Are you going to strip and recycle the wire? Some good salvage value there to recoup some cost & put to the new wire/project.

I have no clue about sailing but I do love looking at boats, & ended up stumbling down the youtube rabbit hole to this channel which is more than a little bit addictive, following along with the rebuild even if I don't understand half of what's going on. I especially love how both girls aren't scared of getting their hands dirty, & seem to have inherited Ty's MacGyver gene...... but Madi's reaction to her new car was priceless. In a world of social media, self-entitled, ungratful brats, she's a fantastic reminder that not all kids are like that nowadays....... also Kim & Syd are pretty badass as well 👍👍👍👍

Dear Dauntless Crew: Did you know . . . that you're all just amazing? Generous, caring, thoughtful, respectful people. The example of the simple phone call with Kim which I believe is a typical conversation between two people who are on A TEAM moving with purpose for A GOAL that has already been discussed dozens of times and no-one gets blindsided with $ or time by the other one. Goodness, what a refreshing and honest glimpse into a healthy relationship. I'm sure there are trials, tribulations, and like all life, there is going to be some 'suck'. The way the two of you work through the suck and turn as a team to face the oncoming tasks at hand is inspiring. And from what little I know, you've managed to raise some pretty special young adults too. Blessings, FWFS. -MG

If the wire isn’t Tinned and waterproof insulation once it gets salt water on it copper sucks the water inside the jacket of the insulation and the wire. My company had to re design a subway control for a location that got flooded with sea water. Even with the best wire it only last another 8-10 mos and they where in every other night trouble shooting intermittent shorts.

I'm so happy for Madi. Our daughter fell on hard times, through no fault of her own. Fortunately, my wife and I were able to 'sponcer' her a car very similar to what you got Madi. Our daughter's plan was to repay us. A year later, she wanted to give us a check. Our response was, thanks, but consider it a gift. Her reaction was just as warming and rewarding as Madie's was to you. Talk about a 'parent feel good moment'. Cheers

Electrician here. You should perform a megger test on old cables. Megger testing checks insulation and conductor viability as well can check for good/bad electrical connections depending on how you perform the testing. Needs a 500V megger test for old cables for uses under 480V. (2500V testing for anything above that on a consumer level) Industrial uses can get higher, but no individual would ever need anything higher than 2500V. Megger testing is considered a voltage "pressure" test.
@louwilliams9879 Жыл бұрын
That is why tinned wire is the way to go. It is more expensive but it doesn’t corrode like that. Also your meter doesn’t provide enough current for that size wire to tell you what level of voltage drop you will see in use. Go with tinned wire and you will be much more comfortable with the future.

I saw the repowering and thought they already did that... two new engines. Nope, this is power distribution... way too many wires in there, yup cut them out. Oh, but you're going to replace them. Hope you can simplify that a bit. Course, from my POV, you guys are insanely rich. ;) I could but buy one of those boxes in any 12 month period and still keep up with the normal boat stuff, I would be the one putting nav lights and a laptop charger on and gong sailing... well ok, I did do a bit more than that on our 23foot boat, theres some interior lights (4?) and a fridge.

You got Zero resistance because of the way you measured it. You were not measuring the entire resistance of the cable only a portion of the the strands that make up the cross section of the cable. You are also using a meter with insufficient accuracy and sensitivity to accurately make this measurement. ALL Cable has resistance. A copper 4/0 Cable even in pristine condition will have about .491 milliohms of resistance per every 10 feet of length when measured termination to termination. Resistance is directly proportional to the length as well as the resistivity of the material of construction and inversely proportional to the diameter of the cable.
@shawnchurch316 Жыл бұрын
You are spot on, I was going to bring up the same issues. There is also the temperature coefficient of copper which many people forget to take into consideration. When performing verification of existing cabling it is best done with a load on it. I have never seen a boat manufacturer install any wiring that actually impressed me or was even satisfactory. Marine installation should use properly sealed terminations on all electrical connections. With the truly sealed terminals available on the market a terminated power cable should be able to withstand a month of being underwater without any water intrusion into the conductor.
@Ulrik_Hejdenberg Жыл бұрын
I'm third to that 😎 with a regular Multimeter you will get zero just a few copper straws leading all the way. This does not mean that you can put on any load! You have to measure loss under load.

Sons = "Tough Shit, Buddy". Daughters = "Not your fault, Baby" #2 Reason boats burn is an old or faulty wiring harness. #1 Reason is a fire that started away from but close to the boat. Josh is the only electrician in existence that it doesn't seem to matter when his time is wasted. He must be trying to become a future son-in-law.

Am surprised you can't pigtail a foot or two of wire onto each connection. They wired that boat when it was in two halves - top and bottom - for a reason. Is there marine wiring that isn't exposed to humidity and salt over time? I think it's the nature of the Beast which is why marine cable is rated as such. To my mind no shielding guarantees a perfect seal over time, heat, aging, cracking, etc. If a wire starts to heat-up (resistance) at any time over 20-years, you a) want the current turned off IMMEDIATELY, and b) an alarm telling you where is the problem. Tough.

do you have a Diff-o-Jump type A en B on your boad ?. Diff-o-Jump differential switches are placed at the beginning of the lines and protect against impermissible leakage currents. What is the difference between residual current circuit breaker and earth leakage circuit breaker? Conclusion. Both ELCB and RCCB are used for the same purpose, i.e. to provide protection against electric shocks. But, their operating principle and wiring connections in the system are different. ELCB is connected to phase, neutral and earth wires, while RCCB is connected to phase and neutral wires only
