a very unique appearance. A bit like a zombie horse.

There’s a random encounter you come across as John in tall trees during the epilogue where the skinner gang has killed a couple riding on a wagon. Their horse is alive but wounded and covered in arrows. You can save the horse in the stable and the arrows will remain on the horse

I found the white Arabian but I also found another Arabian that was dark with white splotches almost like a cheetah and it was a male, exact same stats as the female but less skittish, found it in the mountains right above the Indian reservation.

I have that horse too..prefer it much more then the white ( or the black arabian), because it is idd a lot less skittish then the white one. The white one goes off over about anything. So annoying.

that's strange I thought the black arabian with the white spot was only accessible via purchase in st denis. In my playthrough it was not only the most skittish horse I'd ever tamed, but also the dumbest, running off cliffs and the like. No other horse made me as frustrated as that boah. but, there is a hidden bonding mechanic and I'm sure of it, because once spending enough time with it, well beyond level four bonding, I was eventually able to break it of its bad habits

I've had the wild white arabian be fearless, and the black arabian be the dumbest, most skittish horse I've ever dealt with. And I swear there's a hidden bonding mechanic that goes beyond level 0 thru 4, because even with the black arabian, it went from bucking me if a ghost farted and running off of cliffs like it was blind, to not flinching at a pack of wolves or if it gets shot, and eventually stopped blindly running off cliffs or directly into trees and the like.

My favourite horse in the game is the Bay Roan Ardennes- purely because I love large, thick horses and it’s great for dangerous situations, it never bucks Arthur/John off, even if wolves surround it. And also the fact that the neigh is deeper than other horse breeds really adds onto it.

Colored my white arabian hair black and named her sugarfoot for woody woodpeckers horse. Small, smart and easily scared. I knew she was going to die, but it still broke my heart when it happened, she was with me pretty much since chapter 2.

My favorite is either the Tennessee Walker you get at the very start of the game or a wild blood bay Thoroughbred you can find in The Heartlands. It may not be the best horse but it was the first horse I remember taming, so now every time I replay the game I make sure to tame one and have it in my stables.

Dutch Warmbloods do make great horses. Never used one as a main, but made a point of stealing them from mercenaries in my low honor playthrough, bonding to level 4 and using them as a backup for awhile before selling them

That's been my best horse. After having it through multiple playthroughs. Have tamed all of the Arabians and have the special edition thorobread which is also a good horse. I do like the warped brindle but that Andalusian has proven to be the most reliable for me. I didn't find it my first couple playthroughs but have made it a point to go tame it every playthrough since.

Fun fact if you continue to ride and calm/train the White Arabian far past max bonding and around threats it will gradually become less and less skittish! I got her early in my first playthrough and by the end she would still get nervous easily but she would rarely buck me off. Unless she was feeding me to a cougar XS

Never forget Buell. Have it as John and it's such a good fellow. Bucks you of very rarely on Level 4 bonding. But when it comes just to bravery my forever favorite will be the grey Hungarian Halfbred. Such a great handling except in Saint Denis because of its size.

lol for me that horse gave me more problems than any other horse in the game. Dummy would run into trees and off cliffs, and also spook if a rabbit farted. kinda loved him/hated him, but after spending enough time with it, well beyond level 4, it grew a brain and a pair of balls. Now he's a solid, reliable horse. I swear Rockstar put a RNG mechanic in for horses as well as a hidden bonding mechanic that goes well beyond 0-4

the white arabian will actually become really brave and calm once you spend enough time with it. the black arabian that you buy in st. Denis was faaar more skittish and also just outright dumb, for me, took a long time even after 4th level bonding before it stopped running off cliffs or bucking me if a squirrel crossed our path. i was lucky enough to buy the game new when any horse in the game, regardless of rarity or if it was only supposed to be accessible via purchase, would randomly spawn at a farm/ranch outside st denis. I "rolled" until i got a bay colored turkoman, and i used it the whole game. A hybrid of a race and war horse made it great. In a straight line it was as fast as any purebred race horse, the trade off being handling, the warhorse made it so almost nothing could spook the thing. Also gave it a massive health pool, that horse could eat lead shot as if it where nothing. honorable mention to mustangs too, especially the grey one.

My favorite was an American Paint that I got off of a bounty hunter. I named him Roosevelt, and he was fast as all hell. My second favorite was a silver bay Kentucky Saddler named Bourbon. She was a good horse. We got run over by a wagon, and she got dragged before I could revive her.

Recently found a Thoroughbred with a Brindle coat. Looks stunning, I had never seen it in the game before. After years of many play throughs My personal favourites are either the all black American standerbred found near Hanging dog ranch or a dapple bay tennis walker I love the bronze colour of the coat

To me the best one is the english pure blood that appears with the black lady in those race encounters… super brave, good stats, and can end up having 10/10 of speed with a good saddle and 2 victories in the races + unique pelt

The best horse is the Hungarian Half Breed. They don't die easily. Rarely throw you when wolfs come. Level 4: The horse has enough speed for the whole game. Very faithful horse

The only horse you really need is the shire, when you get to max level bonding and can sprint indefinitely, speed doesn't become as big a factor. While being scared shitless of everything hostile is a massive factor. Shire don't give no fucks, i've had my boy literally run over cougars and wolves and not bump me.

I had a white Arabian in my second playthrough I had kept all the way through to chapter 4 when I came across an O'Driscoll camp. I got off of her and snuck closer to the camp on foot. Well the fighting ended up spooking her and she took off running on a narrow rail road bridge and got hit. I see this with the fighting still going on and freak out and take off running towards her to revive her. In my panic I forgot about my own health and didn't realize my health core was low. Right as I get to her I get hit. On respawn her body was gone and just the saddle was laying there on the ground. Tried to load my last auto save which happened to be after I respawned. My last manual save had been hours earlier. It was on sight from then on with O'Driscolls and trains.

My personal favorites are reverse dapple black thoroughbred and the turkoman shown. I got the dapple black from cheats, and used the cheat save glitch to keep the horse and the money I got as well. Pretty sweet.

You can get the Perlino Andalusian Horse Early its in Roanoke Ridge under the R south of Charlotte's house. I think its a pretty good horse early in the beginning plus doesnt get as skittish like the Arabian. I used it mainly for hunting for bears, cougars, wolves, and panthers named it Isamu and my Red Chesnut Arabian Redrum in my current playthrough. Ive used all the Arabian horses and Turkoman horses in previous playthroughs when theyre available and i really like them all. I plan on having John in this playthrough get the Buell, the Gold Nokota, and the Black Arabian. I always have john keep the horse he has during the epilogue.
