I'm a fan of doing this in parallel with a bass amp and the straight, unprocessed DI. Using a really convincing "tubey" guitar preamp or distortion pedal alongside a bass preamp with a blend function also does the trick.

amen to that! I was really chasing Colin Richardson bass tone for a while until I've found out that the secret is splitting the signal to five tracks and using 5150 on one of them. truly opens up the tone and makes the bass a forefront instrument

I recently started doing this with amp sims just to hear what I can get. I landed on a sansamp on one track and JCM800 with V30 speakers and some filtering on another to land that ideal distorted sound I was looking for. I think in the future, I want to use one of my band member's amps to get that distorted bass sound that could blend well in the mix with a wall of guitars.

Hmm used a 6505+ through an OX top box once for bass and thought it sounded pretty cool. I always heard “no bass through guitar cabs cause you can warp and tear the speakers” from gear nerds online, might have to try this out for real

Are you using the re-amped tone as the full bass tone in the mix, like including the low end? Or do you blend in the dry DI for the low end and just use the re-amped tone for the more mid to high grit / distortion?

Great question as honestly you wouldn’t from an exact 1:1. I think the difference between recorded bass in the studio environment and what happens live is just too totally different things. Live I think just have fun with great amps and pedals. The room, the stage, the FOH, you name it are all going to be variables outside of your control anyway 🤷🏻‍♂️

A friend of mine sometimes used one of his guitar amps for live shows. Either a 6505+ or a JCM800. I remember him saying it gave him a really nice snarling bass tone

Honestly most guitar amps might not cut the mustard in a live setting on bass duty. Like the other comment I agree a 5150 or something really loud might be able to pull it off though. I typically find the idea of being able to take a tone that one gets in the studio and recreating it perfectly in a live setting a fallacy to begin with, so I recommend bass distortion pedals or bass head that can get it done. Our bass player has that little dark glass head and I can’t believe how loud and great it sounds for its size.
