Why was Berry fired?

I don't know exactly. The story, as told by Walter Berry is, that he sang the dress rehearsal well and afterwards - exhausted, but happy - said to Karl Böhm (jokingly!) "Phew, I'm not sure if I can pull this off again!" Karl Böhm then allegedly took this literally and decided with Wolfgang Wagner to replace him at the opening night with Theo Adam, who was supposed to sing later performances. Berry was deeply hurt and humiliated and immediately left Bayreuth and ruled out singing in Bayreuth ever again. Decades later Walter Berry obtained a recording of the dress rehearsal, re-listened to it and was very happy and proud about how he sang Sachs on that one occasion. I still hope that I can obtain this recording somehow.

@Yves_Ka a friend of mine was about to contact Walter Berry's son about this, just before he died unexpectedly in January 2022 (a few months after his mother)
