We are not the problem, Lucy, we the product of society. The gate we face is greater than any ethnic group. Read the evil comments on here and ask yourself "Would they get away with calling all Muslims terrorist?" Never in a million years! Respect is not a one way street, all we have asked for is a level playing field, instead, we get the most vile, the most cruel, the most racist comments back imaginable. Then you all have the nerve to call yourselves " good citizens" and "Christian". Well, if being a good citizen means to have and be cruel, you can keep it. No wonder why many of us refuse to integrate, and rightly so.

I'll be honest. I used to treat them equally but they screwed me over too many times. When I worked in a store, they lied to me, stole from the store, took food off the shelves ate it in the store and littered the wrappers around the place without paying for any of it. The kids were loud and out of control. When I've encountered them elsewhere I've had cowboy builders screw me over with my driveway and then try to intimidate me when I left a bad review. I've had a kid try to rob me at knifepoint. They've dumped their crap on the streets. I've got them on camera stealing some parts from a bike in the local area. And theyve just generally been aggressive for no reason. Now that's not to say all have been that way. But I've only ever met a handful of people from that community that has ever earned my trust and respect. And I have met a hell of a lot of Irish travellers. As far as I'm concerned at this point, I look at all of them with severe distrust. I can't believe them. I know judging a book by its cover is wrong and I generally avoid doing it. But in this case lying, thievery and aggressive behaviour is their culture. I can't deal with them anymore.

@@cavemancult1999 You say it's a few individuals, but it's a LOT of individuals. It's extremely rare for me to find an example of a good Irish travellers. I've been held up at knifepoint by gypsie kids twice. I worked in retail for 3 years and there was only one Irish traveller lady that came in that didn't screw us over. But even then when she brought her kids in, carnage would follow. Wrappers left around the store, trollies full of items left around the place, half eaten and unpaid for food thrown around, the lot. Every other gypsie that came in had either stolen something or tried to steal something. I've been held up at knifepoint by gypsy kids once and my assistant manager got stabbed when he was confronting a shoplifter. The day afterwards a bunch of Irish travellers came over to cause trouble for us because the dude that stabbed our assistant manager got hurt. We had to lock them out and wait for police to turn up. My Dad had some people do his driveway up. Didn't realise they were gypsies or he never would've let them. But it was too late to regret how much of a shoddy job they did, he left a bad review for them and they turned up later in the week and started removing all of the slabs they placed until he gave them a good review! It's not a few individuals. Its the lot of them. Everywhere they go it just ends up bad. You say not to let a few bad apples ruin the batch, but from what I've seen heard and experienced the whole batch is ruined. If you don't believe me then go and experience it yourself. I sincerely dare you to walk into an Irish traveller camp. I hope you don't get hurt, but some things need to be seen first hand.

There are a number of issues that this documentary ignored , mainly it's the younger males in the community involved . Crime , specifically crime against the settled population , the settled population don't trust travelers and with very good reason , farms get robbed , dog theft is an everyday ocurance in Ireland ,it's not even safe to let your dog in the garden alone even for a few minutes, and it is mainly travelers taking people's pets . The roberys and ripping people off is now engrained in the traveler culture as normal . Other issues include animal cruelty for eg sulky racing horses down concrete roads which really hurts the horses legs and feet resulting in injurys horses left to live in quarys ( partly the government failing to take action ) where they regularly die of starvation , horses left to roam around housing estates in Dublin , left out in the heat with no water for hours on end IV seen and experianced these things first hand . Now whenever IV tried to discuss any issues of crime or animal welfare with the travelling community ,I immidiatly get called racist and they play the victim card . It would be a very different story for their community if they actually publicly acknowledged the serious problems that cause the breakdown in relations with the settled community's. IV never seen or known them to acknowledge any of it so I don't see how things would change if the community s won't see the problems and try to change . I do think it's been a huge disaster to try and force travelers to settle in one place , wrong on many levels ,things have just gone downhill from there . I do generally take people as I find them and I interact in respectfull way with all people , would I trust travelers ? The answer is no .I did that intialy, but ended up with financial loses as a result , it's safer not to engage with them in terms of getting to do jobs ect I wouldent take the chance of ending up out of pocket again. I would welcome more dialogue and engagement between the community's but only if all sides are willing to acknowledge their faults and the reasons why discrimination can be an issue.

