the problem with the looks of most European countries is that they dont even try to incorporate their historical or mythological fashion. France could have done crazy hair with a roccoco dress, russia could have gone all out on traditional dress (they did some of it, but not as puffy and not enough detail in the embroidery), ireland went for st.patricks day, but they could have made it bigger and sparklier, there were definitely ways to make their concept look better. over all the southern hemisphere countries carried this contest

I would have _loved_ to have seen Russia to a take on say, the Queen of Copper Mountain. I remember a sculpture a woman made of her some years back, with a traditional headpiece that was so much more detailed in it's tinier scale than the woman was wearing, and and a simple cut gown... in a flowing malachite pattern. Do something like that, have the hint of a dragon tail (if I'm remember the story right), and they might come close to actually being in the competition.

Absolutely! Irish mythology is really cool in my opinion and I definitely think they could've done much better, though probably just settled on St Patrick because it's honestly what we're most recognised for internationally. Could also be something to with it (the model/outfit) being from the North rather than the Republic. Long messy history up there especially 👁️👄👁️

Definitely a budget thing. I know a Miss Canada from years ago had to purchase her own plane tickets to the finals and sort out her own makeup / costumes and all logistics, and I imagine this is the case for the majority of the countries with the embarrassingly basic outfits. If the contestants do not come from money, there's not much they can do even if they are representing their country to the world. There is no team and no given budget. Luckily other countries put in more effort and funding for this type of thing.

I guess not just only about budget issues but creativity. For your information. I am from Malaysia. One of South East Asia countries. My country do not have huge fan base in pagentry contests. We kinda follow or see this pagent on tv but not avid fan like Philiphine, Indonesia or Thais. So our pagentry team do not have big huge sponsorship meaning no huge budget. After many years participating pagentry, I guess this time our national costume designer did this right. Many of South East Asia countries costumes you see are truly national costume that is still wore by people today, in festivities, marriage and other ceremony.

Ireland came dressed in a poison ivy cosplay when they have an abundant amount of Celtic history to reference, France easily could have done Rococo, Russia was on the right track but definitely could have done something big inspired by the Czar's fashion, Germany didn't even manage to put their model in Letterhosen or give her a beer keg to fit the stereotype. If England showed up we easily could have seen Tudor, Elizabethian, or victorian styles which would be big enough to compete with Italy never mid the well of medieval dresses.

21:24 For Filipino who's asking what Ms. Philippines wanted to represent in her butterfly costume: it's the Paruparo Festival (Butterfly Festival). It doesn't seem a cultural thing because IT'S PRETTY RECENT! But it shouldn't also be dismissed! Paruparo Festival was launched in November 26, 2011. It features the metamorphosis of Dasmariñas (Samantha's hometown) from being barrio to becoming one of the most fast developing cities in the countries. Because it's pretty recent (November 26, 2011) Butterfly represent metamorphosis. In this case: it represent the development of the city thanks to unity, determination and unhesitating willingness to embrace changes. I also love how the wings embraces the light, “like a butterfly embracing the sun with their wings wide open”. Although it doesn't seem a grand thing for others, Ms. Philippines really took it by heart and that's admirable.

Make a dress that looks like it's made out of thousands of maple leaves that you carefully collected from the forest floor and then lovingly organized to create gentle patterns within the gradations of red. Want to include the white? Add a layer of what looks like frost to the hem and the cuffs along with some really elegant shoes that look like they're also covered in frost. The worst thing about so many of these costumes is the clear attitude of some designers: who cares about the costume as long as you can see her legs (looking at you, Germany, Ireland, Australia etc. - this could've been so much less tacky!). I mean if it's clearly a part of design, like with so many of the amazing South American and African countries, then great, but in so many costumes you can tell that was their main concern: HAVE TO SEE THEM PINS! Italy really stood out positively. I love your reactions here!

Germany had exactly one good thought and that was "fairytale". Then they went with little red riding hood from the dollar store. Imagine if they had done Rapunzel instead, with an enormous wig that's like 10 feet of hair. Or a Rumpelstilzchen inspired thing with a spinning wheel that's just spilling golden thread the entire time. Literally any other fairytale or at least a higher budget costume could have been great.

