Enrico Colantoni seriously gives one of the most underrated performance ever: He has to 1) Give exposition 2) Be the front man for an alien race whose goofiness drives the plot 3) Be the anchor for most emotional scene. The scene where he says how they've discovered lies "at some great cost" in a way that's funny but hints at something darker is one of the great tonal balances I've ever seen an actor do.

Fun fact, the way the aliens talk and move is all based on his audition, he used a vocal exercise in which you hit all octaves. Casting and the director when on to show the other actors playing the aliens how the cadance was suppose to go

When Gwen asks the Thermians about Gilligan's Island and they respond with "Those poor people..." *I DIED.* And then on the flip-side, who would have thought that having Doctor Lazarus say the "By Grapthar's Hammer" line - with feeling - for the first time, would actually put a lump in your throat? There are so many quotable lines from this. And interestingly, many Star Trek fans put this near the top of their favorite Star Trek movie lists, even though it's not a Star Trek movie.

Still to this day my favorite line from this movie is "Lets get out of here before one of those things kills Guy" This was Missi Pyle's first movie, one of the things she remembers is that Alan Rickman would eat lunch with the rest of the cast rather than eat alone in his trailer like most big actors. Sigourney Weaver wore a blonde wig and fake bust, and from what I read she would leave the set wearing them when she could. She also said she started to think like a blonde by the end of the movie. (I think this interview was from the extras on the dvd) Patrick Stewart on Galaxy Quest "I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.’ And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans."

Hey Daniel and Sam, another aspect of the move is Alan Rickman’s character realizing how much his character and his performance impacted those around him. --- It's one of the highlights of the movie, it really impacts when he says the line he hates the most. ---- He does it with the most feeling he's ever done, that really hits home.

Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) auditioned for the part with most of the alien quirks (don't think he was responsible for the untranslated Thermian language).- the walk, the clap, the laugh - that's all his doing. The other alien acttors and extras had "alien school" every morning so they'd fit in.

This parody of Star Trek is written so that non-fans can enjoy it as well. Not only does it spoof the franchise, but it also pokes fun at the celebrity rumors from the cast members. Knowing what is being spoofed adds layers to the nostalgia value in this respect - from show to bloopers to behind the scenes trivia.

Galaxy Quest has absolutely everything, amazing cast, great story, it's hilarious without "making fun" of the subject and somehow at the same time deeply emotional - a real gem. If you want to see Sigourney Weaver in yet another role that's again completely different and with Alan Rickman again I would recommend - Snowcake. The role was written with Alan Rickman in mind and it was him to recommend and later bring on board Sigourney - a role I would never-ever could have imagined her and man, was he right. The two mostly cary the whole movie and they crush it. It's not a well known movie and a low budget production but it's great.

Long before Galaxy Quest, there was Visit to a Weird Planet Revisited, a short story in which William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and DeForest Kelly, are acting on the Enterprise set at Desilu studios. During a scene in which they are standing on the transporter pads, with beaming effects to be added later, they suddenly find themselves in the transporter room of the real Enterprise, in the future, in space. The story proceeded from there, with a very similar plot line.

You mentioned how good Sarris' costume was. This movie's special effects are from the famed Stan Winston Studio known for such movies as A.I., Aliens, Avatar, Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands (1990), Invaders from Mars, Iron Man, Jurassic Park series, Pearl Harbor, Predator series, The Terminator series, The Thing (1982), The Time Machine (2002), and War of the Worlds (2005). The ship Protector bridge was even designed to shake making it much more realistic than shaking the camera effects.

That was its biggest problem when it came to the theatrical release. The marketing was so incredibly poor that nobody knew what it was, and it looked cheesy as hell. That has been one of the big complaints from the actors as to its poor initial performance. The opening weekend sucked, but as word of mouth got out and people began to understand what the movie was about, it stayed number 1 for four weeks straight.

I hate to be on the Rickman bandwagon, but many actors could not have sold the character of Dr. Lazarus so well; his utter disdain and hatred of his strapline - "By Grabthar's hammer" - turned into a heartfelt delivery to soothe a dying alien, it's extreme talent. Just a quick compliment - I love your reactions, guys. Keep it up. Don't forget 'Tech Sergeant Chen' - played by 'Fred Kwan' - is played by a white actor. Just something else that adds to the film's enjoyment for me.