@@daviepeterson5391 Maybe - but to be fair, I think what they are 'giving out' about is that they don't have access to those utilities, ie, the infrastructure isn't there. Certainly a shower/toilet block. Whereas a halting site will only have the most rudimentary provision, maybe a standpipe and one or two port - a - potties for maybe twenty or thirty caravans, and then people point their finger and crib that their kids are dirty. Even in the (Irish) countryside, there was a time when you could find a water pump or a standpipe in every lay~by and crossroads, but they have almost entirely fallen into disrepair or been torn out. I don't have rose tinted glasses about the Travellers - they (and I'm speaking generally here, of course) tend to be rowdy, and aggressive... When it comes to dress (the women in particular) and the decor of their homes, well, they simply don't 'do' _subtle..._ They are known for 'liking a drink' - and don't we all, but pubs dont find it necessary to refuse the rest of us service for fear of us recreating the bar - brawl scene in cliché Westerns... And for all their talk of prejudice and discrimination, they're not notable for their warm feelings towards immigrants, refugees, l8lacks, Asians, etc. (Don't even _ask_ about Gays!) But on the other hand it can't be too nice for a decent Traveller out getting 'the messages' (groceries - where they'll have probably been openly followed around by the security guard) needing a cup of coffee or a beer and a bit of a breather only to be confronted with a 'No Travellers' sign which were certainly still commonly seen in the UK when I lived there in the '90's and early Noughties. They are just like any minority group. Hungry for power, but demand it through welfare while complaining about discrimination for being a minority on welfare. If they choose this lifestyle by a cultural agreement, why should they get welfare? The Amish here in America are entirely self-sufficient and I have never met a single Amish family on welfare. They have known how to farm and live off the land for centuries. Why are they successful but these people are not? They blame outsiders while it's actually what they teach in their culture that is holding them back. The fact that the Amish have survived in America since coming over from Europe is proof enough the problem lies in the Traveler culture, much like the Romani people who refuse to go back to India where they their people are the majority and won't have any issues with practicing their culture.

And when they settled for unemployment benefits and settled in general I think they lost some form of spirit maybe I did too but little Ireland is an island, with somewhat stagnant mindsets due to our economy being paramount, controlled by multi national corporations, the tans leave and then we ally ourselves with someone else. They say the traveller peoples hit the roads when Cromwell came. I don't mean to romanticise the traveller way of life but there's so much more authenticity to it than being a slave to the government, with the boons that come with paying government's wages. Also just look at the travellers prison population in Castlerea jail in Co, Roscommon, Irelamd, but in doing so consider this, in Ireland just 0•7% of the population are travellers, but in that prison over 50% of inmates are travellers, female travellers make up 22% of the total female prison in the whole of Ireland, if that doesn't tell a story or explain people's attitudes to them nothing will!

I don't understand ,the Travelers are portrayed as living in poverty but that one man has 20 horses . Horses ,horse trailers and trucks to haul the are all expensive. Even on the cheap they are expensive. The narrator stated the horse was galloping, it was not those horses were pacing or racking. The story just doesn't go together well.
@Hotchpotch084 ай бұрын
I have had to report many of these horses left in horrific conditions - no fodder, polluted water, left in muddy squalor. The last time, a horse rescue was called by the Gardai and the horses were removed. Covered in scabs and disease. Two were so sick they had to be euthanised. This is what happens to many traveller horses. You can bet the poor breeding dogs are neglected and the taxman doesn’t see a penny from all of these cash sales. Yet the rest of us are expected to pay for everything.