Red Riding Hood could have worked with proper mediaval dress, tbh. Add a wow factor by having a wolf in there somehow. (My brain is conyuring a contraption hidden under a heavy red cloak that makes a puppet come out from under it) But Rumpelstilzkin would have been lovely, too. Like straw flowing off of her dress into a spindle and turning into gold thread that makes up the rest of her costume, which can easily be inspired by some traditional royal dresses

The saddest thing about the European nations is that they all have rich fashion throughout history. For example both northern and Eastern Europe have a rich folk history that could’ve been used greatly to their advantage. France could’ve used their 17th century ball gowns like how Italy used their Venecian Masquerade. I feel like Germany’s could have been salvaged because the Brothers Grimm were both influential to German folklore, but the cheap costume just ruined it.

The costume from Malaysia is based on a traditional dance called Ulek Mayang from the state of Terrenganu. The dance is based on a ritual by a bomoh (shaman) to treat a fisherman who was spellbound by a sea princess who fell in love with him. According to the legend, the princess called five other sisters to fight the bomoh for the fisherman’s soul until the fight was resolved by the seventh princess who ordered everyone to return to their place of origin, the fisherman stays on land & the princesses return to the sea. The mannequins were based on the 7 sea princesses and Lishalliny (the contestant) dressed as the bomoh hence the traditional malay male attire and the rice paddy she was holding and swinging was used in the ritual. The dance is one of many dying arts in the country so I'm glad to see it being preserved in the costume.

The Sweeden dress was inspired by Sankta Lucia. She’s an important saint to both Finish and Swedish people. We don’t technically have saints, but make and exeption for her. She was a girl who brought warmth with candles and a bunch of food to strugling people. And since our countries are really cold the warmt was really important. She is usually displayed with a crown of candles and holding a candle. We have a celebration where a bunch of girls dress in white and carry candles in a procesion of sorts. Even I have done this. Wasn’t Lucia tho.

I grew up in a Dutch-American town that celebrated its Dutch-ness every spring with a Tulip festival. Traditional costumes from every region of the Netherlands abound that whole week. For one week, everyone is "Dutch," no matter their actual ethnicity or where. You could do *incredible* things with ANY of those traditional styles, and that's not even considering the "iconic imagery" of the country. I'm not even Dutch but growing up in a place that unironically celebrates and dances in real wooden shoes every spring makes me offended that Miss Grand Netherlands wore a cheap racing track suit. ARGH! Why go for some random race car jumpsuit? You could have represented your culture beautifully with some innovative changes to ethnic Netherland clothing! And Miss Canada and America. Why. Should have just let some first nations step in and take over because these were incredibly bland, ugly, lowkey unoriginal, and boring. Like, either that or at least go for some high end clothing these countries had in the past. The high end clothing/ first nations cultural clothing is just so much fun to look at.

I know a lot of people are mentioning budget as a big limiting factor for many European countries. I also know that, for Germany at least, traditional costumes, or "Tracht", can be tricky because of the many different German subcultures and identities. Even the most famously stereotpyical "German" look of the dirndl/lederhosen is a very Bavarian-Austrian thing. All my friends from Freiburg am Breisgau or Kiel wouldn't be caught dead in them. If you're interested in some of Germany's more interesting cultural outfits I'd recommend checking out the "Bollenhut" from the Black Forest, the "Sudetentracht" from the historical Sudetenland region, or Alsatian Tracht (Elsäßer Tracht) from Alsace, the German-speaking part of France. There are also some cool styles unique to the Sorbian minority in North-East Germany.

