9:50 I already barely use my phone and my new flip arrives today and I’m so excited. This is the best thing I’ve noticed since having nothing to do on my phone- actually engaging more. Makes me more aware of how annoying it is when someone uses their phone in the middle of a conversation and doesn’t even notice if you stop talking

Out of all the probably 20-30 videos I've watched on the subject of removing social media, having a dumb phone, using physical media, this is by far the best one I've watched. It just feels so to the point and relatable in how you explain what it's like removing all that stimulus from your life. I feel like I'm actually learning something from this video unlike the other youtubers out there.

It’s SO much easier to get into a state of flow during any extreme sport or “life threatening scenario”, cause unlike with the … piano, when you bmx you fully focus on it, or u break something. Anyone else tested both kinds of hobbies ?
@LukeDashwood3 ай бұрын
this is very true, high stakes drive flow and can become a very easy pathway to finding flow in your life, however if you want to not only bring flow to these types of pursuits but also to things like cognitive work, hobbies like piano can help develop that : )

A little rant: I’ve technically begged my parents for a flip phone but all they do is laugh at me and (since pretty much everyone i know uses WhasApp) say that im dumb for choosing the “hard & expensive way for communication” Communication my ass lol everyone’s glued to their screens 24/7 and let me tell you that I’ve already got rid of social media apps (which made me extra lonely) but nothing helps since my parents control every aspect of my life so im stuck in the house, im 16 and already feel really unproductive and useless… sorry ik that was uncalled for but GOSH is jt frustrating, anws thankyou so much for your video and I’ll make sure to support your channel ! ^-^

I used to use my first phone, an LG Extravert 2 before the entirely unnecessary and sort of vindictive 3G shut down, and I tell you I was more focused on other things to do, such as tinker with my (at the time) recently delivered Orange Pi PC, help with felled trees in our property and troubleshoot stuff on my PC. Now I have a few smartphones I refuse to add a service to for the sake of singleplayer gaming and while I still do other things outside of social media, I did find myself using Discord a lot more often on the more up to date phone. I'm looking at Sharp's newer flip phones to remedy this (unlocked of course).

What a great video. I like that you went into the way you thought about your relationship to dopamine especially. Also, is your phone bedazzled bc that’s awesome lol. I just ordered myself an old Blackberry Classic q20 myself and I can’t wait. They still work for now in Canada and Asia and Europe I believe, but not for Americans. In the meantime, I’ve been trying to figure out how to restructure my daily routine for a better dopamine detox (given that I have smart devices everywhere) and so far, three weeks in, I’m seeing some progress already, though it hasn’t been a totally linear process. But I measure things over longer periods rather than day to day, and the difference is there and by many metrics. By the time the BB is here I hope I’ll be fully ready to be immersed.
@LukeDashwood2 ай бұрын
haha yeah it is bedazzled lol, had to bring back the whole 2000's aesthetic. I think it's great you don't look at the progress as linear because in my experience it never is, you only realise how far you've come when look back after a long time and see how different your life used to be. Hope all goes well :)

I have a small comment: If you are in college/education that require constant communication, this isn't going to work well. You need social media for chat groups, to reach friends, to networking easily,... You also need a phone to have notification: If a class is delayed, or room-change,... It sucks that in 2024 everybody assume you had a phone, and the infrastructure is build around that!
@LukeDashwood3 ай бұрын
I totally agree, and have found myself having to go back to my smartphone for this exact reason and having to use digital minimalism strategies to dumb down my phone as much as possible, maybe i'll make an updated video of how to turn a smartphone into a dumbphone :)
@littlemikasa34393 ай бұрын
I wonder if you still respond to questions/comments but I have a question, how is your social life then? I can imagine the rut of boredom and stuff in the beginning of using a flip phone, but how about the loneliness? Not truly something that seems it can progress since the human mind still needs connection, and I wonder if you have friends that like actually respond to your calls to go out or stuff, because it today's era it seems that one needs 4 months of pre-planning before one can meet with their friends... Anyway thanks for the honesty, amazing video
@LukeDashwood3 ай бұрын
My social life has shown dramatic improvements, i am an introvert by nature and if i can occupy myself i will, but when you are forced to confront your loneliness and lack of connection you more actively seek it and i've found that i actually have a whole side of myself that is quite extroverted haha. But i'd never know that if i never took the steps to bring it out. I completely agree with it being hard to organise things with friends in the current culture but what boredom does is it reduces your bar for what you would consider a friend. I used to barely talk to anyone at work because they weren't my "friends" but now i find myself striking up conversations with anyone just for fun and i've found more of a general feeling of community. hope this helps :)

Just got a flip phone and it’s a hard transition. This video is so good! I was shocked to see less than 10k subs 🤍 how do you deal with people not giving the energy and attention u give them? I’m really into “breaking the twitch” so I make sure to be present with people whenever I’m with them. I don’t ever get that energy back, so how do you deal with that? Thanks 🌻💗🦋
@LukeDashwood3 ай бұрын
great job on making the change! i would say that what other people do is out of your control and so you shouldn't focus on how they are reacting or their lack of reciprocation. Instead bring focus to the person you are becoming, which is someone that is more present with the people and world around them, and that itself is something to be proud of : )
