Worth noting re: Ovechkin - He did pick up his scoring in the back half of the season (had he maintained his goal/game percentage from the first 4 months, he would've finished with 16 goals instead of 31; Had he maintained his goal/game percentage from the last 3 months? 50 goals). So as you inferred: It'll likely depend on how serious he was with his offseason workouts, now that he's back in DC for informal skates ahead of training camp...

McDavid is already only the 2nd player in the entire NHL history that has an adjusted points total over 1000 in their first 9 seasons. Jagr didn't do it, Lemieux didn't do it, neither Ovi, Crosby, Selanne, Bossy, or everyone else except for 1. Gretzky. And even still, Gretzky gets a massive penalty because he played in the high scoring 80s and still had 300 adjusted points more than McDavid at that point in his career. That is how good Gretzky was.

Wayne Gretzky played 1487 regular season games in 20 seasons in the NHL, but he scored his final goal, goal number 894, in game number 1477. Alex Ovechkin will have to score goal number 894 in game number 1476 or earlier, to say he did it quicker than Wayne Gretzky. Alex Ovechkin has played 1426 games. Subtract 1426 from game number 1477, in which Wayne Gretzky scored his last goal, goal number 894, and you get 51 games. Alex Ovechkin has 853 goals. 894 goals minus 853 goals equals 41 goals. Alex Ovechkin has to score 41 goals in 51 games to tie Wayne Gretzky, or score 41 goals in 50 games or less, to say he did it quicker than Wayne Gretzky did.

I think realistically speaking, for Ovi to beat the goal record next year, he's gonna have to score at least 20-25 goals this year, which trending wise may be a tough ask. He's gone down by about 10 goals per year for the last 3 years from 50 - 42 - 31, so if that trend continues and he only scores around 20 (or even less than 20), it might mean he won't have enough to reach it in his final year.

Joe Pavelski and Eric Staal have retired without reaching the 500th goal plateau, but we don't have to wait another 5 to 10 seasons for either Auston Matthews, or Connor McDavid, to become the 50th member of the NHL 500 goals club. We have a winner, it's John Tavares of the New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs! John Tavares will be the 50th member of the NHL 500 goals club, and it will most likely happen during the 2025-2026 NHL season. John Tavares has played 15 seasons in the NHL, with no signs of retiring before his 20th season. He has 456 goals, which makes him 44 goals shy of 500. His highest scoring season was 2018-2019 (47 goals), and his lowest scoring season was 2020-2021 (19 goals). John Tavares scoring all 44 goals during the 2024-2025 NHL season to reach 500 is highly unlikely, but you never know. In the last three seasons, John Tavares has scored 27, 36, and 29 goals. He has to average 22 goals per season for the next two seasons to reach 500, and become the 50th member of the NHL 500 goals club. Evgeni Malkin will become the 48th member (498 goals), and Patrick Kane will become the 49th member (471 goals), of the 500 goals club, during the 2024-2025 NHL season.

@@simoncohen9323 He is not an efficient shooter whatsoever. He's like Brett Hull, shoot as much as you can and hope like hell. They are happier taking the bad percentage shot than passing it to a teammate for a better percentage shot. As long as they are the one shooting the puck, they're happy. I think that if you can score 1 goal every 5 shots, you are a better scorer than someone who scores every 9 shots. Assuming both players are taking a good volume of shots, of course. Like when Stammer and Ovi each had 303 shots but Stamkos scored 22 more goals. Ovi has been in the top five in shots in 16 of his 19 years, leading the league in 11 of those years. Wayne was in the top five 6 times, leading the league in 4 of his 20 seasons. If Ovi would have just passed up the shot a little and settled for an assist, his team would have been much more successful, but team success wasn't his goal. To me, he is extremely selfish. The most goals Ovi ever led the league by was 13 and the most he ever led in shots by was 156. The most goals Wayne led by was 31 and the most he ever led in shots by was 33. Ovi just needs too many shots to be considered a great scorer for me. I consider Wayne a very good goal scorer, not a great one. Leon has three 50 goal seasons yet has never taken 280 shots in a season in his whole career. Ovi has taken less than 280 shots three times but never had more than 32 goals in those years.
