I don't get people who say "just abuse your power" It's not HIS power. It's the power of the 'evil' witch. That meand he know nothing about it and can't control it. -what if it has limits? Spoilers for Arc 4 Also I am pretty sure that Authorities can exist in more than one person. Because the other witches are still able to use there Authorities even after they died and the Authority passed on to the Sin Archbishops.

For me it already is crazy that the story made him trigger this ability twice on purpose. (The cliff and when he stabbed himself) If it suddenly would be: "Oh, let's use RBD, I can't die anyway" it would mean that his character as a realistic human being would get completely lost

Re zero changed my life. I was also a shut in who went reluctantly to school always being lazy not doing anything. This show has inspired and showed me how life is too short. I watched this in 2016 when it first came out. And my life has changed because of this show. I was depressed all the time just watching anime and not going anywhere. Now i am about to end college and get my diploma and hopefuly work for a decent paycheck, i started playing football, going out with my friends. I am really grateful for the creator of this show.

Suburu's Return By Death isn't just a save function, it's an auto-save function. one that doesn't tell you when it auto-saves. It can be extremely helpful BUT at the same time it can auto save at any time, especially bad ones. it's like getting hit by an instant kill boss attack then learning that you got auto-saved right before you take the hit, so you're screwed.

It's like fighting an opponent in street fighter or king of fighters. You literally have "chip/1 health" which would die even if you blocked it. The enemy has TRIPLE HEALTH BARS and UNLIMITED TIME. All we can do is counter every single freaking move and beat him. That's what subaru would have to face if his respawn worked like that.

There's also the risk of one of Subaru's deaths overlapping with a savepoint. This can happen in some videogames. The game is saved (either by you or automatically) just before you get killed, which makes you respawn in the savepoint, just to get killed again. Depending on the situation, you can get stuck in this loop and have no option but to load a previous savepoint (if there is one).

The risk is there, for sure but in Season 2, it was found out that the Witch's "love" for Subaru isn't some weird obsession, it is something deeper than that as Satella herself stated that Subaru gave her everything, gave her light, hugged her, etc. So, if Satella is the one setting the Save-points than its nigh impossible for her to ever set a Save-point that traps Subaru in a constant death loop. The Witch only cares about Subaru's safety and that's probably the reason why the save-point was updated after Rem fell into the coma. Having read the novels, there hasn't been a single instance that this has happened (of course). Satella always sets the save point some time before Subaru's death. The closest a save-point has ever been to a Death point is 15 minutes.

It's indirectly brought up through discussions about differing views on healing magic as well. I always interpreted his successful path being the one in which both he and Emilia live. In the first and third arc, it was primarily Emilia's life in jeopardy, and in the second arc it was his own. The checkpoint seemed to update whenever both of their lives are secure. Now after watching this though, I'm wondering if I viewed it that way because those were exactly Subaru's goals in each arc. I've heard of the IF stories and I wonder if they contradict this theory.

I'd recommend reading the web novel alongside the anime if you wanna understand Subaru's character more than the web novel is the right way to go.

Imagine if shirou emiya from fate stay night had return by death and his struggle was trying to get the perfect golden ending where everyone is saved and happy while he abuses the hell out of it due to his martyr complex because he can never be happy unless he helps people regardless what happens to him like saber and kiritsugu and his future self archer chasing a impossible dream that is pure and selfless but at the end suffered no matter how hard they tried as a punishment.

You think gaining status is it? Who does he got the power from? My guess is that Envy either wants him alive or geting him into a position were she can actually meet him. Given we know that she is actually sealed away somewere. That also means he cant respawn into a dead end..... Rem being eaten indicates that its at least short term not about keeping other characters unharmed...

An interesting thing to note about Subaru's character is that there is a series of alternate timeline light novels by the author of Re:Zero, which take place in a non-canon version of events where Subaru gives in to a different sin or character flaw of his. Whereas in the anime (and thus the main timeline) Subaru makes the right and virtuous decisions. (Spoilers beyond this point for season 1 up to episode 18) For example, in the anime timeline, Subaru very nearly gives up on trying to save Emilia after failing twice, and he actually tries to convince Rem to leave the country with him and settle down, but he doesn't convince her, and then has the resolve to come up with a new plan to save Emilia, which is the point where he displays the virtue of diligence. Whereas in the alternate timeline of the Sloth If story, Subaru is more determined to take the easy way out, and he convinces Rem to run away with him, leaving Emilia and lots of other people to die, and he and Rem actually live a pretty happy life for a while (I don't know how it ends), but this is where Subaru displays the sin of Sloth and makes the wrong decision, so I doubt it ends well. Also for Rem fans that got this far and don't know about this story, Rem actually has Subaru's child, and I liked the story for that fanservice.

Something I've always thought about return by death is that. What if the respawns are picked for him as in like satela wants him to grow as a person so that's the reason Rem couldn't have been saved technically she's dead but she's also alive. So maybe that's what she wanted. Like she hates the other sin arch bishops but idk I'm an anime only and totally couldn't explain what I wanted to say.

The whole season 2 (24 episodes divided into part 1 & 2 with 12 episodes each) might only cover arc 4 of the LN, considering it's currently the longest running arc
