I like how he went around the fact that Caesar didn’t create the leap day, especially in 45 B.C.
@PopeLando
@PopeLando 2 жыл бұрын
Caesar did create the leap day. Although it began with a few hiccups, after 8CE it was fixed and settled and leap years happened every 4 years from then all. By 1582 the calendar was 10 days out of sync with the seasons (specifically the Spring Equinox was happening around 11 March instead of 21 March). If there had been no leap days at all, the calendar would have actually completed a complete cycle of the seasons, ie around 700CE Christmas would have been at the peak of northern hemisphere summer time, and it would have cycled back around to winter around 1420.

hello!! There are some things that should be reconsidered in this video: 1. It is true that the Maya and the Aztec calendars are very similar. BUT: the theory of the 2012 is based in the long count (baktuns, katuns, tuns, winals and days) and not the short count. The Azted only used the short count and not the long count, so yes, the Aztec calendar was weird to use (not only because it is not a calendar) 2. The Maya didn't have seasons, but their agricultural system was based on the change between the humid and the dry season, which relies at the same time in the solar year. Thus, it was important for them to have an adjusted calendar. 3. There are some theories that in Mesoamerica they had some kind of adjustment: The Mesoamerican solar calendars (and here I include both the Aztec and the Maya calendars) are base in a 18 month system (each having 20 days). That makes 360 years, to which a 5 day period was added to adjust it to the solar year (wayeb in Maya, nemonteni in Aztec). These were considered dark days. Some experts argue that sometimes, an additional day was added to this period so the adjutment could be done. This has not been proved in a satisfactory way yet, and it is still a vivid academic discussion, but it is worth considering it. 4. Yep, the Maya did never say the world was going to end in 2012. Thanks for the video!! A Mayanist

@ibbi30
@ibbi30 7 жыл бұрын
Not a historian or archaeologist here, but the term "stone age" was created to describe European archaeological cultures and is not a very useful description of other societies since they developed differently. Say you know that a set of inventions generally appeared within a society in the bronze age in Europe. Then me telling you that a specific European society was a stone age society tells you something useful, that they probably didn't have said set of inventions. You can't make the same deduction with a pre-Columbian society. While he is technically right a much more practical term would have been f.e. pre-modern.
@ZeroneDY
@ZeroneDY 7 жыл бұрын
Stone age is a technological definition specifically referring to a civilisation that has not developed metallurgy and has absolutely nothing to do specifically with Europe, but the whole human race. Archaeologists refer to the Maya as a stone age culture.
@ibbi30
@ibbi30 7 жыл бұрын
ZeroneDY A quick search of wikipedia reveals this: "The terms "Stone Age", "Bronze Age", and "Iron Age" were never meant to suggest that advancement and time periods in prehistory are only measured by the type of tool material, rather than, for example, social organization, food sources exploited, adaptation to climate, adoption of agriculture, cooking, settlement and religion." And this: "While it is possible to speak of a general 'stone age' period for the whole of humanity, some groups never developed metal-smelting technology, so remained in a 'stone age' until they encountered technologically developed cultures. The term was innovated to describe the archaeological cultures of Europe."

Yacqub Ma They sacrificed humans to gods because they believe that it will stop the end of the world (read up on their mythology for more on that). They also believe that the death of a human will always be replaced with the life of one. In other words, they kill humans because they believe that when a human dies, they just take a quick stopover to the afterlife before popping up as another human, that's their view on things. As for the metal bit, like Grey said, their civilization wasn't advanced enough to progress from the Stone Age to the Metal Age because they didn't know about metal. But that doesn't mean they're ignorant, what if somebody called you ignorant for not knowing much about that you didn't even know existed, huh? I rest my case.

It's weird to think that calendars are essentially arbitrary when it comes to time itself (as in space-time). I always thought that every year is the same year just called a different one, but when you really think about it, time never stops, and we could live fine physically without a calendar. That's not to say calendars aren't useful, because they help with organization in a cyclic timeframe, but it's interesting to think that calling days "Mondays" etc doesn't have any significance to itself.

All the people way back then (and trust me, I was one of them) who said that the Mayan Calendar didn't account for Leap Years didn't even know how the calendar was recorded. In short, December 21st 2012 lined up with 13.0.0.0.0 on the Mayan Calendar, more commonly referred to as the 13th (14th?) Ba'ak'tun (sp?) by the Maya. Either way, it didn't NEED to account for Leap Years.

He explains it in the video. The Maya counted days the same as us, we just add an extra day every 4 years because technically a year is 365.25 days. Leap days account for the lost .25 and add up to a whole day every 4 years. This keeps the calender synced to seasonal events so that they are the same "day" every year. The Maya just let if naturally cycle instead using the leap day system to keep it "synced" because they didn't give a fuck.. they were the original "Like a boss".

While it is "Maya" and "Native American", you're kind of right. The thing is, it's not something carved in stone (that round thing is Aztec), it's a system (like the way we use the words January and February and have no idea how many days a month should have). The way it works is, and I'm rounding here, is that they first say how many 4-century groups (called B'akt'uns), then 2-decade groups (K'int'uns), then years, months, and days. Dec 20, 2012 is 12.19.19.17.19 in that system, (Cont'd)

I'm a little bit of an expert on calendars in general, and the Mayan calendars, but it had never occurred to me, nor have I ever seen it in my research, that the Maya etc didn't follow the seasonal year because they just don't have seasons. Excellent point!

that 1/4 of a day is just there to account that a 24 hour day isn't really 24 hours, but 24 hours and 59 seconds, which roughly adds 5.986(bunch of numbers) hours per year until the leap year which adds up the resulting extra hours into an extra day.

FOR THE HORDE! However, there's nothing particularly "cycles within cycles within etc." about the Mayan calendar any more than there is for our base-10 counting system. All they're really doing is counting days, only in a different base. They normally used a base-20 counting system, making them smarter than Europeans who only counted on their fingers. Only one place in the calendar's counting system is base-18, probably because this made the approximate length of a solar year a round number.
@stensoft
@stensoft 8 жыл бұрын
+Lytrigian There's nothing smart or special on base 20, it was quite common in Europe as well (and the US: ‘Four score and seven years ago…’). One remnant still existing in English is the -teen counting between 10 and 20 (with completely different words for eleven and twelve from another quite commonly used base: 12).
@the-chillian
@the-chillian 8 жыл бұрын
+Jan Sten Adámek The joke you're not getting is that Europeans count only on their fingers, while Mesoamericans can also use their toes. Europeans would occasionally group by 20s, but they never used it as a numerical base. The use of -teen is not a remnant of a base-20 counting system.

I've read in a science/history magazine that at least one of the cycles in the calendar followed the stars. By not having extra days put in, the stars' alignments didn't fit the calendar anymore so they adjusted it by adding 20 odd days.

The extra day in a leap year makes it so that the Gregorian calendar resolves itself every 4 x 365 days or a cycle of 4 years. Many ancient calendars did not add the extra day but still kept track so that they resolved every 4 x 365 YEARS or a cycle of 1460 years.

The 7 days of our week are based on 7 planets (Sunday sun, Monday moon...etc Saturday Saturn". 52 complete weeks are in a year. The Aztecs held a new fire ceremony every 52 years because the least common multiple of the 260 day tzolkin and 365 day year (earty) orbiting the sun is the number of days in 52 years.
