The bead idea on the pin is ideal! I have used a glass bead though, because you can't see it next to the crystal prism. It seems to disappear next to the glass.

I had difficulty with finding pins to support the crystal prisms on my chandelier (which is dinky compared to yours) and was disappointed with the pin head size which went straight through the prism hole and was still too short for me to properly fit on the chandelier. So I went to an antique mall to see how the old chandeliers were made. To my surprise the prisms were held in place by a gold looking wire which can be purchased at a craft store by the spool like thread. Instead of a pinhead, they curled an end of the wire in what looks like a circle that was flattened with a hammer then the wire was bent and put through the prism hole. I ABSOLUTELY DID THIS and saved a ton of hair from falling out due to the stress of not finding long wires with big pinheads. Then I realized, way back in the day, there would not have been pinheads on wires. So really I duplicated an old assembly method without realizing it.

Looking at old photos I took before preparation work, you can see that there was definitely a round detail of some kind, I imagine possibly a flower to tie in the ones that I carefully removed from around the mirror, which I will also replace. I have also looked at other pieces similar online of how other grand salons may have looked.

Love the flowers in the circle. I wonder if beading pins, used to make jewelry, might be long enough for the biggest crystals. Inexpensive and available at least 3" long. Small heads, so you would need to use a small crystal bead to keep them from pulling through.

Usually floors like these are sanded after installation, even brand-new ones. They're never perfectly flat when installed, so sanding them is generally considered necessary. I'm sure these floors will look gorgeous once you've run a proper floor sander across and oiled them!

For the Chandelier, it may be worth going to the room above and pulling up some floor boards to expose the joists - they may need strengthening. Overtime some trades (electric/plumbing) may have cut through or weakened the joists, or the joists may need blocking and bracing. If there is any bounce in the floor of the room above - then check the condition of the joists mounting point at the walls - sometimes the ends rot off (especially if someone put cement render on the outside of the wall). Never use Cement in a Lime built Building, it will trap moisture and when the building moves seasonally, the cement is too hard to flex and will crack as the surrounding building moves - it is those cracks that then allow the water in and as cement is non-permeable, there is no way for the water to dry out, so the moisture spreads and you get penetrating damp. Either way your cracks in the ceiling suggest movement, so its worth investigating now before you add any more weight.
2 жыл бұрын
Paul. I did have the boards up when I did the en-suite and all looked good with the joists. The cracks are so hairline from where the light was lifted. Although we can monitor them I’m more than happy to leave them for the moment. Ps. Only seen lime used on the building.

Love the flower idea (with gold on the edges) in the circles….wonder if that variety grows on the château grounds & you can make a sort of paperweight or add a hook for keys for visitors/online people to purchase? There is a product that gilders and framers use to take molds to decorate mirror, I think it's animal glue and some form of powder, you can maybe find the recipe. It can be softened and pushed into shape after demolding or worked freehand. Have you also looked into scagliola ? It's basically animal glue, plaster and pigment keeded over and over and can be used a bit like plasticene and dries very hard. They use it to imitate marble as when you mix several batches of different tones you can then slice and mix them to make the 'marble' effect. I think it could be useful in this case or future cases and is cheap !

Well now as seeing as the shutters are getting painted and the wallpaper is still a unique puzzle piece of where to find the right one that will fit that room, I take it is a bit premature to think of what kind of window dressings would be used? I would think some kind of gold, perhaps sections of it somewhat sheer, to still let some light in and keep the room glittering?

Of course ‘keys’ is an ‘old’ idea…..maybe the small flower medallions above a series of hooks for the bedrooms or useful hallways to hang bags, clothing, utensils etc….just an idea to make it your subtle symbol for the château. Seems I’ve heard of ‘fabric boards’ which oversee natural fiber production in Europe…they may have outlets which produce half bolts at reduced prices. It pays to ask them actually since highlighting their facilities could be of benefit with so many renovations to numerous châteaus with wide distribution of vlogs! Yes, all takes time & your patience in this project is endless!