Jason (Tim Allen) is a parody of William Shatner who was known for somewhat hogging the spotlight. He also famously once went off on a fan and yelled at him to get a life and that Star Trek was just a TV show. On the show Kirk was also known for getting his shirt ripped/taken off. Alexander (Allen Rickman) is a parody of Leonard Nimoy who initially disliked being typecast as Spock. He even wrote a book called I Am Not Spock. Later, he softened a bit and wrote a book called I Am Spock. Guy (Sam Rockwell) is a parody of the red-shirted extras on the show who would often get killed before the titles. In fact, that's where the term "red shirt" for disposable cast members comes from. When Jason is facing the rock creature and Guy tells him to try to make some sort of rudimentary lathe(?), that's a reference to a Star Trek episode where Kirk had to fight a reptilian alien and he built a crude cannon from the stuff he found. It would be impossible for the nose of the ship to scrape the wall like it does because the wings would hit first. Even if the ship were turned at an extreme angle, only the tip of the nose would touch the wall. It would also be impossible for the Thermians to build a working Omega-13 device without knowing what it does. The only way that would be possible is if they had actual plans for a working version of it, but since it's a fictional device from a TV show, such plans don't exist. You can't just look at a photo of something, build a replica and have it work, unless you know what it does and know how to make such a device yourself. Since the Thermians copied everything from the TV show, why aren't they all wearing Galaxy Quest uniforms? One small detail that I really liked is that all of Saris' men looked like they came from the same species as him. How many sci-fi movies have you seen where the leader of the bad aliens looks like they're a different species than their crew?

They get some fun digs at Star Trek and its fandom. The starship runs on Beryllium spheres instead of Di-Lithium crystals (Beryllium follows Lithium in the periodic table), the Transporter always having problems like the "Digital Conveyor", the Captain losing his shirt like Captain Kirk does during fight scenes, and the female character just barely above set dressing for the show. Also the trope of the Captain developing a love interest in many episodes. Fans numbering every episode was first done by Trekkers.

Hey Daniel and Sam. What movie is complete without an awesome villain as you mentioned the attention to detail with the villain is next level. ------- I totally love the wings on his back and how they flex when he gets angry. -------- What a great movie and a great reaction.

feel like it is heavily inspired by the antagonist from "the last starfighter"

IIRC, there was a DVD of this where there was a second soundtrack where everyone spoke Thermian.

This was one of the movies where I think alot of people weren't expecting much but were very pleasantly surprised. I love this movie. The entire cast was fantastic.

It´s funny to me how the best joke in the film either gets no response from reactors or cut entirely. The setup is great, first they establish that Guy played a red shirt character in the show that died before the opening credits. Then they go to the planet and he freaks out about being a red shirt character in real life, not even having a ´real name´. The others try to calm him down and remind him he´s a real person. Then the punchline. They see the aliens viciously murder one of their own and Gwen immediately goes ´we have to get out of here before these things kill Guy!´. She´s not worried about herself or the other main cast, the only one in her mind whose on the chopping block is Guy. And the way Sigourney Weaver delivers that line just kills me.

In the chompers scene if you look at Sigourney Weaver's lips you'll see that she was actually saying something a bit different there at the end...

One of the fangirls (when Jason and Gwen kiss at the end) was Joey Lauren Adams from "Mallrats" and "Chasing Amy."

About Guy, Sam Rockwell's character. I don't know if you noticed that at the end, everybody got shot, except him! So his fear was not justified, I mean his fear of being an expendable side character who would get killed off first. :-)

Someone has probably already mentioned this but, after all his fears about dying as an unknown extra, Guy is the only human member of the bridge crew not to be shot before the activation of the Omega 13.

So, what did KZbin object to this time? Welcome back to the best "Star Trek" movie that Paramount didn't make. BBC America broadcast this multilayered drama+comedy movie that marked the transition between Friday night and Saturday morning. "Galaxy Quest" is my "Up On The Roof"/"chase The Blues away" movie: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqawYp5jiJ1ppKc Did anyone notice that the ship's computer only talks to "Lt. Tawny Madison"?

Had doubts about Tim Allen in a leading role but this movie is comedy gold. Also, surprisingly solid visual FX for a satire film.

In 1989, William Shatner hosted Saturday Night Live. He had a scene where he was at a Star Trek convention asking questions and he finally had enough. He snaped at the audie😢nce "get a life, move out of your parents basement, kiss a girl". He then realized who he was talking to and said "that's what the evil captain Kirk of episode 5 would have said, I love you all"
