Anya Taylor-Joy said that it's not really about chess. She understood and played it to be about the cost of genius, so your comments about that were very much to the point. And it's true. If you don't know chess, you won't learn it from this series. But you may learn to appreciate it. The producers took great pains to get the chess right, so that those who do know and love the game wouldn't cringe. The knowledgeable and sharp-eyed spotted a few errors, but overall, it was an outstanding and superior production.

She has eidectic memory, or some people call it photographic memory. She's uninterested in everything else because she dialed it all in long ago. Her mother was an insane genius. She's a genius in a similar fashion. Mom was perhaps shizophrenic, Elizabeth is traumatized, shows signs of ADHD and has extreme abandonment issues which shouldn't be underestimated. Misdiagnosis and treatment could make things worse. She's not mentally ill per se, she's just had the life of pinata.

wonder if Beth might be on the spectrum?
@lewismaddox4132
@lewismaddox4132 Жыл бұрын
@@Bekka_Noyb It would be a real leap to handle the social aspects of Beth's world without therapy or medication, (and not self prescribed). Although with her mind we may be exploring new ground here. Perhaps the spectrum will evolve to encompass us all. After all, a world this unnatural takes a toll. If it doesn't make you crazy you must be crazy.

Photographic memory doesn’t exist, and eidetic memory has not been validated as a real thing. It also doesn’t work like “photographic memory” as people use that term.
@lewismaddox4132
@lewismaddox4132 8 ай бұрын
@@SnailHatan, whatever unreal thing she has it makes her memory startlingly sharp. Since you don't like unvalidated labels and because we know soooo much about the human mind that we can dismiss eidetic as a phenomena because it's unvalidated, let's just say she's really smart.

@thadcoons2968
@thadcoons2968 Жыл бұрын
Isla Johnston did an excellent job of portraying young Beth as a closed, taciturn child with a monotone voice and little facial expression who keeps her thoughts and passions mostly hidden. The contrast between her and Jolene, who is far more open and outspoken is striking. I thought it was a telling moment when Mrs. Deardorff casually burned her dress with her name embroidered on it, and never once asked her what she would like to be called. Her glance at Shaibel when Mr. Ganz gave her the doll and he nodded that she should accept it told how she really felt, and her smile as she said thank you was clearly fake. It was no surprise when she trashed the doll at the first opportunity. Then there was the faintest quirk of her lip as she was replaying the Scholars Mate on the ceiling that said "Got it!". and the determination as she was breaking into the pharmacy showed. I loved it.

Did Stella just reference Bo Burnham?? Instant points right then. I love chess, but I never really had the will to pursue obsession. I just played and did fair enough in competitions. The stories of the players who were pushed too far and cracked, of whom there were several examples, really resonated with my fears, for which I'm grateful for our coach because he really pushed having interests outside of the game. I do love that this show revived an in interest in chess, however romanticized it may be. I also deeply appreciate the trauma journey that this show portrays: it's no small thing.

This show is a couple of things to me, 1) the reason I fell in love with Chess, 2) the reason I fell in love with Anya Taylor-Joy, aside from Split and Glass (both amazing movies, which would be cool to watch your reactions to), and it's so special and so interesting to watch. There are a couple of actors in this show that I didn't even know were in it, the actor who played Dudley, Harry Melling, is in this and so is Thomas Brodie-Sangster who is most well known for The Maze Runner franchise and Nanny McPhee, which you will both meet later in the series, and this entire show is just amazing.

@@sexysadie2901 that's the thing, you don't HAVE to watch Unbreakable to watch Split because they are separate but with Glass, will it help them to understand the characters? I might be overstating it, and it might've been different at the time, but teaching the Sicilian to a beginner is generally a pretty awful idea. It's so complicated and has an unbelievable amount of intricate and difficult variations that newbies will always mess it up. I choose to take this as a sign that he suggested the Sicilian because she's not any old beginner, she has insane potential.
@soeintyp9393

I dont really like teaching openings in general. Just teach opening principles and why they lead to better positions, after that the common and popular openings happen naturally. Obviously at some point you need to study a lot of them, but in my experience people focus way too much on *memorizing* openings instead of actually learning to play and developing intuition, especially early on. **Understanding** a few universal openings is worth much more than **memorizing** a bunch of them, and also helps actually implementing the goals of openings into the gameplan.