Ray Coleman I'd a similar experience last summer. I don't know what I was thinking of by agreeing to hire three of them to clean the gutters of my three bedroomed, small bungalow because I never deal with Travellers either because of another bad experience with them years ago. They'd got hired that day by a couple of other neighbours and it never occured to me that anyone would do fake work, pretend work. One of the two sons of the family called to me while the others were power washing a nearby house and he seemed okay, I didn't realise at first that he was a Traveller. His father and brother arrived after that and it was obvious that they were Travellers. The father had powerwashed a square foot of my drive when I answered the door and a fleeting look of anger came on his face after I refused to hire them to powerwash the Drive and said that I only wanted the gutters cleaned. Eventually, he accepted that and agreed to clean only the gutters in exchange for50 Euro which his son, ( who'd called earlier had said they'd clean them for and said that they'd be hoovered clean). I thought that their Powerwasher must have some sort of vacuum in it and that it was a modern way of cleaning gutters. While they were blasting water at the front gutters I removed my garden shovel from the back wall of the house and put it against the fence. They'd backed their van in across the lawn without asking, an aggressive red haired brother of the first, knocked on the front door and rushed in past me in to the house uninvited while his father and brother were blasting water at the back gutters. He could have went round the side of the house like the rest of his family had done and it felt invasive and unsafe. They finished the back in five minutes like the front and then the father knocked at the back door and said that the drains were blocked and asked if I wanted them cleaned. I was puzzled and told them that the drain had just been working fine for the washing machine, he then said not that drain and I told him I only wanted the gutters done. A minute later, the red haired son knocked on the front door for the money, he again walked quickly in univited and followed me in to my bedroom when I was getting the money. I was deeply unhappy about this and managed to usher him out to the front door. Luckily just then one of my sons arrived back and I saw a look of dismay briefly cross the Travellers face as he went outside. He still demanded extra money though for a drain he insisted had been blocked and that they'd hoovered. Foolishly I gave him 20 Euro extra believing that he must have done this and that maybe people do this to maintain drains. 20 extra for doing nothing wasn't enough for them though, he stuck his foot in the door and aggresively demanded 40 more. He kept shouting that I owed them this money and trying to intimidate me. He looked at my nearby handbag containing my money and his body language showed that he was considering grabbing it and only barely managed not to. When his father came to the door I complained to him about his behaviour because I'd negotiated the agreed price with him, not with his aggressive son who was acting like a debt collector for a debt I didn't owe. He was unpleasant in his manner too but got his son away an drove off. After they'd gone I saw that they hadn't cleaned the gutters, which were still blocked and that they'd blasted vents out of the fascia and stolen my shovel. Dangerous people to deal with, never opening the door to them or any unsolicited callers again.

They value hard skills, such as house work or repairing a car, because at the end of the day, this is what they need within their community. And I can assure you that they have to help with the household and other tasks. I know it is hard to believe for us, because education is one of our biggest values. That being said, the majority of those kids were really polite and socially skilled. I’ve never met kids who were as attentive and helpful around the classroom.

If I didn't find an Appartment, pay my rent, get a job, I wouldn't have electricity, sanitary environment too, and my kids hat no school to go. There are jobs a man can do without any education, of course with small salary. If his young wife works too, they can handle their live and then get kids, instead of having kids at an age of twenty. At such a young age, nobody had any savings. It's okay, if they don't want to change their way of life, but then don't blame others.

Geneticists estimate this Irish community split from their native Irish communities a little more than 360 years ago. This could have been spurred on by the social upheaval that occurred following the Irish Rebellion in the 1600s with the severe backlash from Oliver Cromwell. As an Irish person you could fight for your ownership of land, willfully sign an indentureship with hopes of gaining land in North America or just pack up and start moving about the countryside and live a nomadic/merchant life. These folks bowed out of wars and industrialism. They have a direct line with the first industrialists - the wheel, horse and metallurgy people and they chose to never leave this early lifestyle. They are a reminder of our ancient past. The problem is that the British Isles is too small for them and their culture is not as protected and honored as some of the new immigrants whose radically different culture is beyond reproach. The subject of immigrants assimilating into British culture is completely off the table. Yet these folks should "know better" and get their act together. This inconsistency might hint of a subconscious bias relating to epidermis. We can't ask the folks from tent cultures to catch up with Northern European Industrialism but we can ask the people of the horse and wheel.

I think it must be very beneficial for kids to grow up around horses; it gives them companionship, but also responsibility; they’ll grow up with great work ethic and respect for nature. The other aspects of traveling life seem very hard for a child, though. Travelers clearly have a beautiful and vibrant culture and a history that deserves to be preserved and remembered, but it seems like it’s about time to start adapting the old ways a bit to give the kids more options in life. Teachers are helpless to give the kids a proper education if they only show up for a week or two every other month; as a kid I struggled to remember what I learned in school over the weekend, I can’t imagine how hard it would be to remember the last lesson if I hadn’t been in school in weeks.

In the US we don't give anyone a lifetime free ride, and the result is that everyone has to try to find a skill. After a while that skill turns into a better life. May not work everywhere but it works here. If a family wants to carry on the tradition of life outdoors and on the road, the family must figure out how this will pay for itself within the law, and if nobody's buying refurbished milk cans or buckets, time to figure out another gig. Freight trucking maybe, something that can support a family.
