Fun Fact: The dance scene in the beginning of the movie was choreographed by Paula Abdul. Paula Abdul remembers being a Laker girl when she got the call that she would be choreographing the 1988 film "Coming to America." During that time, Abdul was choreographing both the Laker girls and Janet Jackson. She was a girl who was very high in demand back in the 80’s.

She did the choreography for that scene, but it didn't quite go down that way. Paula was a student of Debbie Allen (sister of Phylcia Rashad) and wife of former Laker Norman Nixon. She later became a Laker girl where she met Jackie Jackson who connected her with his sister Janet. Later Janet found out she was having an affair with her brother and felt betrayed, so she severed ties. Paula then started dating Arsenio Hall who just so happened to be best friends with Eddie Murphy. She's had an accomplished career, but had some connections along the way.

It’s still a classic in my opinion, and I wish more people would react to it.

Fun Fact: For the movie's 30th anniversary a few years ago, an independently operated McDonald's in Chicago "dressed" as McDowell's for Halloween. The owner changed the sign, the menu and the employee uniforms. It was brilliant. Also, James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair would go on to voice Simba's parents in "The Lion King" (1994). In case anyone was wondering: Eddie Murphy and the movie did get permission from McDonald's to use their likeness and even got to use one of their restaurant locations for the McDowell's scenes. Sometime later the restaurant became a Wendy's before it was all demolished and the location became the site of a condo.

Awesome reaction. I have seen this movie in theaters in 1987 and some 100 times thereafter. It is one of my favorites of all time. An awesome must see movie that I personally recommend and am 1000% sure that you should see when going down the Eddie Murphy rabbit hole is the severely underrated movie, "Life"., which also co- stars Martin Lawrence. This movie is far more poignant than you would expect!

I grew up with Eddie Murphy movies, so his name was just a part of my culture from the age of 5. The Golden Child, Beverly Hills Cop, and Trading Places were staples on VHS when it was a brand new technology. I could quote his 1-liners before I could ride a bike.

This was great to see another classic that I loved as a kid with you both! The sequel to this movie was made only a short while ago, and I thonk it's a genuinely fun and good sequel worth watching. I think the lack of time playing with the fish out of water aspect to Hakim was to not undervalue him as an educated prince, much as he's pretty clueless in America, I think they wanted to avoid making him feel too goofy geting used to things, and then there's the usual culprit of pacing and cutting things out. Great video! Happy New Years to you both!

Eddie Murphy and Arsenio each played 4 characters. Cuba Gooding did have lines in the barbershop that were cut out. This was also Samuel L. Jackson's very first movie. This movie came out in 1988, Trading Places came out in 1983.
