An ordinary day in suburbia is shattered by a gunshot sound.
SUBURBIA is used with permission from Antonio Orena-Barlin. Learn more at rotorstudios.com.
It's just an ordinary day when Joel arrives at a florist's shop to pick up his girlfriend on her first day of work. When he's there waiting in the doorway, a car careens down the street, but Joel thinks nothing of it.
But when he leads his girlfriend from the shop to their car, they hear a sound that could be a gunshot. Unsure of what he's heard, Joel sets off to investigate the sound... and walks right into a nightmare.
Writer and director Antonio Orena-Barlin's short drama is a tour-de-force of filmmaking, portraying its intense emotional situation over the course of an impressive 12-minute uninterrupted take.
Like other "oners," the single coordinated flow of action immerses the viewer in a particularly visceral way into the situation, highlighting the superb craft and powerful acting. We discover what the main character learns as he pieces together what's happened, and we share in the immediacy and anguish of his experience.
SUBURBIA was based on Orena-Barlin's real-life experience, and has won several awards during its festival run. While its sense of craft is undeniably excellent, it serves a gut-wrenching story that will break your heart by the film's conclusion.

After leaving this comment and thinking about this awhile I'm starting to believe this was a conscious decision of writing and direction to make a statement voicing the desensitization of urban gun violence in today's world. If so, and I'm really thinking it is, that is really powerful and haunting.

@@cangrejo5238 yes, if someone has a major bleed it takes precedence to compressions. Pump the heart and you just empty the blood volume quicker. MARCH applies in this case M - major haemorrhage, A- airway, R - respirations, C- compressions and H - hypothermia. The reality is without roadside surgery that AAV might be able to do with a thoracotomy to clamp the descending aorta this woman would have died regardless of actions taken.

Running is not good practice for EMTs. When there are more patients than resources, EMS crews have to triage. They triaged her as a black tag (dead, don't work her) and triaged him as a green tag (ambulatory, no life-threatening injuries). Even if she was the only patient, and you have four EMTs working her, traumatic cardiac arrests are notorious for poor outcomes (the patient stays dead or is brain dead). They had four other patients at this scene; people they might actually be able to help.

Something like this happened to me. I was at a summer camp and somehow dry ice got into the camp. (You can see where this is going) A few older kids made 3 dry ice bombs. First 2 the bottles were to weak and didn't explode. 3rd one didn't explode at first. So one kid went in there to difuse it. Halfway to it. ( They chucked them into the forest) It exploded. The camp went silent. Adults were rushing to the area of the explosion thinking it was a gunshot. One of the older kids who was watching but didn't get involved told me what happened. I was relieved that it wasn't a gun. So yeah that's how I thought I was about to die.

This short film "suburbia" is so incredibly real, I mean it's in the flesh real like it's really happening outside your home , I say this because this is what's going on in my neighbourhood, when you hear the sound of the shots, it's so frightening you also know that maybe a life is being taken... OMG, ,,, two thumbs to the writer and director here. The guy actor is great. Good looking too.

Who walks stupidly towards the gun fire and then ignores the people running away and then walks back to where the gun fire is coming from to call the police.

@@ericosborne4122 i can recall telling someone how i saved someone years ago and they were light nah sounds like you made it up. Its absolutely disgusts me to my core how cowardly some people are and its embedding into their nature. I agree a sheep would most definitely challenge anyone who would want to actually help.

@Dana Davison It is not being a hero to abandon your loved one to check on a stranger. Not at all. It is being very selfish to your loved one.

Walking in the middle of the street as a target? Calling the police in the open. Even animals take shelter/hide when feeling danger - survival instinct. Unreal

These events almost never happen in Australia. These are common everyday events in the USA. It may be anti-gun. But a Citizen with a firearm may have stopped this before 6 people were shot. The possibility is after the first - a Citizen may have mortally wounded the assailant. Took a bit of time before the Police arrived. Scary film because of perspective and acting.

The story is seemingly written primarily to be provocative. Most people will hide or run away from gunshots, unless you are a first responder of some type. Based on the comment, they accomplished that! Not up there as one of the better written stories in the Omeleto movies group though. Other than that, not too shabby.

Not really, as it hit her liver, which has as it has a very large blood supply. If it was a close range shotgun wound, the entry hole would have bigger than his hand because the shot spreads out somewhat out of the barrel.
