I was an OS staring at those ACDS consoles that were shown. We worked closely with BM's, QM's, FC's, an We'd. The spaces could get cold and were always dark. You're right about us being pale. We also had jackets even in the gulf and the flight deck Personel would stare at us funny in the galley because of it.

Hey JT first off i was a helms men so you do get a lot of course changes especially in war games or when they're trying to get an officer qualified as conning officer. I'm also a Boatswains mate for life and there's noting sweeter then the sound of a bosun pipe to me. Also cruisers and destroyers are not the same, cruisers are bigger, better and have more fire power. And finally the last scene is sailing up to Naval station Yorktown, the last time i was there was in 2015 getting armed up for deployment and our captain at the time did some stuff at the bar and destroyed his career.

Had that in Perth. Still got Clubs on Base? We had Country, Rock ,Rap. Could drink at 18. Anyone remember Treasure Island? Sutro's? Thailand where you fished in a kidie pool with magnetic bait to get a plastic eggs with a number that matched a girl in a bikini? Singapore where only beer bottles were tall boys? Subic,PI? I still got a hangover, 35 years later....

@ultragrimx89936 жыл бұрын
@JTsuits As a former OS2 let me help you out. CIC or CDC (Combat Infromation Center/Combat Direction Center) This is where the real action happens. It looks boring in the video cause nothing is happening but normal operations. On the Bridge their will be BM(Boats) QM(Wheels) OS(sometimes called JL).
@ultragrimx89936 жыл бұрын
Oh also OOD (Officer of the Deck), Jood (Junior officer of the Deck) Jow (Junior Officer of the Watch). These guys switch off on who has the CON. That person is called the Conning Officer in which he gives the directions and speed changes to Boats and they have to repeat it back.
@ultragrimx89936 жыл бұрын
Well lol OS's career depends on where you are face stationed. Its a interesting rate with alot to learn. We Operate Radar Consoles, Help with ships navigation by using charts and Moboards. We also assist pilots in air control via Helo and Jet. Plus the rate is pretty easy to advance in right now. But draw back being long watch times, sometimes boring times like you saw in the video and a shit ton to read and learn.But the knowledge keeps it less boring in a way. I loved being a OS, but only cause it was right for me.
@ultragrimx89936 жыл бұрын
6-8 hours is the min but if your port and stbd which you'll learn what that is in due time can exceed those hours. Also if your doing certain transit operations your watch time can extend. It all depends on what type of command you go to. Large deck ships such as Carriers or LHD, LPD's have alot of crew members so your not short of watch members. But Small boys Destroyers or Cruisiers have less people which means longer watch times, also more work. OS/QM is are pretty close knit rates. Not as in what we do but OS's assist in navigation in which we work with the QM's via chart corretions. If your trying to find a chill job the navy is not for you lol. Even off watch theirs things that you have to do for the Department. Painting, cleaning, daily Maintenance that has to be done. Some jobs are easier than others based on work conditions and promotion percentages. OS's work in air conditioned spaces and rarely get dirty same goes for QM.
@ultragrimx89936 жыл бұрын
A school is very easy for OS's, unless you just dont care and dont stay focused on learning. Every test you take in the Navy is multiple choice, even advancement exam's. OS is a very easy job as long as your dedicated to learn. Stay focused and Head on a Swivel.
@ultragrimx89936 жыл бұрын
It all depends like i said before on your command. When i first came in yes inport we left really early. As long as the daily task got done and your not on duty we got to leave way earlier the majority of the rates. But ill say it again it all depends on your command. Theirs are good commands and shitty ones too. Ive been through some good commands but alot of shitty commands too. Just understand that the military is not your average job, once you sign that paper work they own you in a way of words. Dont rely on your Recruiter to give you valid info either cause they also have a job and thats to get numbers. I enjoyed being in the navy 80% of my time, but understand every job has pros and cons.

Lobster dinner before any bad news starts. Anyway my rate was an OS. Yeah that’s the bridge. Spend over 8 years on FFG, CG, and DDG. Yeah most of the OSs and QMs are on the bridge for NAV and sea and anchor detail. Steer coursing is the heading that they that the boat is trying to go, but checking course is the boat’s current course due to the wave and sea state. NAV and CIC will kept on making recommendations to the OOD and conn. Boats usually reads the schedule and blow the whistles according to the POD. Now if the ship is going silent or after sundown (observe sunset) the boat will go into darken the ship and each department will make a report to the bridge. Good times.
