That's the correct way to do it, alway bed bonnets with a good strong ratio sand and cement mix ,4 sand to1 cement and not 3 to 1 as a lot of people recommend, do what this man is doing but when you bed one bonnet nail it and don't push it right down onto cement bed until you put the next bonnet on as the vibration of nailing may cause the cement to drop

3 and 1 above wall plate idealy with added sbr , brick pointing , bonnets, hips, ridges you name it , anything less will fail in time

Just wondered whether you have ever been asked by architects etc. to set the mortar bed underneath the bonnet back an inch ? I know I have and apparently gives a shadow effect, not sure it makes that much difference really.

I wouldn't be happy with that finish if it was my house. Why can't he take five seconds longer and finish smoothing the mortar?

That's obviously not finished. He'll wait for the mortar to go off and brush them off. You can't do that while it's wet

I’ve stated above that some architects ask for the mortar underneath to be set back by an inch, not smoothed off at the tail of the bonnet anyway. The mortar underneath the bonnet then weathers better and produces a shading effect, each to there own I guess.