The movie at the end is called "the Robe" about a roman soldier who witnessed the crucifixion of Christ and won Jesus' robe when he cast lots for it during the crucifixion. The soldier becomes a Christian after witnessing Jesus' resurrection and is persecuted and put to death by the Roman Emperor because believing in Christ contradicts Roman laws. The Romans saw it as Heresy and Blasphemy.

I’ve been in three chess tournaments in my life, and I’ve gone over some of the openings for white & black. Some are perilous, sabotaging, and belligerent on Black. Genius and madness definitely goes hand in hand. Especially it occurs a lot in mathematical and technical minds, since it is psychologically the furthest removed from the emotions of other people. Rationale isn't empathic. And without the ability to understand and communicate with people of such a different mindset, being able to stay sane in a world that sometimes lacks structure and reason can be... difficult to say the least.

Yes, this is a great series! Me and a couple of friends played. We were all self taught, but after we got serious about it - we started reading the books; openings, etc. After sometime one of my friends found out that you need massive points (+2500?) to become a 'Grand Champion.' It was like Geez! That would take almost a lifetime. We also went to one tournament and I noticed that most players played 'classically' - from what little knowledge I had at the time. The ability to look ahead in moves is the key; and strategy/positioning/control are next. About 50 years ago I used to be able to look 32 to 36 moves ahead. My buddy could look a bit further. But life happens and we stopped playing. I don't remember much of the Bobby Fisher Story - but I remembered that it was a good movie. This series however, was on a totally different level. She's easy to relate to and the entire rest of the 'sets,' costumes, acting - just blows everything else out. Along these lines I also love Prodigy movies! "Little Man Tate" - FRED!! LOL Latest is "Gifted" with Mary!!! Looking forward to seeing the others!

Hi, I caught your channel towards the end of the series ep7, hence I did not realise Stella taught kids. So with respect to Stella I will give a short background. Started in "G" grade club tournament chess, quickly proceeded to "A" grade and taught female and gifted kids. It is the quality of the training that will make the difference. Beth having been introduced to MCO, the current authority at that time on chess openings is the " go to" for club and tournament player (the computer is a long way off yet) . The Najdorf Sicilian is one of the trickiest of Black Defences and the most booked of Sicilian's of which there are many. The janitor was no slug. Anyone who will study over the board on his own is committed to long years of personal study bringing joy and disappointment.

So excited to see your reaction to this! Can you believe the ending to the episode?? (Lol) When I first saw it, I expected her to grab pills and stuff them in her pockets or something. I didn't expect her to start shoving fistfuls of them into her mouth! My jaw dropped and I was like, "HOLY SH**!" Certainly caught my attention and made me want to keep watching to find out what happens next. I love that Stella recognizes some of the chess moves and points them out too - I've never played chess so I don't know what I'm looking at as the characters are playing. So it's cool to get her reaction to this! Regardless of my lack of chess knowledge, it's really fun to watch, especially when you can see Beth playing the moves all in her head, or when she's playing the entire classroom all at once.

i’m so happy you’re doing this!! it’s truly one of my favourite series ever, if not my favourite. i read the book and everything is translated really well to the show, in my opinion. both are very similar and both are stunning, the only difference is that there was a little more failure for beth in the book, more trials and tribulations.

37:30 Ah yeah brings back memories. The first computer game I ever bought as a kid with my pocket money from the very limited CD rack in our local grocery store was the original 1991 Fritz Chess. I spent so many hours on it not just playing but exploring the included database of patterns and historic games, etc.

The high school kids looking mad. Makes sense. It was a lose-lose proposition for them. Either lose to a 9yo or win against a 9yo. Either way is bad for them.

Probably the best chess film since Searching for Bobby Fisher. Like Bobby Fisher, based on a true story. Unlike Fisher, this takes beyond childhood. Like the best sports films, it transcends the game itself.

I got the impression her mother may have had some mental illness problems and that may have been a University friend looking for her, worried about her well being. Intelligent parents, high IQ, photographic memory enhance by sedatives. Trauma in her life helps her go inward making her concentrate on one thing easier, the Brendan Fraser movie "The Scout" explains that perfectly. I do believe the projection movie is "The Robe."
