As a kid living on a council estate outside Manchester in the 80s , watching you and Lenny, it was not shocking it was great, felt totally natural to laugh until my belly hurt. My friend still owns a "Spit the dog" puppet.👍

Great interview. In tears at the closing exchange between Alexie and Tal. Reflects my own sense of despondency.

I saw Lenny in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui and he was fantastic. He also went round the audience in character before the play and greeted everyone, remarkably soft hands.

I don't think anybody is duty bound to like a comedian, but I do hate the dishonest way some people hate on Lenny. Just the other day I saw a Facebook post on a Doctor Who page recommending something Lenny was in as he had appeared on an episode of Doctor Who. There were a few comments saying 'thanks for telling us so now we know to avoid it', with a big grinned emoji next to it like they had just said something clever or edgy. Like I said, nobody is duty bound to appreciate a comedian, I don't particularly like Seinfeld but I know it's an incredibly popular show, but the gusto with which people will tell you they 'don't like Lenny' is very telling, especially on certain apps like Facebook, Twitter or on the comments page of a local newspaper. Like flies to sh*t they simply can't wait to tell you they hate him. For why? Well let's be honest, because they think being racist is clever and different. Of course they will insist they aren't, over and over again, but then when you ask why they don't like him, either all they can say is 'he's just not funny', or they'll make a vague comment along the lines of 'he's just annoying', or then they make it really obvious and say 'he's token, he only gets the job because he's Black'. They also make up things about him, one common phrase I hear is 'he hates white people', I also hear this levied constantly at other Black celebrities and even politicians, Dawn Butler and Diane Abbott get this all the time, so does Anthony Joshua because he said something about supporting Black owned businesses. It's just the go to for people who are too cowardly to admit they are just plain racist.

I love Lenny, he comes across as a really lovely and genuine bloke. I always loved that old Jamaican man that he played who pronounced England as "Hingland". I also loved Chef, especially since I was working in a hotel kitchen at the time it was on.

Dawn and Jennifer are no better than Bernard Manning, just coming in from different angles but equally useless

Manning was actually a very good comedian, I think your missing the point as to why hes despised! People would not be more sportive of Hitler if he was a better painter, being an awful human being tends to override that.

@@jamesneedham-t7u yeah cause telling racist jokes in the 60s-90s in british working mens clubs where it was the complete norm is an equivalence to starting a world war which killed up to 80 million people worldwide, including the attempt to wipe the Jews from Europe. Fucking clown.

Stephen Fry said Bernard Manning was one of the best deliverers of a joke. Don't think he agreed with all of Manning's material though.
