I have a VHS player, which is a retired rental machine from 1985. It's a heavy duty top loader and is enclosed in a sturdy case with tamper resistant screws, and with a carrying handle on it. They could be rented for a couple bucks a day. This was when VCRs were still quite expensive to buy, so renting one was an option.

Aw hell yeah I have watched enough vcr repair videos to get served this by the almighty algorithm. Great video! Who among us hasn't mistakenly removed some crucial grease from an old machine? Honestly helpful to me as I'm in the (year + long) process of repairing this Samsung VCR/DVD combo that I... Well I'm not gonna go into the embarrassing details but suffice it to say I made a mistake advancing a tape 'manually' trying to clean mold off of the reels and the tape ended up shredding inside that deck 😅 so basically a full deep clean and relube is in order bc every single spot of grease has shredded tape stuck to it. Lost cause means nothing to me. ALSO idk if anyone pointed this out of if you knew already but interesting fact I like to bring up any chance I get (which is not often), the phone dialing tones at the start of the Pretty Woman tape are remnants of the commercial duplication process. The master tapes would have certain information such as volume, format, and duration encoded in a dual-tone multi-frequency signal (the same signal format used for "touch-tone" telephones). Sometimes you can hear it at the beginning of a tape, sometimes it will come at the end, and sometimes it's not picked up at all! Kinda spooks me out sometimes even tho I know what it is!

I love this comment! So glad the algorithm brought you to my little corner 😊 it makes me feel better to know I’m not the only one who’s made a couple repair mistakes along the way 😭 Never heard about that! That's so cool man (girl)! Leave the capacitors alone, I do not think this is a problem on your unit. I had a probably mid-1990ies Sony which had capacitor problems, but yours is much newer, rarely used and looks good and clean. Often you can see broken capacitors when they leak, corrode or especially buldge the top (top should be flat on top, not rounded for 99% of all caps). I was shicked when you completly disassembled it but you got it together. The movement is probably not so smooth just because of the cheap and easy mechanism. But don't be afraid, you are doing fine, be careful, ask maybe especially when you do something on the power supply etc. Don't touch inside when it is operating and always plug it OUT when you work on it. It will also have power inside in standby mode etc., just to be sure. You know I always say if you dont do something, you cant break it. So everyone of us tinkerers or even professional repair guys will have done some mistake, broke something etc. So keep your energy and interest, and try it, even if you fail at some point, at least you learned something. Of course making things worse is not a good thing, and often it is better if you leave it alone rather than try to "improve" things if they are not broken. So think about what is really needed and go after specific issues, rather than start doing things that are maybe bad or unnesccassary. And dont look straight into the laser, when you openly work on DVD/CD drives.

The large capacitor is on the hot side of the power supply (input) - it’s more than likely the inrush capacitor to help smooth out the mains supply to the device. Be careful around that side of the power supply as the big capacitor can hold charge and give you a bit of a shock with the mains off.

Hi Yasmine, The noise and how to find it. Because the head is spinning around 1,800 rpm this can cause vibration issues and some parts of the plastic and chassis will start to vibrate at a certain frequency. First put a tape in and play then with your hand place it on vcr all over the case and put pressure on it to see if it stops the vibration? Could just be the case vibrating and needing tightening or dampening. If that doesn’t work remove the top case, connect your vcr to power supply using a circuit breaker for protection to prevent serious shock, use a wooden spoon and rubber gloves and go all over the plastic and chassis with the spoon putting pressure on to see if this stops the noise, again either tighten or dampen the vibration. Hope this is helpful to you. Great seeing someone so young embracing the good old tech.👍

The mode switch is easy to re-align.The main drive wheel has a hole on it on the underside it should have an arrow (sony models) or dot (other clones) indicating where the gear should allow the mode switch to be engaged. Just line the hole and dot to the protrusion post on the mode switch and it should slot in. From the video it looks like you got it in the right position if it was not the VCR would not engage in to play , FF or rewind and would just power off. Trail and error is going to be your biggest friend with vintage electronics as service manual hard to find, so you just have to logically use trail and error method (but be careful not to break anything) Good Job !!!!!!

