Very interesting. I have several ways of cooking: Trangia, small folding twig stove, a grill from a toaster oven to just lay on a fire, UCO flatpack, and just a Klean Kanteen in the fire to make hot water for Mountain House, but this is also an interesting idea. Thank you for sharing. Be safe, and enjoy the forest!

Sweet! I love your modifications. I'll head over to Home Depot and try to find those parts. Thank you! For those who can't find the stove. I just purchased the Sterno stove on Amazon for about $10 including shipping. I'm kinda kicking myself just a little bit now because I recently paid like $75 or so for the Firebox nano kit (I think it was the nano). But I think I still would have spent the money on that. Granted I got the leather case for it and the pad that it sets on as well. The Firebox is what I put in my bugout backpack for wood burning outdoors since it's so small. I plan to use the Sterno with chafing fuel indoors for emergency cooking during hurricanes (I live in Galveston).

Helpful hint on the vacuum bags. Make them a little long. When you open them, you can reuse it again a couple times. This can save on the waste and expense of the bags. I like the idea of sealing the pre soaked charcoal. I’m generally not a fan of it, but this is a practical purpose depending how you prep.👍😁

Smash the brickets (don’t pulverize, just smaller chunks), helps shorten the prep time for cooking.

I like cheap stoves/grills because I like to stash them at locations I frequent. This way I'm not too disappointed if they are found.

I buy sterno stoves where ever I find them. I use as is or mod to hold my penny stoves. I haven't used wood as fuel yet however with your ideas I see this future mod coming up soon. Weather is changing no longer 120 f outside anymore so will be going out along the Colorado river soon with my grand kids. Excellent vid very instructional, thanks.

Thank you for informative video, love the idea of turning this great little camping stove into a grill with small modifications. Going to the hardware store to make changes in mine. Really good instructions & video.

I picked one up at least two years ago, maybe longer. I don't grill on mine, but I have been using mine as a wood stove. I have a skillet that fits nicely on top, and so do cups and small pots, of course. It does a good job. I build the fire in a steel pie pan that takes the heat just fine. I can't see myself carrying charcoal into the woods, but I like the idea of being able to add levels to the stove. I wonder if anyone actually uses these stoves with Sterno?
@ashesofthephoenix46055 жыл бұрын
That's what I do too. I set it in my camp fry pan and start a fire inside it. But I am gonna attempt to use charcoal in it cause my fires always burn out too fast in it, but still experimenting on it.

Thanks for taking the time to make the video. You have some really good ideas there and I too agree so many of the items out there are way overpriced. You don't have to spend a lot to have some of the things you need. Though I will admit I use my Firebox stoves and love them

Rather than the galvanized mending plate, why not just use a left over piece from your veggie grill topper?
@stevenordstrom43477 жыл бұрын
DannyH , the grill topper is very light gauge aluminum. It would never stand up to the direct heat of coals. Thanks for the comment!
@cynthiamoon3725 жыл бұрын
I thought the grill topper material was stainless steel. If there is a concern about using a galvanized mending plate due to the hazardous fumes from burning off the galvanizing, a good overnight soak in vinegar will take care of that.

typically mending plates are galvanized. I would be concerned about fumes for that burning off.
@stevenordstrom43477 жыл бұрын
PAoutdoors, all the zinc plating burns off in a couple uses. That should resolve any concern.

Typically, those framing plates are zinc-coated or galvanized. Be cautious of the emitted fumes when heated; those fumes go right to your food.
@stevenordstrom43477 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. As I mentioned in a previous response, "Metal Fume Fever" is associated with welding galvanized parts for prolonged periods in an enclosed environment. Those conditions do not exist here. Additionally, a couple of burns took the thin layer of zinc plating off the part, and the actual cooking surface is stainless steel.

Thanks for the observation. "Metal Fume Fever" is generally associated with welding galvanized parts for prolonged periods in an enclosed environment. The only piece that is galvanized is the mending plate. A couple uses burned it all off. The grill surface is aluminum...

While I think its a good idea ( I modified my Sterno stove like this15 years ago) I have to say that the narration was to be kind, mind - numbingly boring, I found myself wanting to reach down the narrator's throat and pull the words out. I must admit I opted out about half way through.
