Yes and no. I work in staffing and recruiting as an Account Manager. We get requests from outsiders all the time, my recruiters get very annoyed when someone reaches out about a position but doesnt attach a resume. Recruiters are EXTREMELY busy so while building rapport is absolutely necessary, getting to the point right away is more valuable. The information in this video is excellent by the way.

This video got me to my final round interview for a software engineering position at Shutterstock. I'm getting so much value from your videos Jeff! This is extremely helpful! I've connected with some great recruiters. The one thing I will point out is that if you send a request you HAVE to put your message with the request. If you send an InMail, you cannot send a follow-up or thank you unless they accept and respond to that InMail message.

Thank you for this video. I have been looking for a new job for the past 3 years using the old-fashioned way of just sending my resume and have not had much success. I actually found my current job by reaching out someone on LinkedIn, but I used my membership in a specific ethnic association as a networking tool, which worked out. However, I know that this will not be effective with everyone since they may not be a member of a specific social/ethnic association. I am going to utilize your method going forward.

Props for breaking down the psychology behind the reason *why* we connect with a recruiter the specific way that we do. Huge believer that context is key, especially when you're dealing with real people. There's a reason the button says "connect" and not "beg for job now!". Thanks as always Jeff, and if there's anywhere online I can leave a positive testimonial that would benefit your current projects, drop the link in a reply or let me know where to go. Another tip--once you get the job, tell your recruiter to send people who are looking for the same kind of role that you just got your way. My recruiter is often sending people my way for help and advice on the job search. I don't want to call myself "the best candidate" or anything. But I did get the job, and other job-seekers want to replicate what I did well. I always make time to talk with job-seekers, especially those who are just trying to get into the industry. Breaking in was hard. I really want to help candidates who are putting in the effort. It isn't easy. Once you've gotten the job, pay it forward and help others!

Been trying this approach, but I seem to have more success when I'm upfront about wanting to apply for a position in the first message instead of digging through their profile and trying to find a common interest :/ I even interviewed a few recruiters and they say that they're not big fans of the approach where you first reach out without mentioning the job, they say it makes them unsure of your intentions (Are you looking for a job? Do you just want to be friends? Are you trying to hook up?) and they're more likely to ignore it instead of something where you are straightforward and upfront about applying for a job and what you want :/

If I should connect with someone who is already doing the same role, why would I contact recruiter to get me in touch, why not just contact that role directly on LinkedIn?
@JeffSu
@JeffSu 3 жыл бұрын
Because there would be a higher chance of successfully connecting with that person if the recruiter makes the connection 😉

@@JeffSu but the guy who’s already in same role, I’m not trying to gain anything but simple info on how he likes the job. Why take more steps to reach them, like they won’t hire me. If anything it should be contact the person at job to then get in touch with the recruiter.

Thank you so much Jeff for another wonderful video. I loved how you crafted the story for a better connection. But I have a question. Don’t you feel it will be overwhelming for a Recruiter to read such lengthy text when he/she recently connected with you on Linkedin?
@JeffSu
@JeffSu 3 жыл бұрын
You would need to have built rapport with the recruiter first! A little back and forth before this "longer" message wouldn't hurt!

Hi Jeff, great video and new sub. How would you adapt the messages in these steps if say you had already applied to the position? I'm conscious that sometimes some job postings are about to close and you need to apply before it's too late. How would you engage with recruiters in these cases? Thanks :)

Great video Jeff. I used the first tip and was able to connect with the recruiter 👍 but unfortunately the company has multiple recruiters and she was not the recruiter for the role and she did not know anyone on the team for that role. Would it be wise to still send her my resume for future reference or just let her know thanks for her time and keep in touch?
@JeffSu
@JeffSu 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Thomas! In your case it’s definitely worthwhile to keep in contact and perhaps even chat with this recruiter. You never know what the future holds and maybe this one would remember you and recommend you for future roles you’re interested in (or refer you to other recruiters!)

With enough background research, there will be something you two can talk about. Even a compliment on their previous posts or a comment about their career path would work!

Should I reach out to recruiters before applying for a job or after? Like online applications? Currently, I've been following your advice, but I'm seeing that a lot of recruiters don't accept but some do and a lot more employee's accept. I was thinking talking to employee's first and applying after online; after possibly getting their referral?

It's always best to network and have someone vouch for you before applying to the opening online! The chances of success when you do that skyrockets compared to blindly applying :)

Thanks for your guidance in navigating this perilous and scary jungle, with big looming animals around everywhere and if you make a mistake and step on a tiny twig at the wrong angle, someone turn around and will eat you alive. I really appreciate these scripts for guidance. While I'm socially intelligent and fairly extroverted in real life, I find the social choreography of these kinds of awkward social conversations with complete strangers utterly treacherous and can't overcome all of these unspoken rules that come with professionally talking to strangers on the internet. It's like it's own dedicated form of social anxiety, and it's a death trap. I simply can't act well enough to pretend it is the pinnacle of my life's purpose to work for a company that I never heard of til yesterday, and I don't know how so many people in the world just keep on keep on faking it and making it. I will be eaten soon, here in the dark.

It's great tutorial. Comprehensive and sticks to the point. It's just sad that job seekers should behave in uniform way to get the attention of the recruiters, which only points out that most of the recruiters are underqualified for the role. Ii know 5 or 6 software developers that need special treatment because some are not sociable some have anger issues some are just very lazy, but OMG their work is piece of art. They know what's in your mind without having to explain, they stick to the deadline and they do not have excuses. Some are very creative problem solvers too. But knowing them, none of them will do what's mentioned in the video. They will just stick it to the recruiter if they don't like them.