I'm going to need to deal with my VCR in which both the take up reel and supply reel seems to have stiffened and ceased up. All the other parts are working just fine. It had sat idle for years and was working just fine when I last used it. After pulling 60 videocassettes from a dumpster on September 24, and then an additional 14 more from the same dumpster, coming from the same source on October 1, to go with the 21 others I had gotten previously from likely the same source on August 1, I have lots of tapes to check out. The ones from August 1, were mostly prerecorded children's and family friendly movie tapes, which included the Chuck Jones classic Rikki-Tikki-Tavi which I already have a DVD version of. And 8 once blank tapes with no labels leaving its contents a mystery. All but 2 tapes from the collection I got on September 24 were once blank tapes full of stuff recorded off the TV. Someone was a big fan of The X Files. They were recording every episode from the first 5 seasons. The 14 I got on October 1 were half prerecorded tapes and the other half of them were more former blanks holding more TV recordings. Many of these former blanks from all 3 finds are total mysteries because they came with no labels on them, so there's no telling what they all have.

I think I comment before I here on this channel. It’s great you like VHS and retro stuff. I repair electronics for over 30 years, the problem with VHS is servicing them. People forget there is a lot in them that makes these pictures and sound and you need the equipment to fix them. I still do fix them because I still got the equipment to do so but it’s getting harder because you can’t get the parts. You have to be careful buying secondhand machines because of the age and it will need a service. That’s why a lot of vhs demos on KZbin look bad because the machines are out of line and worn. You need to transfer your videos to media before it get to late. I’m still lucky because I own good machine with very low hour head count on them, but only used to transfer.
@YasmineCollects Жыл бұрын
Welcome back 😊 I do want to transfer my tapes! It’s sad that we can’t get new units anymore, I wonder if they’ll make new VCRs for hobbyists. They would probably be really expensive and cheaply made though. Seems like the plastic gears are one of the biggest nightmares when it comes to servicing

Basically any electronics has kapacitor and to replace it you would had to disolder it from the bottom then solder a new one and in that process you have to be cereful to not melt plastic or move or solder together any other components on accident. If you do so it may cause short circuit and kill the mainboard or just whole vcr. So if you never done soldering before i think you should take it to rapir shop and say what you need. Soldering is not as hard as it seems but yea for now that kapacitor looks alright to me when its bad you will see it leakind and having brawn stuff around it and mainboard.

Another vote on the Panasonic being okay, capacitor wise. From what I heard years ago, the issue was the formula / design was stolen from some top capacitor manufacturer. Then, multiple companies tried to replicate the capacitors and sell them more cheaply. The end product was badly made capacitors that went into a lot of electronic devices of the time (with lots of failures). That Panasonic of yours should be made with more genuine capacitors, so all "should" be good. With that said, all capacitors (as with most things in general) do deteriorate over time. So use and enjoy the VCR, until it stops working. Hopefully that stopping point will be years down the road. You can try fixing it after that.

That sound that you hear sound like a cracked or bent gear, or in some cases a gear clip c-CLAMP is broken and a gear is wobbling, and good you remove the Auto head cleaner they cause more problems than they solve, look for something bend or loose or misaligned and scrapping against something, should be addresses as with use it will wear down that part and cause transport issues. It sound like plastic on plastic, I would look at the supply and take-up gears, as it sound like pulse as the reels turn.

Don’t ever be ashamed of greasing the inner workings of your VCR’s. It is a perfectly normal hobby, to clean 🧼, grease, and take care of your VCR’s, and other electronics of interest. Radiotvphononut 📻 and Shango066 do videos on capacitor replacement in older vacuum tube radios 📻, record players, and TV’s 📺. So do many other KZbinrs, but these two are my favorite 😍. With the majority of these record players approaching 70 years old, the grease used on the mechanisms of them, actually turn to powder, and/or a gooey mess, like 👍 the consistency of tar. This makes it very difficult 😞 for the record player to make it through the change cycle 🔁. That’s pertains to record players, capable of playing a stack of records. Sorry 😞 about such a long comment, and the emojis. For being a woman 👩, you’ve got quite an interesting 🤨 hobby. Just give me a shout, if you’d like 👍. I just may know the answer. Your friend, Jeff.
