A dead man has a conversation with God about the meaning of life.
RE-ENTRY is used with permission from Ben Brand. Learn more at interfilm.de.
A man dies in a traffic accident. In the nebulous realm of the afterlife, he gets into a conversation with someone who guides him on his way to his next incarnation.
But as they talk more, the man realizes that he is talking to no less than God himself. And God has an answer to the biggest question of life itself.
Written and directed by Ben Brand from a screenplay adapted by the short story THE EGG by Andy Weir, this stunning short drama is less a traditional narrative than a stunning meditation on the cosmos, interconnection, and the nature of life and death itself.
The themes are weighty and philosophical, but the filmmaking is dynamic, quicksilver and constantly in motion, with a stream of striking images that are free-associative in feel but expansive in breadth and depth. A desert in Namibia, the ruins of Mosul in Iraq and the urban and natural jungles of Thailand: shot over three different continents, these images and more aim to showcase the breathtaking range of humanity, and for the most part, succeeds in evoking a sense of wonder at the panorama of human existence in all its capability for good and evil.
Layered over this montage is the voiceover of the conversation between the man and what emerges as God in all their divinity and power. What unfurls between a tender and tough-minded -- and no less than an ambitious conception of life and death, and the ways that humankind is uniquely interconnected. It can be difficult for viewers to follow voiceover-heavy work, but the image-making here always pulls viewers along, and the questions and conflict emerging between man and God cohere into a majestic reveal of the cosmos beyond life and death that is breathtaking and audacious in its sweep.
The mysteries at the center of RE-ENTRY are no less than some of the greatest puzzles that humans will face, whether man or woman, rich or poor, devout or atheist or whatever identities intersect within us. And of course, there is no definitive answer. But what makes the perspective of this narrative so powerful is how it both asks us to embrace our fellow humans in a spirit of ultimate acceptance, but not by "looking beyond" difference. Instead, finding common ground is an act of love towards our fellow humans -- and perhaps the most profound way of loving ourselves.

Unfortunately organised religion has falsely promoted the notion that "death unites them at the end"-the real truth is that no one knows what happens after death. No one. But the other truth ...the one deliberately ignored by organised religion-is that "dying to self"..."dying before you die" ...is the true liberation that can occur-no physical death necessary to realise this.

@@surfinmuso37 I wouldn't dismiss the way humans have conceptualized death through spiritual practices like religion so easily. I'd argue that It's important for our society's mental health to have some kind of guiding spiritual principle. People can become nihilistic without it, then can dangerously become the judge of others, or "God" (Columbine shooters). And I wouldn't say that all religion does is "falsely" promotes "death unites us in the end". It's a lot more complex and rich than just that. What's contradicting about your comment is that "dying to self" is a theme present in organized religion that promotes liberation from "sin" (I'm using Christian terminology as it is prominent in the West). Sinning means missing the mark or aim, which basically leads to a bad life. To die to yourself is encouraged so that your life can be meaningful.

I said this the other week to someone. There is not a person who has ever lived on earth that hurt others, that did not hurt themselves far worse by doing so. No matter what act was done, the knowledge one has hurt others, in the end, we realise is our own undoing. I liked this short film very much. And there's enough evidence saying what is presented in it, may well be true.

Exactly. I think this is the only way of achieving true justice. I hate it when people say that they don't want to live the lives of the less fortunate. They wish that suffering upon someone else because they don't want to have to deal with it themselves. If they really cared, they would make the less fortunates lives better, so when they have to live their life, they will be better off.

Time is a function and applies to this universe but can be played with whereas energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Are you reffering to ancient sumaria? I spelled that wrong. I've spent the last 14 years devolping this understanding. It took me hours and hours of pondering and writing. It connected when I did acid after DMT. Something spoke to me. I first encountered this story back 4 years ago and heard it by the narration of "Mythology&Fiction Explained". I also found myself to stumble on it once every year, each with a different perspective ever changing likely because of experiences brought by the passage of time. Back then, I found the godly figure to be dark and has a false promise to the man, from which thinking that he would never get to the next phase if he keeps on being reincarnated back and forth. But now, I just noticed that what I thought about before could also be wrong, since it hints that the human race would come to an end at some time. Well it might not sound good but its better than having a false promise from an unknown cosmic entity. Also one might see it to be sad knowing that there's only you and no one else, but thinking back about it, that statement isn't far but just a parallel from the man's question about the meaning of life. With that said it just also shows us how to appreciate the present moment, and to be an audience unto knowing how one individual thinks and feel is good enough to symphatize or perhaps emphatize with others.

Finally, a God worthy of worship. All the pain we cause each other is literally our own selves harming our other selves - not God at all. A story written in a million chapters of the same autobiography, and each chapter is another lifetime. This one being will read them all, know them all, live them all, and be more for it. A shame the God of the Bible is not this God.

God talks with me since I was about 6 years old, and has been teaching me a view on the world and destiny very similar to this one. I wrote a book about this, Andy Weir did the same with The Egg, The Egg is spreading like wildfire. We are getting closer to the Truth, people. we're starting to become aware of our Oneness and that we all are THE One, the God of all Things. That centralized consciousness of al of us, has a plan for us. live or die - we are eternally safe in Divinity's embrace. Beautiful rendition of The Egg, tears of joy were shed.
