this book is simply a masterpiece. its infectious, touching, thrilling, exhaustively researched, detailed, epic and unmistakably cut with Robinson's own unique brand of humour - i loved every page…and totally believed its findings. wonderful!

I read it. This book is brilliant. Please don't be put off by the length. I relished every page, because Robinson has clearly found and demonstrated the truth, which is jaw-dropping.

The most fascinating and amazing thing about this book is that Robinson doesn't join any dots. It's the closest anyone has come to closing this case. Maybrick was the Ripper.

I'm about two thirds of the way through this now and it has a genuinely convincing narrative with the added benefit of being a proper page-turner. Not far in it starts to read like a thriller. Robinson has compiled a forensic study of not just the Ripper case itself but subsequent "Ripperology" lore and has great fun in dismantling both. That said it's far from a light-hearted piece of work. At it's core is a grave analysis of the dark and powerful forces at work within Victorian society all backed up with meticulous research and compelling documentation. I understand it took about 12 years to research and is about as far from a standard Jack The Ripper book as you can get. Once of the best non-fiction reads I've had in a long time. Highly recommended. Not looking forward to finishing it. My evening's will be empty without it.

Bruce Robinson is one of my all time favourite writers, The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman one of my favourite novels, so I was extremely excited about this new book from the genius author. I'm only a few chapters in, it's an epic read, but I'm already loving it. The guy is a master wordsmith. If you are fascinated by Jack the Ripper, or even if you're not, you should definitely check out this fantastic book.

Ironic that he claims that he has no interest in Ripperologists and dislikes them....but ponder this if you will. To 'be' a Ripperologist, one typically spends a good deal of time reading, thinking and sharing materials about the Case. Obviously, this means spending money on library fees, purchases, time spent on the research, etc......I cannot think of one Ripperologist who hasn't spent time, money, and self on the Case. Behold Bruce Robinson ! Not only does he mirror the average Ripperologist in terms of time and self spent on study.......but he claims he spent $ 500,000 ( thats five hundred thousand) dollars on his research. I nominate thee, Ripperologist Number 1 !!! Howard Brown, Ripperologist

+How Brown what a ridiculous thing to say…Robinson coins the term 'Ripperologist' as a negative slur to describe those with a vested interest in writing and rewriting THE SAME BOOK again and again and again to hide the truth….not just someone interested in solving the crime (or getting close) or being interested. AIso, is the Charlie Warren admission regarding his expert 'knowledge' on masonic ritual the only fault or discrepancy you could come up with from an 800 page book to prove Robinsons theory flawed? maybe you have failed to follow the narrative thread properly or indeed to grasp the 'bigger picture' (including his link to his brothers death and the trial of Florence) - as you well know these events occurred over 100 years ago and to piece this case together in the way he has, coming to the conclusion he does would have to be the wildest most fantastical piece of creative thought (and coincidence) ever undertaken. i am convinced he's spot on. Ive read it twice since november - you should too…and make some notes…cross reference and research the contradictions and grey areas - if indeed you feel there are any. and then post them here…

+david stokes For one thing, you didn;t understand the point I made. I thought I had made it clear enough. Robinson doesn't like Ripperologists....which is his prerogative. However, he immersed himself into the field for ( he says ) 15 years.....What the heck does that make him ? A casual reader of Ripper literature ? Of course, not David.....but he's your idol, so overlook that. I don;t need any advice on following narratives. Certainly not from someone who has bought into the lie that Robinson is passing around. Here;s one which should have been easy for you and that Jason Penn guy to poke a hole through. Do either of you believe that Michael Maybrick wrote every single letter signed, Jack The Ripper ? Robinson does and its seminal to his theory.

How Brown show me the evidence that suggests Robinson 'believes Maybrick wrote every letter'...Sir, my biggest problem with ANY and ALL of your arguments against Robinson and his claims is that YOU HAVENT EVEN READ THE TEXT YOU ARE DAMNING! you have completely misquoted (and even made up) suggestions that Robinson has said 'this or that' when i know (because I've read the book 3 times now to be certain I UNDERSTAND WHAT EXACTLY ROBINSON IS SAYING) that you are wrong sir...please please please, read his book and THEN make an argument otherwise you are simply continuing to HIDE behind Ripperology which exactly why Robinson hates the whole field so vehemently...PROVE him wrong don't just cover your eyes and ears which is whats been going in in your field for far too long.
