Years ago we were looking for a specific boat that was imported from Europe. I was on a business trip and got a call one had come up for sale in Florida ! So we flew from the pacific NW to West palm Beach, drove to the storage marina where we met the broker. Within 10 minutes I whispered to my wife “this is not it “. So off we went to KeyWest and salvaged the trip !

Megan, I saw your video about your eye and my husband has a similar growth, so I showed him the video and made him go to the dermatologist. In his case it was benign, but they did find a few other spots that needed to be removed so thank you for talking about it-sailors need to take care of their skin always! A funny aside-my husband stays so covered up when we sail that the dermatologist said to him “you’re so pale, do you live here?”(SW Florida) 😂

Good to know or be reminded to stay with in your realm. Being a plumber, I was always amazed how people will spend $$$$ because they refuse to deal with poop even if it's their own. I am talking into a couple thousand is not a problem when it comes to poop bubbling out of the ground outside the house or flowing out of the shower drain onto the bathroom floor. love how this post says 0 comments, yet i can see 27 comments. thanks youtube for your great code.. as for the subject matter, doesn't all this just ultimately affect the overall value of the boat being sold, i mean, literally i have seen youtubers fix everything, so i think your statement towards the end is the key, "honest appraisal of your own skills, and what your willing to do or deal with" but i think it also boils down to your budget.. if you have 10 million in the bank, then i guess your skills and what your willing to deal with means very little. but if you are trying to find something with a 10k budget, then guess what? your skill level and willingness to do things matters greatly. am i right in this?
@TheOKellys Жыл бұрын
you are right. You can fix ANY boat...even if all that stands is the mast. It is just a question of time and money and either of those will boil down to resources and resourcefulness.....and those are true limits.

Mold is my top priority of smell. Especially due the unhealthy medical conditions it can cause in both shorter and longer run. Larger patches of mold in different state is warning sign. Example if it’s black mold, then it’s a no go. Even if it can be sanitized, it raises awareness of poor maintenance.

I had never thought about the biological vulnerability of a balsa core. They even use it in the floor of one of the years of Corvette. The thought of a little "oops" going unnoticed but then becoming a growing weak spot definitely cancels the concept of balsa boats for me. I also never knew that single-skin FRP boats existed. I thought they ALL used a foam core. PS I realized that a foam core (using, among other products, the super-rigid core mat. I've felt that stuff, it's like wood) would be something I wanted for many reasons, including thermal insulation. With modern solar and hyper-SEER air conditioners available, one can have whatever "weather" one wants below decks, most especially with a very well-insulated boat. (Thurston Howell III voice) Imagine the pleasure of having an army of climate servants at work 24/7 to ensure your sailing and living comfort, lovey! Now there are a few more things I will be watching Nick and Megan pore over when they are choosing a purchase candidate! I think the the O'Kelly's may find a boat in what are considered the worst market conditions and worst season to do so. Diligence trumps trends every day!

Very informative about "Taco-ing" a sail boat. I had never heard anything like that. I watched a video of "Travel Sketch" where their boat is breaking at the exact places you mentioned on the front cross bar and was wondering about your thoughts on it. Do you think they are pulling their sails to tight and causing the boat to "Taco" or just bad construction?
@matthewsellers82 Жыл бұрын
It's usually someone overtightening standing rigging.
@mojoneko8303 Жыл бұрын
I wasn't familiar with the term "Tacoing" a boat. Seems like that would be more likely to occur on a catamaran or trimaran than a mono-hull and how well the beams that connect the hulls are built and attached. I am familiar with the term 'Bananaing" a boat from bow to stern. Seems to be a bigger issue with lightly built boats or boats with structural defects or damage with mono-hulls anyway. I don't have a lot of experience with cats or trimarans. I spent several years helping a guy in Alaska build a 40 foot catamaran using the West Epoxy method but never got a chance to go sailing on it. ☹ Good luck with the boat search. Thanks for the video. Search On!

Interestingly I was at a boat show locally and curiously took a gander at a Fountain Pajot 42. Man it was tiny and the quality of the build was surprisingly low quality in my opinion. The predominant internal materials gave me the impression I was standing in a boat separated by kitchen joinery used to make rooms. Blatantly obvious mastic seals where panels met the hull…. How hard is it to hide these? The boat was overwhelmed with the smell of fibreglass and spaces were so narrow it was difficult to move about. I’d say some budget airlines designed the layout it was so jammed. Same thing with a bunch of monohulls. And they were all new!

At this point, for us, for what we are looking for...probably no balsa. Never say never, but it would have to be perfect. I definitely don't want to condemn balsa. It is successfully used in many production boats. But when you get to the lighter builds like we are looking for, the skins get very thin and a bit more fragile.