Just to let u know that the Malaysia outfit is based on folkfore "Ulek Mayang". Ulek Mayang is story about sea spirit or bunian (elf? ) and consists of 7 princess (7 mannequin). One day, the fishermen go to catch their fish at the sea but a huge wave hitting them and they stranded on seashore. All the fishermen is concious except one. They bring the unconcious fisherman to a dukun (shaman) and he said that the unconcious fisherman soul was kidnapped by one of the princess because she interesed in him. So the dukun do a ritual to get back the soul and he fight so intensely that the princess have to get help from another 5 sisters. Then the first princess appeared which is the most beautiful, wise and strong among them. When the dukun realise the first princess appear he try to negotiate with her. The first princess keep listen because she know how problematic her sisters is. Then the princess say "I know ur origin, let creatures coming from land back to land, and let creature coming from sea back to sea". So everything back to normal and the dukun keep give offering to the 7 princess because of that event. The model in the video dress as the dukun. There is a song about this folkfore and the song have lyric about first until seven princess. But we never sing a full version because some mystical (possession and paranormal) thing happen if we do. So most people perform with even number (2,4,6) princess verse only in the song. Sorry if there is a mistake

I guess they just wanted to go for something more generic and relatable to everyone in Russia, instead of choosing to represent some one specific ethnicity you know (especially since Russia is NOT known for treating their ethnic minorities well, there's a long history of trying to assimilate them all into "just being Russian", as a result of which many minority languages are on the brink of extinction)

Glad to know you like the Brazilian one! Boitatá is one of my favorite legends told by the indigenous people. I can't remember it properly because it's been years since I read about it, but I do remember that there was a flood that killed many animals, then Boitatá ate the eyes of the dead animals (because it was dark and the eyes were shining or something like that) and Boitatá itself started to shine! Also, Boitatá is not the only guardian of the florest! While Boitatá hurts people who try to burn the florest, there's also Curupira who scare hunters so they don't hurt the animals, and if I'm not mistaken, Saci Pererê is the guardian of medicinal herbs (but he's known for being a trickster, tho)

MALAYSIA REPRESENT 🇲🇾 proud to say that there’s a LOT of cultural inspo in her fit, which i will attempt to explain (based on personal experience and not any academic background whatsoever). the outfit itself is based on a folktale from terengganu known as ‘ulek mayang’. it follows the story of a fisherman who has his soul stolen by a sea princess. a witch doctor, known as a ‘bomoh’ is then comissioned to recover his soul, and confronts the sea princess and her sisters. the seven puppets represent the seven princesses, and the model herself represents the witch doctor. as far as i know, the outfit itself is a stylised ‘baju melayu’, something typically worn by men. her headdress is known as a ‘tangkak’, which traces its inspirational origins to the crown on top of a rooster’s head (cock fighting was very big in malay culture, and probably still is in more rural areas). around her waist is what i think is a ‘sampin’, a very very beautiful piece of cloth worn on important occassions like weddings and festivals like hari raya aidilfitri. there are probably more that i have missed, so if anyone knows anything more, please feel free to add!!

@@wonderlucky1912 If you want the traditional clothing, go to the Oktoberfest. it hasnt changed much. just imagine it more Modest. Germany doesn't have that much of a Tradition left. the wars, the romans, whatever fuckfest the mideval Times was where there were the HRE and the bakx and forth. and Cathlics back then. they fucked the pagansy that would have left traditions. at least Yule is somewhat there (they call it Christmas now, but that is in fact a crime if we look at their own fucking book, don't take others holidays as your own.) I has so much ANGER for a history I never get to learn because it never existed.

It could've been a nod to indigenous Canadians and brought much needed representation and wearing something that represents ALL of Canada, but nope, it's just an 'exotic' flag. It would have been controversial for a white person to admit to wearing something inspired by indigenous cultures, but I think that would have been way better. It would have come across a bit more appreciative and inclusive, but instead, it's just appropriative.

As an Australian, if she has no Indigenous Australians heritage, then wearing the butterfly costume was definitely the respectful choice. Interestingly, we do have a massive butterfly migration along the eastern central coast line of Queensland. For a good one to two months, the air is filled with butterflies making their way out to the ocean. My towns local Gurang Gurang mob have stories from The Dreaming about the migrations, so its been around a long time. Potentially, the butterfly costume could have been inspired by their migration? Australia is not just field with deadly things. =D

My favorites are Angola, Malaysia, and Italy. Italy was based on the Carneval in Venice. I'm not sure the spelling but it's similar to the Carnival in Rio or Mardi Gras in New Orleans - one last hurrah before the 40 days of Lent. I saw some of the masks they wear when I visited Venice and they were absolutely stunning.
